This season the city and region is alive with a host of events, festivals and activities that are sure to guarantee a memorable visit.

Every week there is another festival or huge event, celebrating everything from the city’s waterfront to its African culture.

During your stay this issue of the visitor guide will help you to navigate your way around the city and be a one-stop shop to help get the most out of your visit.

There is a rich vein of visual art this summer, led by Liverpool Biennial, which will transform the city between July and October, and Tate

Liverpool’s Francis Bacon: Invisible Rooms from May onwards.

Music is everywhere too. The festival season kicks off with Sound City, before the likes of LIMF, Africa Oye and ultimately Liverpool Psych Fest in September.

But of course, it’s not just the one-off events that make the city shine. When the sun is out everywhere is buzzing, there are loads of outside areas to eat and drink and the city looks at its most spectacular. We look forward to welcoming you!

ART

It’s precarious talking about art in Liverpool; due to its constantly-evolving offer, you will always look a bit behind the times.

2016 is a good example of this, both inside and outside of galleries. From 9th July to 16th October, the ninth edition of Liverpool Biennial, the UK’s largest contemporary arts festival, will completely transform the city when it takes place across galleries, disused buildings, pubs and public spaces. It brings 40 international artists to deliver new works responding to the city, and is organised along the idea of episodes. For the first time there is a dedicated children’s element, designed in collaboration with local schoolchildren and making the festival even more accessible to younger audiences.

Tate Liverpool has had a string of critical successes recently, with exhibitions from Warhol, Pollock, Chagall and Picasso wowing critics as well as proving popular with audiences. The

streak looks set to continue this summer, when the gallery welcomes Francis Bacon: Invisible Rooms from 18th May to 18th September. And if that wasn’t enough, the permanent collection brings an eclectic range of modern art together from the extensive Tate collection.

Also on the Waterfront, Open Eye Gallery is one of the country’s leading photography spaces with globally-renowned artists exhibiting throughout the year. Elsewhere in the city, FACT is the natural home for bold new exhibitions exploring digital and contemporary issues, as well as housing four cinema screens.

But it’s not all about the contemporary; the stunning Walker Art Gallery on William Brown Street houses an incredible collection of paintings, sculpture and decorative arts spanning over six hundred years, including works by Hockney, Degas, Turner and Rembrandt.

The Bluecoat is a cutting edge arts centre housed

in a 300-year-old building, offering a programme of art, literature, music and dance, and is also home to a wide range of artists and creative businesses.

MUSEUMS

Liverpool has one of the most impressive collections of museums in the country. Start with Museum of Liverpool, opened in 2011 in a landmark Waterfront building. In it, visitors can explore how Liverpool’s port, its people and its creative, industrial and sporting history have shaped the city and get a better understanding of what makes Liverpool.

Just along the Waterfront around the Albert Dock, there is the Merseyside Maritime Museum, where you can find out all about the companies, people and ships connected to this port city. In the same building is the International Slavery Museum, which gives an unflinching account of the slave trade and the city’s role in it.

Then there is World Museum, in the St. George’s Quarter of the city, in which visitors can explore the natural world, ancient civilizations and even make a journey into space through the planetarium.

DRAMA AND COMEDY

Liverpool is often considered a city of storytelling, and nowhere is that more clear than in its performance spaces. 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, and this year there will be lots of shows and events paying tribute to the bard.

The legendary Everyman and Playhouse theatres are responsible for launching the career of many celebrated actors including Bill Nighy, Julie Walters and the late, great Pete Postlethwaite. Both offer an eclectic programme of home-grown and touring theatre, and frequently stage world premieres.

The Empire is the largest theatre in Liverpool and stages the big musicals and spectacular shows, often straight from the West End.

The Royal Court offers a range of long-running plays and one-off nights, and the Epstein Theatre is Grade II listed with a striking interior and hosts entertainment of all kinds.

Smaller theatres such as the Lantern Theatre and Unity Theatre are no less innovative and showcase local, national and international talent in a more intimate setting.

