Danville
Lexingtonixiingt Welcome to Boyle County, home to what is quickly becoming one of the most celebrated cities in the country: Danville. Not only has Danville been selected as one of the Top 10 Small Towns in America by Livability.com, but it also landed on our Top 10 Towns for Historic Preservation list. The city has received a Great American Main Street Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and was picked as one of the “Best of the Road” by Rand McNally. Money magazine named it the fourth-best place to retire in 2011.
Residents here enjoy a small-town atmosphere with a full helping of cultural amenities including festivals that unite the community. Constitution Square is a historic landmark in downtown Danville, where the state constitution was signed. It’s also a gathering place for many events such as the Kentucky BBQ Festival and a series of outdoor movies known as the Lawn Chair Theater. Boyle County is also home of the Great American Brass Band Festival, and the Perryville Battlefield. This area gets the full benefit of all four seasons, and outdoor recreation, such as hiking, fishing and biking, can be enjoyed throughout the year.
Downtown Danville has shops and restaurants located in historic buildings. Boyle County is home to a variety of businesses including nationally known manufacturing companies like Timberland, Panasonic, AdMart and Caterpillar. The Danville-Boyle County Airport accommodates corporate jets and provides hanger space. Recent roadway improvements have made getting to major transportation routes easier.
There’s a saying in Boyle County, which sums up the way residents and business owners feel: “It’s better here.”

FestiveStaying
“There’s so much energy here and a proud ownership among the people who care so much about making Danville a great place to live and visit,” says Jennifer Kirchner, executive director of the Danville/Boyle County Convention and Visitors Bureau. “People in Danville and Boyle County are so welcoming and friendly. It’s part of their DNA.”
KENTUCKy STaTE bbQ FESTiValOne of Danville’s newest traditions is the Kentucky
State BBQ Festival, launched in 2011. During the two-day event, pitmasters from all over the United States converge on Danville’s Constitution Square to cook up mouthwatering barbecue for festival-goers.
The first BBQ Festival was an overwhelming success. Organizers hoped to attract between 5,000 and 10,000 people and ended up drawing more than 25,000.
“We were excited and proud to have such a huge crowd, but we ran out of food the first day. We had to go out and buy more meat and put it on to cook overnight for the next day,” says Brad Simmons, co-founder of the Kentucky State BBQ Festival.
Danville and Boyle County citizens sure know how to throw a party. The community calendar includes at least a
half-dozen annual festivals and events that bring people together for fun, food and fellowship.

About 40,000 people showed up for the second BBQ Festival in 2012 and sampled barbecue from six pitmasters from Florida, New York, Iowa, Tennessee and Mississippi. Live blues and Southern rock bands provided entertainment.
“People are passionate about barbecue. It’s something that crosses every economic, racial and social line,” Simmons says. “When people start smelling the smoke, they relax and have a good time. With all the fast food and fast technology today, it’s nice to settle down and do something that’s slow. Good barbecue can’t be rushed.”
The 2013 BBQ Festival is slated for the second weekend of September and will be even bigger than before.
“We plan to have eight or nine pitmasters to help handle the crowd,” Simmons says.
FESTiValS aND EVENTSIn April, Boyle County’s historic
Penn’s Store sponsors the Kentucky Writers’ Day Celebration. And every June, more than 40,000 people come to Danville’s Great American Brass Band Festival, a weekend of music, food and children’s activities held on the lawn at Centre College.
“It’s one of my favorite events. Friday night we have a Bayou & Brass street festival with music, contests and New Orleans food, like gumbo and beignets,” Kirchner says. “We basically bring Mardi Gras to Danville.”
October is jam-packed with festivities, from the Heart of Danville Main Street Program’s Oktoberfest Craft Beer Celebration to the Forkland Heritage Festival & Revue, Bourbon Chase and the Perryville Battlefield Reenactment.
“The Forkland festival has a family reunion feel, with home-cooking, crafts and quilting,” Kirchner says. “And Bourbon Chase is a cool event where teams run a 200-mile relay race along the whole bourbon trail, with two stops in Danville.”
Besides enhancing Danville’s quality of life, festivals have a significant economic impact on the local economy. From 2011 to 2012, Boyle County saw a 9 percent increase in tourism revenues.
“Sometimes people overlook how valuable tourism is,” Kirchner says. “Events that bring visitors to Boyle County are a huge shot in the arm for our economy.”

