UFCCUltrafiltration Compatibility Coefficient (UFCC) evaluation is a series of tests that compare UF performance against a multitude of paint conditions. In the first phase, acid concentration (meq/L) is measured and it is determined if further testing is required. In many cases, simply adjusting the acid concentration can provide significant improvements to UF flux stability. In the second phase, bath paint is compared to fresh paint and a UFCC number is determined on a scale of 0 – 1. The higher the UFCC number, the better the UF performance. Eg. Lower frequency of cleaning, greater permeate output overtime, and possibly longer membrane life. If a UFCC number is considered too low for economical operation of UF elements, adjustments will be made to the bath paint’s acid concentration until an acceptable UFCC number is reached. If acid adjustment alone can not improve UFCC sufficiently, a third phase of testing can be done. The third phase involves testing of other contaminants such as bacteria, phosphate, and pre-treatment cleaners. Once the problem is determined, further testing is done to identify possible solutions. In the end, a recommendation is made based on all gathered data and this recommendation is shared with both the paint maker and end user. All UFCC tests require good communication between the paint maker, end user, and Synder Filtration. Detailed record keeping of tank history, operating conditions, and UF performance are absolutely essential to the UFCC process.

UFCC CLEANING FREQUENCY

0.95 and up Generally no cleaning is required

The Anocel-TCF (center feed) is a robust and energy saving anode offering a revolutionary cap design. The cap design allows the anode to rotate without disassembly, to ensure even wear and longer life. Anocel-TCF also features a clean anolyte feed down through the center of the anode that prevents clogging and improves flow through the entire anolyte cell. A welded membrane design and heavy-duty protective mesh cover adds durability. The Parker flushable Anocel –TCF maintains optimum pH by extracting acid from the paint bath as it serves as a counter electrode with the least electrical resistance. The Anocel-TCF, with its robust and more efficient cap design and the ion-selective membrane, are available in 1.5” and 2” diameter and standard lengths to provide maximum flexibility for part size and tank depth. BENEFITS

Membrane construction

The resin-based ion-selective membrane has been chosen to provide the lowest electrical resistance. Parker Hannifin Corporation’s proprietary welded tubular construction creates a self-supporting structure that eliminates membrane distortion. Placing the membrane between these frames (and not wrapping the membrane around the inner frame), reduces resistance and blockage of the electrical paths. The benefits of this are even wear and longer life for the electrode and more economic cell operation. Other cells available on the market use the inner frame to wrap or roll the dry membrane in a circular or tubular shape. Another layer of material is wrapped around the dry membrane to keep it from swelling when it becomes wet. These additional support layers for the ions to pass through increase the resistivity of the cell, thereby increasing electrical costs. Additionally, this method of fabrication distorts the expanded membrane into the holes of the inner and outer frame. This distortion causes uneven electrolyte circulation and the creation of hot spots of higher conductivity in the electrolyte solution. These hot spots concentrate the current draw of the device into an uneven pattern and erode the electrode at an accelerated rate. The result is shorter electrode life and higher maintenance costs.

Optional configurations Submersible floor and overhead electrodes (see notes) Bare electrodes RuO and Iridium Notes: Tubular overhead cells: same features as the side cell

version; is available in custom sizes for any application. All units are supplied complete with mounting hardware and instructions.

Tubular floor cells: same features as the overhead

cells except these units are completely submersible. Available in custom sizes and formats to fit any application. Available in both bare and membrane style and include appropriate mounting hardware.

Page 37: LIQUID PROCESS FILTRATION - REVERSE OSMOSIS MEMBRANES

LIQUID PROCESS FILTRATION - ANODIC AND CATHODIC CELLSSynder - Anode Cell

TECHCELL TUBULAR ANODE CELLS Tubular anodes provide better painting coverage than flat cells. With more throw angles, tubular anodes

can reach more surfaces on the part and paint parts for a longer time frame in monorail systems. The anionic membrane area is greater than the anode area, reducing electrical resistance

and therefore, lowering operational cost. Synder’s anoylte delivery system supplies maximum flushing of the anode to remove corrosive oxygen, extending anode life.

Synder’s unique membrane inner-support offers greater annular space for anolyte to flow. This helps to keep the membrane clean, minimizing the build-up of electrical resistance.

TechCELL’s can be removed by a single operator, creating greater ease of use and reducing maintenance costs.

Custom designs to meet different tank and part criteria and configuration. Mounting hardware, Anderson power pole electrical quick connectors and 5’

anolyte tubing supplied with each cell. PAINT MORE & SAVE ENERGY Anolyte Solution is forced out of the bottom of the anode pipe, facilitating rapid oxygen removal along the entire anode length. Better oxygen removal = Less corrosion of the anode.

CROSS SECTION OF MEMBRANE SHELL Annular space between membrane and inner support greatly improves rinsing of membrane to reduce foulants, such as iron oxide. This in turn minimizes build up of electrical resistance on the membrane.

BETTER THROW ANGLES

Tubular (Round) Anodes offer a greater range of electrical “throw angles” vs. flat cells. A greater variety of throw angles can significantly improve the coating quality and coverage in hard to reach areas of the part. More throw angles also allow the anode to start painting sooner in monorail systems.

MODULAR SUPERCELL ‘‘C’’ SHAPED ANODE CELLS SuperCELL’s also provide better painting coverage than flat cells. with more throw angles, SuperCELL anodes can reach

more surfaces on the part and paint parts for a longer time frame in monorail systems. The anionic membrane area is greater than the anode area, reducing electrical resistance and therefore, lowering

operational cost. Modular SuperCELL’s only have four bolts and can be rebuilt in minutes instead of hours. Standard SuperCELL’s with

bolts along the frame are also available. SuperCELL’s are still the most economic choice for automotive e-coat tanks or larger industrial tanks. Custom designs to meet different tank and part criteria and configuration.

ANOLYTE SYSTEMS Synder offers a range of features including advanced conductivity controllers, ultrasonic level sensors, and UV systems in all sizes for both automotive and industrial e-coat systems.

CURRENT MONITORING SYSTEMSSynder’s advanced, compact CMS units output data via PLC showing real-time conditions in the tank with intuitive, icon-based PC software. Data can be easily manipulated to show historical trends, ‘‘hot spots’’ in the tank, and other important information.
