Holiday Retail Focus

According to a NationalRetail Federation report, 20to 40 percent of yearlysales for small and mid-sized retailers take placewithin the last two monthsof the year. Unfortunately, this time of year can beoverwhelming for smallbusiness owners. Puttingout daily “fires” can causeyou to lose site of any

strategic plan you’ve devel-oped. Here are a fewactions to consider and helpyou think strategically thisholiday season and beyond.

Take Notes – Data collec-tion is vital. However, it’soften a loathed activity. What information do youwish you had this holidayseason? Make sure youwon’t have to deal withthese same unknowns nextyear. Keep a diary of time-related data, notes andobservations on staffing lev-els, sales volume and gener-al store patterns to betterplan your schedule andresource allocations nextyear.

Take Pictures - Pictures ofyour in-store displays willfacilitate next year’s set-upand help avoid recreatingthe same look every year.Don’t hesitate to snap pics

of displays or promotionalefforts that are working forother businesses this holi-day season as well.

Think Past the Holidays –Returns and gift cards arecommon sights after theholidays. Grant Cardone ofEntrepreneur.com makes agreat point – returners andgift card users are notshoppers, they’re buyers.Focus on the fact that theywant to walk out withsomething in-hand. Askwhat they want for “free”and upsell with items thatcompliment their answers.

November began with our monthly Military Relations Committee (MRC) Luncheon. It wasstanding room only to hear COL Matt Lewis talk about the Combat Aviation Brigade’s (CAB)recent deployment to Afghanistan. His talk was detailed and insightful and detailed the variedmission carried out by the CAB while deployed.

November means Veteran’s Day and if you are looking for a Veteran’s Day Parade, Manhattan iscertainly the place to find it! Despite bracing cold, Manhattan came out to recognize our veter-ans, both active duty and retired. This year’s theme, Freedom is not Free, focused on the selflessdedication of those who serve and the parade recognized Vietnam Veterans from all branches ofservice by having several march in the parade as Grand Marshals. After the parade, DeputyCommanding General, Support, and Acting Senior Commander of the First Infantry Division andFort Riley BG Eric Wesley gave a speech at a commemorative program and luncheon (lunchprovided by Longhorn Steakhouse) at the Wareham Opera House.

The 30th annual Little Apple Brigade Ball was held at the Manhattan Country Club November15th. Manhattan’s Little Apple Brigade supports Fort Riley’s uniformed and civilian leaders to thebetterment of both Fort Riley and Manhattan. This year, 100 attendees enjoyed a lovely eveningsocializing and dancing, making friendships to last for years to come.

On Saturday, November 22nd, Manhattan hosted several Fort Riley spouses at our rebootedShopping Professional Development or SPD (formerly Downrange Downtown). Over 20 FortRiley spouses enjoyed brunch at Harry’s Deli, an afternoon of shopping our downtown shopsand Manhattan Town Center and dessert and coffee at Della Voce. Thank you to our sponsorsCorvais Military Living, Downtown Manhattan and Manhattan Town Center for a lovely after-noon.

Our next Military Relations Committee Luncheon will be Wednesday, December 3rd atManhattan Country Club.