The hundred-year-old Floral Pavilion in New Brighton, Wirral, and Southport Theatre and Convention Centre both have varied programmes of theatre, family shows, comedy and music.

Many bars, clubs and theatres host regular comedy nights such as Comedy Central Comedy Club at Blue Bar & Grill, Laughterhouse at The Slaughter House and The Liverpool Comedy Cellar. Indeed, there is a whole Liverpool Comedy Festival at various venues this September and October.

Then there is the Echo Arena – in addition to music superstars it hosts all the big names of comedy, such as Jack Whitehall, Russell Howard and Miranda Hart.

HERITAGE

Like the Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal, Liverpool is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take a walk around Albert Dock, the largest collection of Grade I listed buildings in the country, and an absolute must-see. The Dock is an integral part of the fabric of the city and dates back to 1840, but it is far from just part of the heritage site. It is home to bars, restaurants, museums and some

of Liverpool’s most popular visitor attractions.

Liverpool’s buildings tell the story of the city. Liverpool has some of the best examples of neoclassical architecture in the world, most notably the magnificent St George’s Hall. Visit Central Library to see how the original Picton Library has been skilfully meshed with a modern design, and stroll down Hope Street to see both of Liverpool’s famous cathedrals, the soaring neo-gothic Anglican Cathedral (the largest in the UK) and the modernist Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King with its glorious stained glass windows.

Visit the Waterfront to admire the Three Graces – the Cunard Building, Port of Liverpool Building and of course the Liver Building, with its two Liver Birds, the symbols of the city, perching 300 feet above the streets below.

Take a RIBA tour to learn more about Liverpool’s architecture. The city also has a variety of fully qualified Blue and Green Badge guides who offer services from individual walking tours to large coach tours. There is a huge selection of special interest tours too such as photography, ghost tours, comedy tours and of course, the Fab Four.

MUSIC IS EVERYWHERE IN THE CITY. LIVERPOOL HAS A PROUD HISTORY AS THE BIRTHPLACE OF THE BEATLES AND IS HOME TO MORE NUMBER ONE HITS THAN ANY OTHER CITY. COMBINED WITH ITS DYNAMIC MUSIC SCENES AND FLOURISHING FESTIVALS, IT IS NO WONDER LIVERPOOL HAS BEEN DECLARED A UNESCO CITY OF MUSIC.

Music

Liverpool is where it all started with the band that shook the world – The Beatles. Nowhere else can you experience how ‘four lads from Liverpool’ played such an important role on music than in the attractions and venues where the story began.

An absolute must see is the Beatles Story at Albert Dock, a brilliant tour through The Beatles’ lives, with fascinating memorabilia and insights from friends and family. A new addition for this summer is the Pattie Boyd exhibition, showing never-before-seen photos and memorabilia from the woman who was married to George Harrison and, later, Eric Clapton. And opening in July at Cunard Building, The Jam – About

the Young Idea is a new interactive exhibition charting the rise and influence of The Jam - one of the most important British bands of the last forty years.

The most famous club in the world, The Cavern Club on Mathew Street, is very much alive and kicking. Stop off for a drink, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the live music. From Mathew Street, Fab Four fans should take a Magical Mystery Tour through Strawberry Field, Penny Lane and other important Beatle locations, or visit Mendips and 20 Forthlin Road, the childhood homes of John Lennon and Sir Paul McCartney.

Liverpool is renowned for its musical influence and it is one of the reasons UNESCO awarded Liverpool City of Music status - an appropriate accolade for a city which lives and breathes music. The city is among one of 19 global Cities of Music, and visiting Liverpool will not only give you some incredible experiences, but will reignite your love for music, no matter what style or genre.

Liverpool’s urban festivals like Liverpool International Music Festival (LIMF), Liverpool Sound City and Liverpool Psych Fest have not only cemented the city as a haven for music, but also helped to develop new music scenes. Supported by festivals such as Africa Oyé and Brazilica, the city embraces and celebrates music from around the world.

