1. KEY DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Section 1

1. Visitor Experience and Management• Provide facilities which provide for a high quality visitor

experience and promote appreciation of the water quality and

catchments, natural and cultural heritage

• Design to encourage positive visitor behaviours in areas and

ways that ensures the protection of safety of drinking water.

2. Site Impact• Through facility planning and design, minimise and manage

potential impacts of visitor activities on water quality, biodiversity,

conservation values and site neighbours

3. Site Influence• Consider those physical, cultural and existing site use elements

within the site which affect the use and physical layout of

facilities.

4. Sense of Place and Identity• Consider the unique qualities of each site while balancing the

need for a cohesive State, regional and local identity using local

materials.

5. Levels of Service• Determine the appropriate levels of service for each site and

facility.

6. Design Quality• Promote a high level of design quality that meets location, visitor

numbers and ongoing maintenance requirements.

7. Materials• Choose materials for their contribution towards the overall

character and sense of identity of the facility and to meet ongoing

risk management and maintenance requirements. Use materials

that have low life cycle impacts and high reuse/recycled contents.

8. Environmentally Sustainable Design• Design facilities to meet environmentally sustainable design

standards for low energy, water and resource use.

9. Target Users• Recognise user types, their frequency of use and preferences in

the design of all facilities.

10. Buildability• Consider buildability in the design of facilities, particularly in

locations where access is constrained.

11. Safety and Risk Management• Comply with all statutory requirements and give preference to

accessible and safe design outcomes that appropriately manage

risk.

12. Fire

• Site and design facilities to recognise fire risk and provide for

visitor safety.

The following design principles will promote accessibility, celebrate and enhance the unique character of the landscape, and prioritise the protection of water quality.
