Confession and Forgiveness You are invited to make the sign of the cross on your forehead, the sign marked at baptism.

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God,

whose steadfast love is everlasting,

whose faithfulness endures from generation to generation.

Amen.

Trusting in the mercy of God, let us confess our sin.

A time of silence is kept for reflection.

Reconciling God,

we confess that we do not trust your abundance,

and we deny your presence in our lives.

We place our hope in ourselves

and rely on our own efforts.

We fail to trust that you provide enough for all.

We abuse your good creation for our own benefit.

We fear difference and do not welcome others as you have welcomed us.

We sin in thought, word, and deed.

By your grace, forgive us;

through your love, renew us;

and in your Spirit, lead us;

as we live and serve you in newness of life. Amen.

Beloved of God, by the radical abundance of divine mercy

we have peace with God through Christ Jesus,

through whom we have obtained grace upon grace.

As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority,

I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins,

in the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Greeting

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,

and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. 2 Corinthians 13:13

And also with you.

Prayer of the Day

O God our defender, storms rage around and within us and cause us to be afraid.

Rescue your people from despair, deliver your sons and daughters from fear,

and preserve us in the faith of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Welcome

☩Palabra/Word

First Reading 1 Kings 19:9-18

9At Horeb, the mount of God, Elijah came to a cave, and spent the night there.

Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 10Elijah answered, “I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the

Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets

with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.” 11The Lord

said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass

by.” Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking

rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an

earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; 12and after the earthquake a fire, but

the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence. 13When Elijah heard

it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.

Then there came a voice to him that said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 14He answered,

“I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken

your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone

am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.” 15Then the Lord said to him, “Go,

return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael

as king over Aram. 16Also you shall anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel; and you

shall anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as prophet in your place. 17Whoever

escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu shall kill; and whoever escapes from the sword of

Jehu, Elisha shall kill. 18Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not

bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”

Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 85:8-13 The assembly sings the verses in bold type.

8I will listen to what the Lord | God is saying;

for you speak peace to your faithful people and to those who turn their | hearts to you.

9Truly your salvation is very near to | those who fear you,

that your glory may dwell | in our land.

10Steadfast love and faithfulness have | met together;

righteousness and peace have | kissed each other.

11Faithfulness shall spring up | from the earth,

and righteousness shall look | down from heaven.

12The Lord will indeed | grant prosperity,

and our land will | yield its increase.

13Righteousness shall go be- | fore the Lord

and shall prepare for | God a pathway.

The assembly welcomes the gospel as the Word dwells among us.

Gospel Matthew 14:22-33

The holy gospel according to Matthew.

Glory to you, O Lord.

22Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side of the Sea of

Galilee, while he dismissed the crowds. 23And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went

up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24but by this

time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against

them. 25And early in the morning Jesus came walking toward them on the sea. 26But when

the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, “It is a ghost!” And

they cried out in fear. 27But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, “Take heart, here I

am; do not be afraid.”

28Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came

toward Jesus. 30But when Peter noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and

beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31Jesus immediately reached out his hand

and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32When they got

into the boat, the wind ceased. 33And those in the boat worshipped him, saying, “Truly you

are the Son of God.”

The gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

Prayers of Intercession

Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

Prayers reflect the wideness of God’s love, mercy, justice, healing, and comfort — for the church universal, and for the mission of the gospel; for peace among faith traditions and all people of goodwill; for the well-being and stewardship of creation; for peace and justice in the world, the nations and those in authority, and this civic community; for all black lives, and all people of color, who are abused by white supremacy and fragility; for all indigenous people, that they may be comforted with our actions of redress; for the poor, hungry, oppressed, refugees, immigrants, bereaved, those on trial, imprisoned, and vulnerable; for those who manage and volunteer in food pantries and shelters; for those without a home or safe shelter; for those underemployed or unemployed; for those who are lonely, those who are alone, and those who are rejected; for science, medicine, and healthcare in all its forms; for all who teach, serve, protect, govern, care, feed, advocate, and defend; for those suffering from and responding to emergencies, severe weather, natural disasters, and pandemics; for all who suffer or are ill in body, mind, spirit, and relationship; for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people, that all may be protected and celebrated; for those expecting a birth, those who are newly born, and for their families; for all families, including families with children; for all elderly, for strength and quality living; for those near death, and for those who have recently died, including those dying from COVID-19; for this congregation, council, and child development center, our ministry, our outreach, and all our leaders; for the joys and concerns we each bring, for our loved ones, and for our enemies.

Because of the online nature of our praying together, names of people have been omitted.

Commemorations and remembrances for this week are listed on page 15 of this bulletin.

In the Sending, the assembly receives God’s blessing and is dismissed with reminders of God’s presence as we go to serve God’s mission in the world through direct words and actions.

Lord’s Prayer

Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us:

☩Envio/Sending

Announcements Blessing

Almighty God bless us,

defend us from all affliction,

and fill us with love for one another and our neighbors

☩ until we gather again in the joy of the Spirit.

Amen.

