Castle Rock – The bluffs and castle-like turrets of stone fascinated Steinbeck and were featured in The Pastures of Heaven (1932). 16. Corral de Tierra Road, off Hwy 68 – Primary setting for several stories in Steinbeck’s The Pastures of Heaven (1932). 17. Fremont Peak State Park – Favorite boyhood haunt of John Steinbeck, he and Charley bade farewell to the Salinas Valley here in Travels with Charley (1962). Reached from San Juan Canyon Rd., San Juan Bautista. 18. Garland Ranch Park, Carmel Valley – Mack and the boys went frog hunting along the Carmel River in Cannery Row (1945). 19. King City – The town and the ranches around it, including that of Steinbeck’s grandfather, served as a setting in The Red Pony (1937) and The Long Valley (1938); the C. Z. Herbert Ranch is usually considered “Red Pony Ranch.” 20. Laureles Grade, connects Hwy 68 and Carmel Valley Road – Appears in Steinbeck’s The Pastures of Heaven (1932); two-lane road offers grand views of rolling hills and the bay. 21. The Lodge at Pebble Beach, Pebble Beach – Setting for the Mary Higgins Clark novel Weep No More My Lady (2000). (Much of the novel is set on the Monterey coast.) 22. Spreckels – The bunk houses and company store at Spreckels’ sugar mill were used as a setting in Of Mice and Men (1937). The book’s final scenes took place on the Salinas River nearer Soledad. Point Sur – Robinson Jeffers set his narrative poem “The Women at Point Sur” (1927) here. He used nearby Pfeiffer Point in his poem “Give Your Heart to the Hawks” (1933). 26. Post Ranch Inn – The Post Ranch and Big Sur characters inspired several short stories in Thom Steinbeck’s Down to a Soundless Sea (2003). Highway One. 27. Esalen Institute – Known for its world-class workshops (including both writing and film), Esalen’s property includes natural springs where Henry Miller soaked up inspiration in the early 1940s (Murphy Hot Springs).
