FROM THE PRESIDENT

Mark Joyner

Wow! As I sit to write this column, I can’t believe that my year as President is more than half way over. But the time has been well spent; because, as a team—leadership, membership, and staff—we’ve accomplished some amazing things and there is still much more on tap for the remainder of the year.

We have smoothly converted to a new MLS system, Matrix. While I know Matrix isn’t perfect, it is a very good MLS system that works well in a mobile environment and is built for future innovation. If you’re interested in some quick tips on Matrix, check out my monthly videos in eNews which always feature a nifty, new Matrix trick. Speaking of MLS, be sure to attend an “MLS Road Rules” class. Each attendee earns one MLS fine waiver.

In addition to information on the “MLS Road Rules” class, in this edition of Listed you’ll find everything you need to get ready for REALTORfest. This year’s event features a fantastic line up of speakers, including actor/director Tim Reid and VCU President Mike Rao, as well as timely seminars and a number of new vendors in the Trade Show. See you October 28 at the Convention Center. Also, on page 12, check out photos from this year’s Affordable Housing Awareness Week. I had the privilege to participate in a service project with the RAR/CVR MLS Boards of Directors—hard work on behalf of others never felt so good. Affordable Housing Awareness Week is just one of the many ways that the 4,000 members of RAR give back to our community, and one of the many reasons I’m proud to be a part of this Association.

Another hearty thanks to all of our RPAC Major Donors, listed on pages 20-21. It’s the contributions of these donors and all of you who give to RPAC that make our legislative successes possible. Earlier this year, we helped the Virginia Association of REALTORS® pass landmark legislation—the First Time Home Buyer’s Savings Account. Now, you and your clients will be able to designate savings or stock accounts, etc., as “First Time Home Buyer” accounts and pay no state taxes on the interests/gains on the account. And when the account’s beneficiaries purchase their first home, they will pay no taxes on the funds from the account as well. We hope this law will one day make saving for that first home as prevalent as saving for kids’ college educations!

More information on the First Time Home Buyer savings account is available for you and your clients at www.WeAreTheR.com, RAR’s site that seeks to promote to the public the benefits of using a REALTOR®. The infographic, “What’s the Value of Using a REALTOR®?” is available at WeAreTheR.com and also as a flyer within Instanet—perfect for including in your listing packages.

Whether it’s our We Are The R campaign, lobbying efforts, educational classes, or a robust MLS, the services of RAR and CVR MLS are designed to enhance your professionalism and facilitate your ability to earn a living. I hope you will join me in continuing to take advantage of all that we have to offer.

LEARN THE RULES OF THE ROAD AND GET A MLS FINE WAIVERThe CVR MLS Board of Directors has approved a new program designed to increase MLS user understanding of the MLS Rules and Regulations and provide some financial relief in the event of a fineable rules infraction. As of July 1, 2014, CVR MLS users who attend the MLS Road Rules class will earn a “credit” that may be used to offset an MLS violation fine of up to $250. The “credit” may be applied to one MLS fine per calendar year. The Road Rules class must have been completed within the 12 months prior of the date of the MLS violation notice. THANK YOU AHAW VOLUNTEERS

On behalf of the Partnership for Housing Affordability, the Richmond Association of REALTORS® would like to express deep gratitude for all the efforts of its REALTOR® members who participated in volunteer projects during Affordable Housing Awareness Week this year. Thanks to the efforts of all who came out and gave a day of work for affordable housing. Registration for projects quickly filled, the objectives of several local housing nonprofits were met, and REALTORS® once again demonstrated their commitment to improving the communities they serve. Here are some photos from the event—a day of work never looked so fun.

REALTORFEST 2014:RVA ON THE RISE

RVA on the Rise! Richmond Virginia has had a banner year

with accolades for quality of life, employment, education

and affordability. REALTORfest 2014 will be a celebration

of the Richmond experience and lifestyle. This biennial

all-day event offers the largest real estate trade show in

Central Virginia and the most popular event offered by the

Richmond Association of REALTORS®. This year’s event

will be held at the Greater Richmond Convention Center

on October 28, 2014, from 8a.m. to 4p.m. In addition to a

trade show featuring more than 100 vendors, attendees

will have the opportunity to hear from a blue ribbon panel

of Richmond’s business elite, including Tim Reid, Director,

and Founder/President of New Millennium Studios in

Petersburg, Virginia. The panel discussion will feature

an in-depth look at the social, economic, and cultural

attributes that have made Richmond a rising star.

Tim Reid, New Millennium Studios

Tim Reid, the Emmy-nominated actor, director and producer,

has been a mainstay in the entertainment industry for the last

three decades. He is probably best known for his starring role

as “Venus Flytrap,” on the popular CBS television series “WKRP

in Cincinnati” from 1978–1982. Twice he has been nominated

for the NAACP Image Award for “Best Actor in a Comedy”

for his popular characters. Reid has had many starring roles

over the years in several television series, including “The

Richard Pryor Show,” “Simon & Simon,” “Frank’s Place,” “Snoops,”

“Save Our Streets,” and the hit WB series “Sister, Sister.”

Dr. Michael Rao, Virginia Commonwealth University/ VCU

Health System

As president of VCU and the VCU Health System, Dr. Rao leads

a national research university with a leading academic medical

center that is the largest employer in the Richmond area —

with about 20,000 employees — and the sixth largest in

Virginia. Rao is responsible for one of the nation’s most

comprehensive academic health centers, which is ranked
