Description:
This book details the process I took when designing a corporate office for Liv-Chic, a residential and furniture design firm currently located in New York City. This book was the culmination of my project which took place in my ARC 403 studio at Miami University. The prompt was to design an office for a firm as though they were to open a new office in Cincinnati.

About Liv-Chic...

*Founded in 2006 by lead designer Hilary White. A main reason she cites for going out on her own was the desire for more Creative Freedom.

*Specializes in Modern Baroque Interior Design and Furniture Consctuction

*Inspired by the Romantic lines of the Baroque perdiod. Loves blending the Fanciful Lines with Bold Prints and Bright Colors

*Main area of focus is on Residential Design. Hilary has designed a few Clothing Stores and also expresses a desire to design a Boutique Hotel if she ever gets the chance. As a whole, she considers herself an artist and is always looking to expand her brand and experiences.

*Puts a lot of emphasis on Curiousity and Exploration of various forms of creative media. She feels that this and going into projects with an unbi-ased and excited frame of mind enable her to treat each project as a Unique and Individualized piece.

*Focuses on creating a Blend between the Baroque design that she specializes in and a more Modern and clean aesthetic. While she loves the Female and Delicate pieces, she also harbors a fervid appreciation for the Contrast between Masculine and Feminine lines and design.

Plans For The Future...

*Opening a store in Charleston, S.C. Would like to contine expanding and opening store, possibly one in Palm Springs, FL. in the future. The stores will sell both her furniture and clothing.

*Wedding rentals. Hilary would like to rent out furniture pieces for people’s special day. She would fill a warehouse with the items and make them available as needed for people who love the style but are unable to commit for their entire home.

*Expanding her design lines and making them more affordable and more available to people via stores like Target. This will increase exposure and allow more people to purchase her work.

*Hiring the perfect business partner!

*Liv-Chic will be making the move from a Sole Proprietorship to a larger firm and will be experiencing that growth in a new city, Cincinnati! The firm will be moving into the first and second floor of the 302 West Third Street Building.

*The First floor of their building will serve as a store for the company to sell their furniture line to the general public and will also serve as a connection to their physical office upstairs.

*As previously mentioned, the company will experience rapid growth in size. It will expand to encompass approximately thirty five to forty employees with additional room for further expansion.

Office Visit InformationOver the course of this studio we visited and analyzed several office spaces inhabited by design firms. At each space, we learned something new about how an office works. This list of offices visited includes...

*BHDP *BHDP inhabited the same building that our project was located in. It served as site visit. *BHDP stressed the importance of large conference rooms as well as an open plan office. They felt these things improved their work.*FRCH *FRCH is a larger firm that utilized several floors of one building as an office. Each floor belonged to a specific branch of the office. *FRCH’s library served as an inspiration for mine because of its size and design.*Steel Case *Steel Case is a furniture design and reserach company that stressed the importance of using a variety of furniture systems to get the most of of an office. They also stressed the importance of creating homey conference rooms that people would want to inhabit.*Herman Miller *Herman Miller stressed the importance of communal spaces to encourage people to work as a team and have less formal meetings. They also stressed the importance of an open plan for all employees.

Concept...

Glorifying the Evolution and

Duality of the Modern Woman to

Create a Revolutionary, Modern Baroque Space

Liv-Chic is inspired by the sweeping and grand design of the Baroque and Rococo time periods. Work at this time was ground breaking, and stunningly beautiful. Design became more personal at this point, with great emphasis being placed upon bedroom design and personal chambers for each individual in the house. Each space was designed around a concept or concetto which allowed for the spaces to tell stories and become something unexpected. Order and symmetry were important during the Baroque period; however, as Rococo became the popular style of design, that regularity broke down and allowed for the ceation of playful, beatiful spaces. Nature and the female form were the main concepts at this point, and the flowing curves of these inspiration points filled a room, coating the structure in a delicate yet insistent overlay of natural forms overcame the structure associated with past design projects. The delicate women of this era broguth about a wealth of beautiful and playful design aesthetic.

Today, women have more freedoms than ever before. They have the opportunity to write their own stories and be their own woman, and they are even more beautiful and captivating as a result. These strong, independent women should be glorified. Gone are the days of the silent women in their petticoats and frothy skirts with their demure personalities. Today a woman can be exactly what she desires. They can be strong, daring, sexy, bright, glamorous, dramatic, shocking, feminine, edgy, daring, independent, rough, tough, glitzy, or anything that their heart desires. Today, this individuality and freedom is what makes women beautiful.

Liv-Chic is committed to designing beautiful spaces, each of which tell their own stories and reflect upon the people who will one day inhabit them. They are strong and beautiful in their own way. Each is a story that unveils itself over time and pays tribute to the people who inhabit it. As curators of such personal design, I want their office to reflect upon their story telling abilities in a space by creating an office that glorifies the woman warriors of modern day.

Make the Office Space more of a reflection on the Baroque style from the

rest of the office.

Also, offer a variety of flooring options to soften the space.
