LIST OF LENDERS AND OF THEIR PAINTINGS IN THE EXHIBITION OF OLD MASTERS
IN THE GALLERIES OF MESSRS. M. KNOEDLER & CO., NEVW YORK.
THE catalogue of the Exhibition of Old Masters, reviewed 1 in the article by Mr. Kobbe, did not give the names of the
present owners of the pictures. This information, and inter esting information it is to all lovers of art, The Lotus Maga zine is able to supply, save in the case of six of the pictures. The Lotus knows the owners of these; but having been re quested, for reasons which it appreciates, to withhold their names, it does so, although regretting that these collectors should not have availed themselves of the benefit accruing from the added value which this record is certain to give to their pictures.
A desire to know who are the owners of fine pictures is not merely idle curiosity. It really has the dignity of con temporary art history. Periods of art have been associated
with distinguished patrons and connoisseurs, as well as with artists and royal benefactors. It was suggested in Mr. Kobbe's review of the Exhibition that in time the "Parma" Velasquez would become known as the "gFrick" portrait of Philip IV by that artist, and doubtless other canvases that were in the show may in time be identified by the names of their American owners.
