Lip-syncing is moving the lips in synchronization with [pre-] recorded speech or

songto give the appearance of a live performance. It can be used to make an

impression as though actors have musical ability or to misattribute vocals, to enable

them to perform live dance numbers, or to cover for illness or other deficiencies

during live performance. The practice of lip-syncing during live performances is

frowned on by some who view it as a crutch only used by lesser talents.

How about giving lip-syncing a cooler angle instead? How about using it to kick

some ass, bring some smiles and have a whole lot of fun? Let us adopt a new

definition, Lip-syncing is lip movement with style, wherein a recorded version of asuper catchy song is played and a self-described artist moves his mouth to the

words being sung, with endless oomph and boundless X-factor, simultaneously

    dancing in a choreographed fashion.

Well, the lip-exercise has sure caught on like wildfire and the act is now a trend to

watch out for. YouTube is going berserk with viral lip-sync videos, so are schools

and colleges around the world, with crazy lip-syncing competitions and contests,

    happening by the minute.

The trend is so infectious, that even cats and dogs have enthusiastically joined the

cradle. Okay fine, now we are going overboard. But then we did manage to find

    some pictures :p

To top all the ongoing madness, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon has acted as an icing

on the cake. Jimmy Fallon, the comedian, invites celebrities from far and wide for a

lip-sync off. The rules are simple. Each celebrity has to sing; rather perform three

songs, and whoever faux-croons the best, wins. Ha! Quite a concept I tell you. The

insanity is so widespread that a new iPhone application called Mouth-Off has now

been developed for all lip-sync lovers.

Check out this link and experience the bizarre pool of mad trending:

Post this, I am sure you would want to try it too. Sometimes, making a fool of

yourself is so worth it, isnt it?

Though going by history, it seems like lip-syncing has been up and about since

pretty much, forever. Milli Vanilli did it. Ashlee Simpson did it. Possibly, even Britney

    Spears did it.

Backed by the Forbes research, I have for you some interesting lip-syncing gossip

    from the archives.

In one of the most famous lip-syncing scandals ever, Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan better

known as Milli Vanilli, were outed as lip -syncers during a 1990 concert when their pre-

recorded track started skipping. When it was revealed they didnt even sing on their studio

albums, they returned their Grammys and quickly fell from grace. Their names are now

    synonymous with faking it.

Ashlee Simpson was outed during a 2004 Saturday Night Live performance when her

backing track played a song different from the one she was singing. She tried to play it off by

awkwardly dancing around the stage, but was the laughing stock of the entertainment world

    for a few days.

At the 2007 BET awards, 50 Cent stumbled through his performance, missing cues and then

being thrown for a loop when his music started looping instead of playing the vocals.

In 1983, Michael Jackson lip synced his way through Billi Jean during a Motown

anniversary special on television. His performance of the song was still so great, no one

seemed to care he wasnt really singing.

In an August 2003 show at Madison Square Garden, R. Kelly put down his mic during a

song and let the pre-recorded track go on singing, on purpose. The audience supposedly

    responded positively.

At Super Bowl XLIII, Jennifer Hudson lip-synced the National Anthem because the producer

said there were too many variables to do the song live.

During a partially lip-synced performance on Good Morning America, Mariah Carey actually

sang the words Stop singing my part, baby to a backup singer.

Britney Spears, a repeat offender of lip-syncing crime, made her fake vocals so obvious

during an Australian concert that her fans walked out.

Not only did Luciano Pavarotti lip sync Nessun Dorma during the opening ceremony of the

2006 Winter Olympics, but the orchestra and conductor faked it as well.

The stories are endless, but finally the rules of the game have changed. For people now, it is all

about indulging in a new activity, having a good time and faking their guts out.

The YouTube lip-dub diaries have a whole lot of proof to substantiate the rise of the lip-syncingtrend.

Some recent stories include that of a 15-year-old Keenan Cahill. Last September, he posted

a dubbed version of Katy Perrys Teenage Dream that became the Most Shared video of

2010. Since that clip first became popular, his videos have been viewed one-quarter of a

billion times. Perry even made a video wishing him a happy birthday. Some major celebrities

have now started appearing in his lip-dub videos and he recently collaborated with

DJ/Producer David Guetta. That is quite a cake for a dub-artist.

Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake originally started in show business on the Disney

Channel. In their vintage video from 1994, Britney, Justin, and the gang sing (or lip

sync) IllTake You There on Disney. Now, the 90s clip is trending more than ever.

In a video from last summer, a young brother and sisterduo, sing along with KornsFalling

Away From Me from their children car seats at the back. The performance is spell-binding.

Heyman, she couldnt sing so she had a right to lip sync! It says so in the rules.

So, now as we know how the trend has picked on so well, why not indulge? Want to know the rules,

kick back and enjoy? Here, we go:

Find a popular song with lots of lyrics in it- you obviously dont want to go in for a lot of

instrumental bits and parts, after all it is all about that act of yours.

Learn the song- you have to fake the singing, so you better look cool doing it. We have to

fake it in style, you see.

Watch how people talk- learn the art of observation, my dear. Pick up accent styles and

word formation techniques. It will so pay off when you pull that performance of yours.

Dress up, look fabulous and get ready to perform with aplomb; shoot a video or go

livelooking great is always the key. Half the brownie points are achieved with looks that

can kill. As for the rest of it, loosen that body, shake the thinking meter and go bananas. It is

time to jiggy-jig with some blubber-blabber.

FIX THE MUSIC AND THE MOOD

Awesome music with well-rehearsed lyrics is super-super important. So, stretch your

legs, shake your booty, do a shimmy and take over your area with a bang.

    MIC TESTING, HELLO HELLO!

Of course you dont need a mic to go all vocal, but its all about the image, isnt it?

You have to look like a singing sensation and get ready with all the gear. So grab

that mic, get some intensity to the situation, get all emotions to your face and a

whizzing energy to your body; you are now ready to roll.

NOW THAT YOU LOOK GREAT, MAKE SURE YOU TAPE SOME PROOF

We know you have made all the effort to dress up, learnt your lines and practiced

badass moves. So, you better gather and record proof as well. Who knows, you

might just become the next faux-nightingale? If not that, you might just pass off for

an incredibly talented actor. When you know you have bucketfuls of potential, isnt it

    best to be prepared always?

Well, I am totally digging this new stuff and trust me, once you get the hang of it, you

will simply get addicted to the lunacy and spread it with gusto.

Let us all join hands and faux sing (in a jumpy, shake-shake tone):

Move your lips, make a pout.

    Sway your hips, prance about.

Join the lip-sync trend-wagon else you are out, out, out.

    Say out, out, out!
