    The story revolves:

ii. The office of Ross and Bannisters

The place where Lucy works as a secretary.

Possible themes that can be found in the short story are

    determination, possessiveness, loyalty, loneliness,

    commitment, the supernatural, and compassion.

DETERMINATION: Despite the supernatural nature by which Ms.Broome badgers and demoralises Lucy, she shows no signs of giving in to

her demand. Instead, she is steadfast in defending her position as thesecretary.

POSSESIVENESS: Not even death could part Ms. Broome from whatshe feels is rightfully hers. She continues to haunt the office through herelectronic typewriter.

LOYALTY: As with her possessiveness towards her job, Ms. Broome was

also extremely loyal towards Mr. Bannister. Even after she passed on, herspirit continued in its endeavour to serve her employer. LONELINESS:Loneliness can be a strong influence in a person's life. Ms. Broome had nolife outside of her office. That made her more possessive of her position inthe company; a possessiveness that went beyond the grave.

COMMITMENT: This attribute can be clearly seen in both Lucy and Ms.Broome. Both are extremely committed to their profession. THE

SUPERNATURAL: It is interesting that such an integral character in the storyhappens to be an ethereal entity. Yet this theme is rather prominent in thestory.

COMPASSION: This theme holds water especially in the finalconfrontation between Lucy and Ms. Broome. It is not through hatred norcoercion that Lucy manages to outsmart Ms. Broome, rather, it was throughcompassion and understanding of Ms. Broomes intentions

Yes. There are many reasons why I enjoy the story

QWERTYUIOP written by Vivien Alcock. Firstly, I like

the storyline which is adventurous and interesting.

This story also had managed to make me scared and

give eerie feeling when the typewriter typed something

by itself and give a very scary warning to Lucy.

Next, I enjoy the story because I can learn many

interesting values. For an instance, the story teaches

me to always be responsible in all the things we

    involved.

The characters in this story also make the story

interesting. For an example, Lucy. She is extremely

brave woman as she determined to fight the typewriter

    back.

    Here are some moral values:

    i. We must not be blinded by physical attraction.

ii. Appreciate ourselves for who we are and not

    depend on the supernatural.

iii. Do not be deceived by flattery/ We should

    appreciate true/sincere love.

iv. We should respect the opinions of our elders.

    v. Hard work is the key to success.

vi. We must not compromise our dignity

  • 8/3/2019 Literature Component for Form 4

    23/37

Yes. There are many reasons for why I enjoy reading the

story of The Fruitcake Special written by Frank Brennam.

First and foremost, from this story, I can learn many moral

values that I can use in daily life. For an example, the value

of being hard work is a key to success. So, I have to always

try my best in doing something and never give up in

    achieving something.

Next, I love the main character of this story, Anna, as she is

very independence and creative woman. For my opinion,

thats what makes the story becomes more exciting.

The ending of the story also makes the story interesting as

at the end of the story, Amstrong, the pizza boy, had

confessed his love towards Anna after he managed to have

    his own pizza company.
