Who's There for Me? There are points in life when everyone faces periods of crisis, transition or difficulty. During these times we all receive great benefits from a caring relationship with someone who will faithfully and confidentially listen, empathize, pray and encourage us with Christ’s love and care.Caring for people in need is at the heart of the Stephen Ministry. With the accompaniment of a Stephen Minister, people no longer have to go through a difficult time alone. Instead they have a well-trained, caring Christian friend who will walk alongside them for as long as necessary, providing emotional and spiritual support. If you or someone you know need this support, please call our confidential phone line, 310-545-8244.

Stewardship . . . moving us closer to God

Today, the Fourth Sunday of Lent is called Laetare Sunday. Many of us may have lost track of the fact that Latin is still the official language of the Church. On occasion Latin reasserts itself. This Sunday is one of those times as Laetare means “Rejoice” in Latin. The entrance antiphon to the Mass begins Laetare, Jerusalem (“Rejoice, Jerusalem!”) The actual midpoint of Lent occurred this past Thursday, and this day has traditionally been viewed as a day of celebration, when we sort of lessen the soberness normally attached to Lent.Today's second reading from Ephesians and our Gospel from St. John remind us about God's great love for us. The reading from John includes the verse “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish, but might have eternal life.” (John 3:16) There are more than 30,000 verses in the Bible as we know it, but this particular verse has been held as the most succinct declaration of the entire Gospel message. Because of its brevity and power, it is worthy of a closer look. “God so loved the world…” This includes all of us, the entire world; it does not limit this love to a particular group or location. “"He gave…” That is what God does; He gives and We are the recipients. A key tenet of Stewardship is accepting that what we have is a gift from God and we should strive to share what we have received with others.“…so that everyone believes.” This is much more than an intellectual conviction. It means to trust in God, to rely on God, and to cling to God in many ways. That is also at the basis of a stewardship way of life. We respond to God by becoming disciples and placing our total trust in Him.“…might have eternal life.” The concept of eternity is beyond our ability to comprehend. This is much more than living forever; it means living with God, in His glory forever. That is what we all strive for; that is why we do what we do always, not just during this Lent.

The meaning of John 3:16 is another reason to rejoice this Sunday.

Please contact us at S t e w a r d s h i p @ A m e r i c a n M a r t y r s. o r g , with questions or comments about Stewardship.

"A New Way to Be Church: Parish Renewal

a la Pope Francis"Jack Jezreel

March 157:00pm, St. Kateri Room

The topic of the presentation has to do with Pope Francis, the "Pope for the Poor," inviting Catholic communities to rethink the way that parishes understand their purpose, structure, and mission. The hope of Pope Francis, echoing the story of St. Francis, is to "rebuild" the church, not with bricks and mortar, but with compassion and mercy. Jack Jezreel will share Pope Francis' dream and offer some thoughts on how parishes might move forward with a very exciting future!Jack is the original author of JustFaith and founder of JustFaith Ministries, a writer, speaker and teacher, focusing on the links between faith and compassion and a parish renewal strategy that draws from Pope Francis’ emphasis on “missionary disciples.” Over the last 15 years, he has given hundreds of presentations, Keynote Addresses, continuing education for clergy and diocesan staff, and parish, regional and national convenings, and was Keynote Speaker at the 2011 Religious Ed Congress.

Faith ForMation

SiLent Meditation - the prayer oF the heart During the Fridays of Lent join us for 30 minutes of Silent Meditation and contemplate the merciful love of the Father. God wants us to come to him with our joys and sorrows.

To let him shine his light into our darkness. To let him love us and make us whole. To lay down at the foot of the cross all that he wishes to transform in our lives so that we are prepared for the cross of Good Friday, and the resurrection of new life with and through Jesus.

Meditation is simply being still and silent in the loving presence of God. Simple, yes. Easy, no. We are not used to inaction and interior quiet. In this world of constant information, and doing instead of being, we need to create sacred space within our day and within our heart to be quiet in the Lord. It is in the silence that we come to know his love for us.Merciful Jesus, I Trust in You.Join us Friday mornings in St. Joseph’s Chapel at the Spirituality Center (use Pacific Ave. entrance). All are welcome!

Each of us longs for belonging. Our basic search is what drives our lives. Jesus very clearly, in simple terms defines belonging, invites us to him and shows us the way. Please join us for two 20-minute periods of silent prayer, closing with “Our Father.” The intent of this retreat is to provide a thorough, personal examination of consciousness in one’s own time, with the structured support of a weekly prayer group, leading to a deeper commitment to Christ within and beyond our faith community. At the close of the hour, there will be handouts with reflection questions and brief instructions for our personal/at home examination of consciousness. Newcomers are always welcome. Join us once, often or always for the Love of it! MinistRy ContaCt: Donna Ennis 310-941-1349

Dive-In SessionMonday, March 12 7:30-9:00Pm, St. KateriRev. alexei smith: Commemorating the Reformation during this 500th Anniversary YearWe will examine the causes of the Reformation and where Catholics and Lutherans are today in the journey towards Christian unity.

RCIA Rituals at MassAs a community we journey with the adults who are seeking to join our Catholic Church. During Mass we pray with the Elect and Candidates, and witness the rites that lead up to and include Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. As the Elect continue their journey towards Baptism at the Easter Vigil, and the Candidates for full reception, also at the Easter Vigil, there are three rituals of the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) celebrated at three of our liturgies. Next weekend we will celebrate our 3rd Scrutiny. The scrutinies are celebrated on the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Sundays of Lent. During these rituals, those preparing for entrance into the Church are led through prayerful reflections designed to help them grow in holiness. Our Elect and Candidates will be prayed over by the Presider, Deacon, and their sponsors.

Your role, as their parish community, is to join in the praying, with the hope that our entire community will be renewed in these celebrations.

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN You can help children know they are understoodAs parents, educators and volunteers, we want children to know that we are not only authority figures in their lives, but also people they can trust. To foster authentic trust with children, it is important that they know that you understand them. One of the simplest ways to do this is by repeating back what children are telling you. When you do this, you are affirming to the child that they are heard and understood.
