Welcome to the official opening of Ballet Vero Beach’s 2020-2021 Season. While our eighth season looks and feels entirely different from any we have ever presented, I am proud of the resiliency of our organization and our community. Whether you are joining us in the theater or from your home this year, I must begin by saying a heartfelt welcome and also thank you for sticking with us throughout the difficulties of the past year or so.

I am truly in awe and proud of what our organization has been able to accomplish despite these challenging times. I draw inspiration from spending time in the studio with Camilo, Katherine, Anders, and dancers from our Sister Company, Dimensions Dance Theatre of Miami. These artists, colleagues throughout the world, along with our many supporters and well wishers, have pushed me to do more, be more, and dance more. The results have been simply astounding.

From having our work featured on South Florida PBS, to glowing reviews of our digital offerings pouring in from around the globe, to navigating a successful fundraiser in the digital space, it has not been easy, and at times I have wanted to simply crawl into a hole and pull it in after me (10 points to the musical theater buff who knows what show that quote is from), but we are here. And all things considered, here is a remarkable place to be.

I have oft promised in these notes that as long as you all keep showing up, we will keep dancing. I think that given the present circumstances, it is time to change that phrasing. I promise that whether you all can show up or not, we will keep dancing and trying to effect positive change in our community and beyond. We have learned this past year that it is necessary, welcome, and needed.

Thank you so much for joining us, and enjoy the performance!ADAM SCHNELL

constant motion we may long for the past or rush towards the future. Right in the middle there is the present, and while there’s still music...let’s dance.

Yanis Eric Pikieris is a young up and coming second generation choreographer from Miami. His first work for Ballet Vero beach is loosely inspired by a series of paintings by Hungarian contemporary artist Robert Pelles. The work exhibits his energetic and fully

realized contemporary use of the ballet form.

The world premiere of Around Midnight is made possiblewith support from Rohit and Katharine Desai and Roxanne Leighton.

PLAYING WITH STRINGSMain Stage Premier (Premiered January 2020 by Ballet Vero Beach)

Katherine Eppink or Anders SoutherlandThis tour de force solo was originally choreographed to be danced by the

choreographer. With the passing of the material to other dancers, the piece takes on the personality of the interpreter. The dancer is directly motivated by the rhythms and

melodies played to be virtuosic, sensuous, perhaps a little sad, and of course playful.

Additionally, we provide absolutely free student matinee performances to 1st, 3rd, and 4th graders in Indian River County. Please support our partner organizations, local educators, and funders in these endeavors. We hope you will make our guests feel welcome, and thank our entire community for recognizing that the arts are an integral part of our society.