Listen Uptaking place annually on the lawn at centre college and drawing thousands of attendees, the Great american Brass Band Festival showcases the world’s top brass musicians from a wide variety of backgrounds and genres. in addition to free concerts and performances, the festival includes music, food, children’s activities and events such as the main street parade and the great american picnic.

More than 51 million people focused their eyes on Danville on Oct. 11, 2012, as Centre College hosted the internationally televised vice presidential debate between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan. It was the second time Centre College had hosted such a high-profile debate, having hosted the vice presidential debate in 2000.
“We set the standard for hosting a debate in 2000, and since then we have improved our facilities and maintained about 85 percent of the same staff,” says Michael Strysick, director of communications for Centre College. “The Associated Press said our hosting was ‘as close to flawless as humanly possible.’ So many reporters, production crews and tech crews have urged us to host again since they had such a positive experience here.”
The 2012 debate attracted 3,200 credentialed media personnel, 600 of whom were members of the international media representing 40 different countries. Upwards of 150 community volunteers and 400 campus volunteers supported the debate effort.
“Ours was the third-highest viewed VP debate,” Strysick says. “Danville, Boyle County and Kentucky all shined when the international spotlight was cast in our direction as Centre lived up to its name as the center of the political universe.”
Above all, Strysick says, the overwhelming success of the debate showed the world that small places can do very big things.
“Centre remains the smallest college to host a general election debate,” he says, “and Danville is the smallest community.”

Jody Lassiter, president/CEO of the Danville/Boyle County Economic Development Partnership is especially pleased that Danville was named the No. 1 micropolitan area in Kentucky for new and expanding business projects. That lofty recognition was courtesy of Site Selection magazine.
“Site Selection is primarily read by industrial developers and is the Wall Street Journal of economic development,” Lassiter says. “It’s the magazine that site selection consultants and economic developers really pay attention to. Recognition from Site Selection is very satisfying for us.”Lassiter says Danville has good reason
to make the magazine’s list because the city has experienced industrial growth and expansions in recent times. That includes expansions at American Greetings, Caterpillar, Dana Corp. and Denyo, while a
Central Kentucky Cancer Center has opened to serve regional cancer patients.
“In addition, British-based Meggitt Aircraft Braking Systems constructed a manufacturing facility in Danville in 2006, and they recently wanted to build another facility,” Lassiter says. “They narrowed their search to us and eight other states,
and ultimately chose Danville – for the second time.”NICE PLACE TO RETIREBesides industry, Danville is getting attention on the retirement front. CNN Money ranked the city among the 25 Best
Places to Retire in the U.S., citing reasons such as affordable housing prices, low crime rate, amenities, cost of living, and
reasonable distances to larger communities such as Lexington and Louisville.“As a result, Danville has been receiving many inquiries from retirees since that announcement,” Lassiter says.
“Additionally, Bankrate.com named Danville one of the 10 Best Places to Retire

Only a few school districts in the United States teach entrepreneurship to students, and Danville and Boyle County are two of those districts.
Young Entrepreneurs Academy, or YEA!, is a 33-week program that helps students develop business ideas, write business plans, conduct research, and pitch their plans to “Shark Tank” investors to launch their own companies.
Eleven students from grades 6-12 in the Boyle County and Danville public school districts were chosen for the current inaugural YEA! program for 2012-13. The Danville-Boyle County Chamber o f Commerce played a key role in bringing the YEA! initiative to this region.
“Interested students applied for the program through their guidance counselors, then went through an interview process and are taking the academy course along with their other middle school or high school subjects,” says Paula Fowler, executive director with the Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce. “As this program progresses in future years, we hope to open it to other schools in our region.”
Fowler says the idea is to teach students how to create jobs.
“Quite a few local companies are involved with this program, with Walmart serving as the major sponsor,” she says.
The program features guest speakers from the local business community, and trips to local companies. Students eventually pitch their business plan and hopefully get seed funding from a Shark Tank-type panel, with the hit TV show Shark Tank being one of the program’s national partners.
“We are the first in Kentucky to take on this program, which was founded in 2004 in New York,” Fowler says.WoRK READY CoMMUNITY

