The Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary

Pastor’s Corner: During the month of November we not only remember those who have died but also as a church we look to our own deaths. As we experience nature ‘dying’ we are focusing through the readings and prayers at Mass on our final end in death, as well as all the endings we experience in life. It helps us to realign our lives with that which is most important. I had come across something that author David Brooks had written that there are two kinds of virtues that define our lives. There are resume virtues such as success in our careers, the accumulation of wealth or possessions, and other trappings of a successful life. And then

there are eulogy virtues. These are ones that define our character and would be mentioned during our funerals. Eulogy virtues would include how we loved, helped others, embraced a higher purpose, and devoted our lives to a greater good. Eulogy virtues are Gospel virtues. The readings and prayers during these weeks of November remind us to focus upon and nurture the Gospel virtues while we live out our family and career lives. And to nurture these eulogy virtues we need help. This Tuesday is a day to honor cloistered men and women (Pro Orantibus Day – For Those Who Pray). It is a day of thanksgiving, solidarity, and support for contemplative religious who spend their lives in total dedication to God in union with Jesus and interceding for the salvation of all. Their constant prayers are holding us up as we strive to journey through life. Our prayers joining with theirs each day give us hope and security. It is a comfort to know that others are praying for us. May we include in our prayers this week all those who are dedicating their lives to praying for the Church.

Fr John

NOVEMBER MASSES: The month of November is dedicated to remembering in a special way those who have died. Near the Baptismal Font there will be the Book of Names of the Deceased and you are invited to add the names of loved ones who have died. All month we will be remembering them in our prayers during the masses. Please keep in your prayers our faithful departed and the families and friends who grieve their death. PRO ORANTIBUS DAY: On Tuesday, November 21, the Church will celebrate Pro Orantibus Day (“For Those Who Pray”). The faithful around the world are encouraged to develop their own way of commemorating the day and honoring cloistered women and men religious, at Mass and in other special ways, such as by offering up their prayers, by making visits to monasteries and cloistered convents, by sending cards or letters to contemplative religious. For more information visit www.clisteredlife.com. PRESENTATION OF MARY (Nov. 21) According to tradition, Mary spent her life at the Temple from the time she was a little girl. Her parents, Joachim and Anne, presented their young daughter to the Temple for service and study, in thanksgiving for the great gift God had given them through her. Today’s memorial celebrates this occasion. It also calls us to think about the ways we prepare and ready ourselves for Jesus Christ in our lives. Mary, conceived in grace, was prepared to carry the Son of God, but her time at the Temple helped form her mind and heart. Likewise, intentionally nurturing our relationship with God builds on the grace God offers each of us. What are some ways you can ready yourself to encounter Jesus Christ today? – Sourcebook 2017, Liturgy Training Publications p. 317.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION: Earlier this autumn, we looked at how our Eucharistic Prayers have been enriched by the approval of several new prayers to augment the old Roman Canon. For us, there are the four standard prayers, three for Masses with Children, and the most recent addition, the former Swiss Eucharistic Prayer with four alternative forms (now known as the Eucharistic Prayer for Masses for Various Needs and Occasions). We also have two Eucharistic Prayers for Masses of Reconciliation. The source for these two prayers is the request by many bishops for a special prayer for the “Holy Year” of 1975. Originally, the committee in charge was commissioned to write a single prayer, but the theme proved so rich that it gave rise to two. The first is based on and develops biblical texts on reconciliation. The second starts with the experience of living in today’s fractured world, and how the Spirit calls us to reconciliation and peace. Not everyone was happy with all this creativity, saying that if too many were published, it would be difficult for the Vatican to control further requests. Everyone thought the pope would put strict limits on the prayers, but in the end he said he was willing to open doors that had long been closed. Although he approved them for a period of only three years, they were never formally removed from the Sacramentary and have been incorporated into the new Roman Missal. —Rev. THE CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT (CCHD) Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, said, “The measure of the greatness of a society is found in the way it treats those most in need, those who have nothing apart from their poverty.” Please join in the Church’s mission to help the most vulnerable among us at today’s collection. Defend human dignity. Please give to the CCHD Collection. GIVING TREE: With the start of Advent, the Helping Hands Ministry will be setting out the mittens for the Christmas Giving Tree. LECTORS: Please pick up your 2018 workbook in the St. Joseph’s room. Please sign you initials next to your name on the sheet acknowledging that you have picked up your workbook.

SPOT LIGHT: Our spotlight this weekend is the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Stop by their table in the Gathering Area after mass this weekend to

see what they are all about and how they help others in the church and the community. There will be a bake/craft “free will” donation sale and you may also purchase tickets to win a Christmas Quilt. WOMEN OF FAITH: This new ministry will gather on Monday, December 4th, at 7:00pm in room 1 of the Parish Hall. Women of all ages are welcome to come together to support each other on our faith journeys and grow spiritually in community. The theme of our first gathering will be New Beginnings. GIVING TUESDAY: You have heard about Black Friday and Cyber Monday – now you can share your blessings on Tuesday, 28 November – Giving Tuesday. All day around the globe people are asked to contribute to their favorite charities and nonprofits. The Diocese of Cleveland asks you to be part of Northeast Ohio’s Online Day of Catholic Giving: #weGiveCatholic, which allows you to contribute to over 160 Catholic schools, parishes, Catholic Charities programs and sites, ministries and other Catholic nonprofits in Northeast Ohio. Simply use your computer or smartphone on Tuesday, 28 November to access www.weGiveCatholic.org, search the list of participants and donate to your favorites. In the spirit of the season, remember to Give Catholic on Giving Tuesday. LIFE TIME ACHIEVEMENT: We give thanks to Wanita Grondin for a life time of service as the church organist, director, instructor and all the other music roles that she has filled. Wanita started playing for the church in the 1950s and there are few married couples in the area that did not have her as the organist for their wedding. Although the priests came and went over the years, Wanita was the common thread in the church that held things together with tireless and quiet devotion to the Catholic faith. She taught over the years in the CCD and PSR programs as well as teaching music and love of God through music to the entire congregation. Wanita embodies the scripture passage from Colossians 3:16: “Let the word of God, rich as it is, dwell in you. In wisdom made perfect, instruct and admonish one another. Sing gratefully to God from your hearts in psalms, hymns, and inspired songs. Whatever you do, whether in speech or in action, do it in the name of the Lord Jesus. Give thanks to God the Father through him.” Thank you Wanita for your witness of service and love of God that you have shown us over the years. PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY: Our next meeting will be on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 10:30am in room 1 of the Parish Hall. Anyone is welcomed whether you can knit, crochet, sew or tie-knot fleece. Join us for fellowship and sharing. Any questions, call Kathy Smeltz at 419-544-2491 or Sue Schneigenberg at 440-926-1610. See everyone Saturday. THE COMPASSIONATE FRIENDS: will be meeting at the Parish Hall 702 Erie Street, Grafton, OH, on Monday, November 27th at 7:00pm.
