How are children taught to read?

PHONICS

“Phonics refers to a method for teaching speakers of English to read and write their language. It involves connecting

the sounds of spoken English with letters or groups of letters.” Literacy Trust

• Taught daily and systematically• Use Letters and Sounds programme• Taught from Term 1 in Reception• Phases 1-6 that all children progress through• Phonics teaches sounds as well as spelling

Phase 1

• ‘Tuning in’ to sounds• Listening for sounds

• Sounds in the environment around us• Sounds in our names and important words

• Joining in rhymes and songs

Phase 2

• Children learn initial sounds all taught with an action and a story behind them

• Children are introduced to 6 tricky words

Phase 3 • Children begin to learn:

digraphs – 2 letters that make 1 soundtrigraphs – 3 letters that make 1 sound

Phase 4 • Children consolidate all the sounds learnt in

phases 2 and 3 – SPEED BLENDING• Blends are taught – fl, gr, st, str, tch • More tricky words are taught

Phase 5 • Children learn new ways of making the same

sounds – sounds families • More tricky words are taught

Phase 6• Spelling patterns and rules

• Suffix and prefix – starts and ends of wordsfearful unhappy

• Links in with our SPaG sessions – understanding of spelling, punctuation and grammar.