which assures that local workforces have the talent necessary to staff existing jobs and to master the innovative technologies new jobs will require in the future. Kentucky’s program is designed to transform local economies and give counties a competitive advantage in attracting new businesses and jobs.
To earn Work Ready Community certification counties must meet
established criteria in six areas, which include educational excellence, community commitment and digital literacy.
“It’s an attractive designation for companies looking to move into our area, or for existing companies looking to expand and further invest in our communities,” says Fowler.

“BCIF has been a part of every industrial project recruited to Boyle County since December 1961,” says Jody Lassiter, president and CEO of the BCIF and the Danville/Boyle County Economic Development Partnership. “Our record includes a ‘who’s who’ of Danville industries: R.R. Donnelley & Sons, American Greetings, Caterpillar, Hobart, Dana, Panasonic, Timberland, and Meggitt Aircraft Braking Systems.”
PrEPariNg a COmmUNiTySince 1961, BCIF has developed several
industrial sites and parks to house the factories and businesses that would
eventually follow. The group started by developing sites along Stewarts Lane and Lebanon Road, and continued with planned parks at Enterprise Center and John Hill Bailey Industrial Park.
In addition to preparing sites for business, BCIF has prepared the local workforce to meet the needs of potential employers. The group led the community effort and donated the land to build the Danville campus of Bluegrass Community & Technical College. “The college has been a critical factor to our new industrial recruitment and service for training to existing industries,” Lassiter says.
Half a century ago, a group of local visionaries, led by the Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce, had the foresight to form the Boyle County Industrial
Foundation (BCIF), and the county has never been the same since. The BCIF has spent 50 years working to make Danville and Boyle County the type of community that is attractive to businesses, and subsequently recruiting businesses to keep the area’s residents employed and the economy flourishing.

Major transportation improvement projects are underway in Danville and Boyle County that will relieve traffic congestion and create new avenues for shipping freight.
A new east-west corridor, called the Kentucky 2168 Connector Extension, will extend the current KY 2168 from KY 33 (Shakertown Road) and KY 34 (Lexington Road). This extension “will provide a critical traffic bypass for truck and passenger traffic, relieving traffic congestion downtown on Main Street and Lexington Avenue,” says Jody Lassiter, president and CEO of the Danville/Boyle County
Economic Development Partnership. The new four-lane reconstruction of U.S. Highway 27 has been completed in Garrard County to a new intersection with KY 34 just east of the Boyle County line. This reconstruction has improved another corridor to south Lexington and to Blue Grass Airport, reducing travel time.
The construction of U.S. 150 represents a new “super” two-lane highway from just east of Stanford to Mount Vernon, which puts Danville 10 minutes closer in drive time to Interstate 75.
By Nancy Mann Jackson
In 2006, the BCIF board of directors took the lead in forming the Danville/Boyle County Economic Development Partnership. BCIF is the only economic development organization partner that financially supports the EDP and shares its executive with the EDP.
Notably, BCIF has executed all these successes “without one cent of public funding for 50 years,” Lassiter says. Instead, the foundation has financed its operations through the issue of investor shares, the subsequent sales of its land, and the reinvestment of its proceeds.
bUilDiNg aND maiNTaiNiNgAs BCIF has recruited business
and industry to the county, it has helped shape the local economy. “BCIF has largely built a diverse industrial base for Danville/Boyle County that over the years has created thousands of jobs for men and women in our community and region,” Lassiter says. “These good incomes have provided consumers with the buying power to purchase goods and services from retailers and service providers. And, these industries and their employees have furnished a significant tax base for city and county governments in Boyle County.”
The foundation aims to continue building and maintaining a strong base of industry in the region. BCIF now owns and leases industrial buildings as a new mode of investment and income to ensure that the foundation will remain well-financed. And the BCIF’s primary goal is “to continue to give Boyle County a competitive edge for new business recruitment and existing business growth in what is a more challenging economic environment,” Lassiter says. Here’s to another 50 years.
