The Year of Saint Mark
The Feast of the Epiphany (Sunday Readings: of year B: Breviary: Week i) 07.01.18.
Scripture : Isaiah 60:1-6
Psalm 71
R: All nations shall fall prostrate
before you, O Lord.
O God, give your judgement to the king,
to a kings son your justice,
that he may judge your people in justice
And your poor in right judgement.
In his days justice shall flourish
and peace till the moon fails.
He shall rule from sea to sea,
from the great river to the earths bounds.
The Kings of Tarshish and the sea coasts/
shall pay him tribute.
The Kings of Sheba and Seba
shall bring him gifts.
Before him all kings shall fall prostrate
all nations shall serve him.
For he shall save the poor when they cry
and the needy who are helpless.
He will have pity on the weak
and save the lives of the poor.
Ephesians 3:2-3, 5-6
Alleluia Acc: We saw his star as it rose and
have come to do the Lord homage.
Matthew 2:1-12
Response: Lord graciously, hear us.
The Wise Men came from the East
We know very little about the three Wise Men (the
Magi) whose visit to the Christ child we recall
today. We know that their traditional names are
Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar; we know that they
were learned men in the arts/sciences to interpret the
sign of the star; but above all we know they were not
afraid of the mystical. What made them truly wise
was that they were prepared to journey for twelve
months to find the answer to a mystery, that
ultimately brought them to encounter God himself.
Even in today’s world there is a mystical quality to the
East, anyone who has visited China, Japan, Nepal
etc. can’t help be captivated by their exotic
nature. Even in faith they have a profound sense of
mystery and journeying towards answers the deity
wishes to reveal. Something we are less fond of in
the Western world, where empirical proof and how I
feel override any sense of mystery and journeying
that God calls us to.
There is an Eastern tradition on the Epiphany; to
recall the visit of the Magi, families seek God’s
blessing on their homes using chalk. In the interest of
mystery and the spirit of the Wise Men, at all Masses
today we will be blessing chalk for us to use to bless
our homes for this new year. You will be able to
collect some chalk and an explanation leaflet from the
front of the church after Mass.
Caspar, Mechior, Balthazar –
Christus Masionem Benedictat –
Christ bless this home
During the rite of blessing there are two responses to
be made, which are show below..
The Responses
Priest: Our help is in the name of the Lord:
People: The maker of heaven and earth.
Priest: The Lord shall watch over your going out and your coming in:
People: From this time forth for evermore.
