MAY 14, 2017
June is designated as Seniors Month by the government of Ontario. The theme is: Living Your Best Life. The Archdiocese of Toronto wishes to highlight the Ministry of Maturing Adults. This is a relatively new ministry emerging in churches to support the faith development of “maturing
adults” throughout the multiple transitions that mark the second half of life.
The goal of this ministry is to raise awareness of the potential for spiritual growth in the second half of life and to support initiatives in this ministry. To celebrate Maturing Adults, Immaculate Heart of Mary parish will be offering a retreat on “Praying with Scripture” as one such program on
“Spiritual Growth in the Second Half of Life” for all
Maturing Adults (50+) of the neighbouring parishes.Date: Monday, June 5, 2017Time: 9:30am – 3pmLocation: Church Hall of Immaculate Heart of Mary, 131 Birchmount Rd.Registration: please register with Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Office at 416.691.6968 prior to May 24, 2017.Cost: $5.00THE RETREAT
This retreat will focus on three parables in the Gospel of Matthew. It will offer three ways to pray with Scripture and Bible Study. This is no ordinary Bible study, because the presentations and discussions will be directed to developing your personal experience of God’s Word in your prayer life. It will also include small group sharing, quiet prayer time, praying the Rosary and Mass. Please bring a brown bag lunch. Refreshments will be provided for breaks and lunch. All are welcome. For more information please contact Lorraine Rozario at [email protected].

CWL POTLUCK Mark your calendar !!!
The Catholic Women’s League will be having a potluck on Sunday, June 4th after the 11 am Mass. Your contribution this event is always welcome.
FOOD AND DRINK IN CHURCHRespect for the House of the Lord
All Catholics must remember that entering into the Church is entering into the House of the Lord. The Eucharist is the Lord’s Supper and all families should teach their children from a very early age to be reverent and respectful in thepresence of God.
The Church teaches us that we should not consume food or drink one hour before the Mass – this is called the ‘Eucharist
Fast’ and reminds us that we are about to receive Jesus Christ himself in Communion. Water and medicine are permitted [if necessary]. It is important that children learn that entering the Church is different from going to the movies or concert.
Our culture has become casual about these things; but an adult carrying a coffee cup into a Church provides a bad witness to others, and this needs to be explained to children. Chewing gum is never appropriate at the Mass and should be discarded before entering the building. No one should come up to receive Communion with a piece of gum in his or her mouth.
Let us all keep the House of God tidy at all times – free from chewing gums and used tissues.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTERMAY 14, 2017
Reflection The gospel presents Jesus as the guide in life, as the ‘way, truth and life’. The Christian centre is the person of Christ. Our work for Jesus and our love for people, no matter what our calling in life, flow from this. Mother Teresa was once asked why she did what she did, and she simply said ‘for Jesus’. This centre always holds, it cannot
be unhinged. It is a deeply personal relationship: we are led by Jesus ‘one by one’, known by name, not as just one
of a group. ‘I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one
can come to the Father except through me.’ We follow
him as one we know, not a stranger. Studying his life and times, getting to know the places and events of his life, becoming familiar with the gospels and getting to know him in the heart in prayer is the way of keeping our centre of conviction and motivation strong. As this happens, freedom grows and we begin to find him everywhere.
Different types of people and spirituality stress different aspects of Jesus. The Easter approach to Jesus is very much the ‘way’; while the African is the ‘life’; the
European stress is the ‘truth’. In Europe we need to rediscover also the joy and vibrancy of the African and Latin American expressions of faith, and also the presence of God in all life’s moods and journeys of India and the
East. We can get so caught on small or even big truths and doctrines that we miss other centres of faith. All faith needs the balanced approach to Jesus, way, truth and life.
Prayer: Jesus, our way, guide me in life; Jesus, our
truth, teach me your meaning of life; Jesus, our life, love
me always.~ Fr. Donal Neary SJ ~
