after MolièreDirected by Gemma Bodinetz

How to lose friends and infuriate people!

Disgusted with French society, where powdered fops gossip in code and be-jewelled coquettes whisper behind fans, poet Alceste embarks on a one-man crusade against fakery, frippery and forked tongues.

But could the woman he adores be the worst culprit of them all? And in this rarefied world will his revolution prove merely revolting…?

Following the huge success of Tartuffe and The Hypochondriac, The Misanthrope reunites the dream team of Molière, McGough and Bodinetz for this mockery of manners and morals set amid 17th century French aristocracy.

The Misanthrope will tour the UK with English Touring Theatre in Spring 2013.

Cast includes: Neil Caple, Simon Coates, George Potts and Colin Tierney

Returning from 2012 Edinburgh Fringe Festival with two esteemed awards, Mark explores his complex relationship with his father. It is about love, death and the search for peace in an imperfect world... with some gags thrown in for luck and told by one of the finest storytellers in the country.

FRI 1 FEB

Hilarious and surreal, he is a poet of many voices. Menace and melancholy there may be, but with plenty of McGough’s wit and wordplay too.

President of the Poetry Society Roger was awarded his O.B.E. for services to poetry in 1997 and more recently a C.B.E. His sparklingly witty ‘McGoughière’ adaptions of Molière comedies, Tartuffe and The Hypochondriac, have produced hugely successful UK tours. These will be followed by The Misanthrope, opening mid-February at the Playhouse. ‘The patron saint of poetry’Carol Ann Duffy

“A National Institution... the 42nd Best Reason to Love Britain “ (Sunday Telegraph) is back on the road after a longish absence.

Following sold-out Everyman shows Beyond Our Kennel and The Minor Tour, ‘Sheffield’s finest comedy synthesizer and twaddle-talker’ makes a welcome visit to the Playhouse. This time he ventures beyond the garden gate to tread the mean streets of Britain. Which is better: city life or country living? Supermarket or village shop? Or is it better to sit in your shed and count the cobwebs?

Following the success of 2012’s Crossing Points, Phoenix Dance Theatre return to the Playhouse with their latest exhilarating mixed programme.

Set to a specially commissioned score, Phoenix Artistic Director Sharon Watson’s latest work uses movement to unravel our genetic code, taking the audience on a volatile journey through the fascinating world of DNA.

Specialising in explosive, powerful dance, Douglas Thorpe’s newest piece for the company is a blistering duet that features his trademark raw, visceral choreography. Temujin by Jose Agudo is a ferocious solo inspired by the fearsome Mongol warlord Ghengis Kahn that fills the stage with physical dance.

Completing the bill is All Alight, celebrated choreographer Richard Alston’s first work for Phoenix. Featuring the full company, this elegant piece is danced to Ravel’s moving Sonata for Violin and Cello.

A poor duckling is lonely and fed-up, shunned by those around her who see her as too ugly to fit in. Follow the duckling on her journey as she overcomes her troubles and turns into a beautiful swan, beginning a happy new life.

Retelling the famous Hans Christian Anderson fairytale, Northern Ballet’s Ugly Duckling is the perfect opportunity to introduce your little ones to the magic of live ballet, music and theatre.

Choreographed by Northern Ballet dancers Dreda Blow and Sebastian Loe.

UK PREMIERE

“I Was A Rat!” insists a scruffy page boy who turns up one evening on the doorstep of old married couple Bob and Joan. But what is he now? A terrifying monster rampaging in the sewers? A money-spinning fairground freak? A champion wriggler and a downy card? Or just an ordinary boy, though a little ratty in his habits?

Philip Pullman’s glorious and gripping story is brought to life on the professional stage for the first time in the UK. Combining humour, fantasy, and adventure this moving and darkly comic tale slowly reveals its connection to one of the most famous fairy tales of all time.

Full of music, fantastic physical performances and unforgettable images I Was A Rat! will surprise, delight and move audiences of all ages.

A DAYIN THE DEATH OF JOE EGG

BY PETER NICHOLSDIRECTED BY STEPHEN UNWIN

10

“If you don’t laugh, you’ll cry.”

Bri is a school teacher. His wife, Sheila, loves amateur dramatics. But their daughter Josephine is more than they bargained for and life is getting difficult…

This fast-paced black comedy blazes with the love and pain, the anger and strain of a young couple raising a disabled child. Highly theatrical, frequently heart wrenching and often very funny, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg (1967) is one of the great plays of the modern British theatre.

