We are praying for that family whose name is written on our stone—I am praying regularly for a family I have never met. And we are fully immersed in our sense of stoniness, that we are the “living stones” upon which this Faith Community is built. As I ponder John’s phrase from which the living stones reference comes, and which Fr. Mike reminded us of in his letter at the front of the stewardship booklet, my eyes keep skipping past the stones phrase to that next part: “built up as a spiritual house.” Those of you who read this page each quarter know that I am a fan of the family-dinner-at-Thanksgiving metaphor for what we do as Liturgical Ministers. So it should come as no surprise that this reference to us as a spiritual house resonates with me. We are the hosts at the door, the servers of the food at table, the storytellers around the table, the helpers in the kitchen and at the table. And through our efforts the meal and the family festivity is made wonderful, wholesome, and worthy of the Guest in whose name we gather each week. As we enter this time of waiting (Advent), celebration (Christmas), and exploration of the ongoing mystery of Sunday (Ordinary Time), we understand that the depth to which this Faith Community experiences these seasons depend, in part, upon our efforts as hosts in this spiritual house we call the Church of St. Thomas More. The way in which we serve in our various ministries will shine upon our sisters and brothers in Christ, or not. I encourage you to shine. To welcome each guest and family member as if she or he were Christ knocking at our door. I look forward to waiting, celebrating, and exploring with you! — Douglas 1 of 14
