Chapter 6Person to Person
Hearing refers only to the physical ability of your ears to pick up
sound waves.
Listening is a four-step process of
sensing, interpreting, examining and
responding.
Listening process
1. Sensing (hearing) what was said.

2. Interpreting what was meant.
Listening process
3. Examining the statement.
Listening process
4. Responding to it appropriately.
Your responses serve as feedback to the sender. Based on
the feedback, the sender may continue, change, or stop the
message.
Listening is the first communication skill
people learn.
