Grammar consist of a list of all the well formed sentences in the language.
Some sentences go on and on.Some sentences go on and on and on.Some sentences go on and on and on and on.Some sentences goes on and on and on and on and on.
What is ‘list as grammars’?
So, what is the problem?
The most obvious problem is the list will be too long. There is no finite bound on the length of English sentences.
Another list will come out even with slight changes on the sentences.
Human
brains are
finite and cannot store
infinite lists.
Sentences some go on and on.Sentences some go on and on and on.Sentences some go on and on and on and on.Sentences some goes on and on and on and on and..
So, is the theory relevant?
A certain theory of grammar fails to capture a
linguistically significant generalization is very common in
generative grammar.
If a characterization of the way the language works lead to redundancy and complications, it is assumed to be the wrong
characterization of the grammar.
There must be some more compact way of
encoding the grammatical knowledge that speakers of English possesses.