Peter Nichols is amongst Britain’s most successful playwrights. His many successes include The National Health (1969), Privates on Parade (1977), Born in the Gardens (1970) and Passion Play (1981).

Into my heart an air that killsFrom yon far country blows:What are those blue remembered hills,What spires, what farms are those?AE Housman

The story of seven children one wartime summer, whose hilarious games, complex friendships and moral dilemmas lead them headlong into sudden and unexpected tragedy.

Dennis Potter’s charming and profound play captures his expansive humanity, his wicked humour and his fierce intolerance of ordinary cruelty.

Almost twenty years after his early death, Dennis Potter speaks to our fractious, changing world with a simple but powerful rhetoric about personal responsibility. He takes us to a world of dappled sunshine and long, playful afternoons to remind us that no-one is ever truly innocent.

Moving, funny and unforgettable.

Your father is a control freak. The family business is a millstone round your neck.Home feels like a prison. And yet you have dreams...

John Rutherford is a tyrannical patriarch, blind to the hopes and feelings of his family. The success of the family-owned glassworks, Rutherford & Son, takes precedence over everything… even happiness.

This powerful drama is an unflinching portrayal of an Edwardian family on the brink of collapse. Ranked by the National Theatre as one of the Top One Hundred Plays of the Century, there are few dramas as deeply human, uncompromising and immediately rewarding as this.

Northern Broadsides, brings its trademark gritty, no nonsense performance style to this play, directed by Sir Jonathan Miller with Barrie Rutter as John Rutherford.

On Hope Street, we are hard at work creating a beautiful new incarnation of the Everyman. The new building will feature the Everyman’s trademark three-sided theatre and basement Bistro, with many new features such as a pavement café; a special space for young people and community groups; a work-space for writers, a rehearsal room and workshops. It will be very accessible, kind to the planet, and more welcoming to more people than it could ever be before.

If you’ve visited Hope Street recently, you’ll know that the new Everyman is rising rapidly above the building site hoardings. Inside, our construction teams are hard at work laying bricks, installing cables, and otherwise putting the flesh on the new Everyman’s sturdy bones.

An EVERyMAN FOR EVERYONE

Portrait WallThe front of the new theatre will feature 105 shutters, featuring full-size portraits of 105 people of Liverpool. Over several months, we photographed hundreds of people, ranging from young children to theatre-going veterans, jugglers, cricketers, expectant mothers and whole families from all walks of life. The finished Portrait Wall will express the fact that this will truly be an Everyman for Everyone.

Our website features a live video webcam watching the building site 24 hours a day; regular news, blogs and updates; design plans, photos and videos.

“The Everyman provided me and many others with the courage to follow our dreams and pursue a career in the theatre. Now it can do the same for a whole new generation and act as a creative heart in the city.”

DAVID MORRISSEY

We have now raised over 98% of the funding for the new theatre, bringing over £25m of investment into the city from Arts Council Lottery Funds, the European Regional Development Fund and from trusts and foundations.

Now we need your help to close the final funding gap. We are appealing to everyone who loves the Everyman to help in whatever way you can to make the new Everyman, and everything that happens inside it, the best it can be.

Importantly, this appeal is not only for the building: it will make it possible to establish a Talent Fund which we will invest in new plays and new talent in the coming years. Many people have already responded to this appeal, joining us on the journey and becoming an integral part of the Everyman’s future. We would like to say ‘thank you’ to each and every one of them and invite others to come aboard.

Together we can create a new world of possibility for brave and brilliant theatre in Liverpool.

Everyone for the Everyman

At the heart of the Everyman will be the 400-seat wraparound auditorium, providing the intimate yet epic environment that has become this theatre’s trademark.

The new seats have been specially designed for the Everyman. Replacing the cinema seats and hard benches of old, every one of the seats in the new theatre will offer the same level of comfort and will be covered in a rich velvet to give the theatre a warm and welcoming glow.

We are offering a chance to Name A Seat in the new theatre, in return for a donation of £500 or above, which can be paid in installments or as a single gift.

Your seat dedication could be a gift for someone special, a memorial for a loved one or to celebrate your own relationship with the Everyman. You will also be among the first to step inside the new theatre and have priority booking for the opening season.