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those

who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial

and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours,

now and forever. Amen.

Padre nuestro que estás en el cielo,

santificado sea tu nombre.

Venga tu reino.

Hágase tu voluntad

en la tierra como en el cielo.

Danos hoy nuestro pan de cada día.

Perdona nuestras ofensas

como también nosotros

perdonamos a los que nos ofenden.

No nos dejes caer en tentación

y líbranos del mal.

Porque tuyo es el reino, tuyo es el poder

y tuya es la gloria,

ahora y siempre. Amén

FELC Book Club Meets Online Tonight at 6:30 pm Tonight we’ll discuss Madame Blavatsky’s Baboon: A History of the Mystics, Mediums, and Misfits Who Brought Spiritualism to America, by Peter Washington. We're meeting on Zoom from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. While we miss our potluck dinners, we can have dinner while we talk and catch up, and then discuss our book. Everyone is always welcome. For Zoom meeting info., contact Anne ([email protected]).

Commemorations & Remembrances This Week Saint Lawrence, deacon, martyr, died 258—Monday, August 10 As one of the seven deacons of the church at Rome, Lawrence was responsible for the church’s financial matters and for the care of the poor. Asked by the emperor to gather the church's treasure, he presented a collection of orphans, lepers, and the like. The enraged emperor had him put to death. Saint Clare, Abbess of San Damiano, died 1253—Tuesday, August 11 A contemporary of Francis of Assisi, Clare and a growing number of companions established a women’s Franciscan community, called the Order of Poor Ladies, or Poor Clares. She inspired other women. Florence Nightingale, died 1910; Clara Maass, died 1901; renewers of society—Thursday, August 13 Nightingale, born in England, and horrified her wealthy family by deciding to become a nurse. She led a group of nurses in ministering in the midst of the Crimean War, and worked for hospital reform. Maass, a native of New Jersey, was a war nurse, and volunteered as a subject for research on yellow fever, dying of the disease. Maximilian Kolbe, died 1941; Kaj Munk, died 1944; martyrs—Friday, August 14 Father Kolbe, a Franciscan priest, was arrested by the Nazis and confined in Auschwitz. Kolbe gave generously of his meager resources, and finally volunteered to be starved to death in place of another man. A Danish Lutheran pastor and playwright, Munk strongly denounced the Nazis who occupied Denmark in the Second World War. His sermons and articles helped to show the anti-Christian nature of the movement. Mary, Mother of Our Lord and God—Saturday, August 15 The church (including Martin Luther) honors Mary with the title theotokos, meaning “God-bearer,” for her role in giving birth to the Son of God, and her persistence. Her song, Magnificat, speaks of God’s justice.

Worship Resources for Home Communion Pastor Coffey and the church council have discussed the need for a way for members who desire communion

to share in the meal during this period when we are unable to gather together. Pastor Coffey is now making

available a service of communion to be used in the home during the pandemic. “The Table Extended: A Home

Communion Service During a Time of Pandemic” is available on our web page: https://www.felcaustin.org/

home-worship-resources. It includes Pastor Coffey’s explanation and guidance for why and how to share

communion at tables in the home as an extension of the communion table we normally gather around at the

church. This web page includes a resource document for home worship that includes all prayers of the day

and Scripture readings for each Sunday. Also available on this web page is “Songs for Home Worship”, a

collection of songs that are familiar to many and easy to sing, with links to online recordings. If you have any

questions about using these resources, please contact Pastor Coffey ([email protected]).

Time After Pentecost

The church season after the Easter/Pentecost celebrations makes up half of the church year, yet it has no real name. Called “Time after Pentecost” or “Ordinary Time” because of the numbering (ordinals) of the Sundays, the primary color of the season is green, highlighting themes of growth in faith and discipleship, so the name “Green Season” is appropriate. It includes the distinct natural seasons of summer and fall, which have different themes emphasized. At First English, we strive to use language for God, Christ, and humanity that is inclusive and diverse. Our use of masculine, feminine, and non-gender names and metaphors for God, both biblical and contemporary, helps us to know God more fully. Languages that include persons of all gender identities and sexualities, ethnicities, and color, helps us better reflect God’s inclusive love for all.

Devotional Prayers This Week

Morning: Holy God, the new day begins with

such promise. Help me to enter into this day

with joy and confidence in your power and

goodness. Whatever challenge I may face,

help me to trust in your presence,

remembering that you are stronger than any

difficulty or threat. If you will surround me in

the embrace and affection of steadfast love

and faithfulness, of righteousness and

peace, then I will be lifted up and

strengthened to follow you. In Christ’s

name, I pray. Amen.

Evening: Gracious God, favor me with the

sheer silence of your presence at the end of

this day. Quiet any voices of fear and doubt

that would trouble me, toss and turn me.

Grant me, and anyone who enters the night

hours with anxiety or pain, your perfect

peace. Favor your children with calm, with

healing and renewal, when we sleep and

dream in your arms of mercy. In your Son’s

dear name, I pray. Amen.