With established events and venues throughout the city region such as the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) and the Echo Arena, a list of previous performances in the city reads like a veritable A-Z of music superstardom. What can be said is from global acts to new bands on the scene, performers and visitors alike will appreciate

the fervent reception from Liverpool audiences – it’s well-renowned as one of the best crowds around.

Classical fans should visit the Royal Philharmonic Hall and take in a performance by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, led by the charismatic chief conductor Vasily Petenko. Located on Hope Street, the Philharmonic Hall is situated half way between our two Cathedrals, where again as venues, you can experience some exhilarating and surprising musical performances, as well as the odd hymn or two.

So whether you’re looking for folk music or acid jazz, club beats or classical, you will find a host of unique, warm and welcoming venues allowing you to experience the best music, within a city which helped shape the world. Enjoy every beat.

When Rough Guides were compiling their travel bucket list last year, they chose places of wonder; places that change your life and you never forget.

The Grand Canyon topped the list. The Great Wall of China was fourth. Wedged between them in third place, a night out in Liverpool made the grade. And it’s not hard to see why.

Seel Street and the area around it have undergone a major transformation in the past decade or so, to the point that it is now a go-to for nightlife. No matter what you’re looking for, you’ll find it here. Glamour and Latin dancers in a former Polish church: Alma de Cuba. Hawaii’an-themed cocktail bar: Aloha. Traditional pub with top-notch food: The Monro. Hot dogs, steins and a bar with a secret code: Salt Dog Slims. Bar with the city’s coolest soundtrack: Motel. This is without even mentioning Santa Chupitos, Almost Famous or Empire. And of course, if you’re staying out until the bitter end, The Peacock and Heebie Jeebies are always good for a dance.

There are also traditional pubs on virtually every street corner, where the welcome will be warm and the beer just the right temperature. Try Thomas Rigby’s on Dale Street, one of Liverpool’s oldest pubs that offers a range of 40+ world beers and eight cask conditioned ales, or head for The Ship & Mitre for premium Belgian and German beers. Ye Hole in Ye Wall is a really traditional hostelry, as well as Liverpool’s reputedly oldest pub, offering heaps of atmosphere, great beer and lots of old photos of the city and for something different The Belvedere is a must-visit.

The Baltic Triangle is the hippest area of the city,

and has seen a sea-change in recent years. Camp and Furnace is the obvious place to start. The truly unique space houses everything from a bar packed with international beers to Eurovision parties, Scandinavian festivals, Biennial installations and weekly food slams. It’s perfectly complemented just around the corner by the Baltic Social, on the ground floor of Elevator Studios and offering a more intimate setting than its neighbour.

It’s also home to many of the city’s most exciting club nights. The Liverpool clubbing scene took off with the legendary Cream in the nineties and has been bouncing ever since. It’s an ever-changing scene with nights popping up all the time, anchored by established names like Garlands, the ultimate nightclub for party people.

AS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL FOOTBALLING CITY IN THE UK, HOME TO ONE OF THE LARGEST HORSE RACES IN THE WORLD AND TWO ROYAL LINKS GOLF COURSES, THE LIVERPOOL CITY REGION IS A MUST VISIT FOR ANY SPORT FAN.

If you travel to any city around the world and mention Liverpool, people will start talking about football.

Liverpool Football Club has one of the largest trophy cabinets in the global game, with an impressive 18 league titles, five European Cups and seven FA Cups. Following the final completion of the stadium expansion, the Liverpool F.C. Stadium Tour and Museum is a must-see for all football fans, and the Boot Room sports café is a perfect place for lunch or dinner.

Liverpool has two football teams and as a founding member of the football League, Everton has always been at the forefront of English football. Founded in 1878, Everton’s cabinet contains nine league titles, five FA Cups and a European Cup Winners’

Cup. Everton’s stadium, Goodison Park, gives you an insight into its truly unique history - as the oldest purpose-built football stadium in the world, Everton were the first club to play with goal nets and corner flags and the only club in England to host a World Cup semi-final. Steeped in history, Everton F.C. should be on the bucket list for any sports fan.

Liverpool City Region is home to lots of renowned links golf courses, including two Royal courses that host the Open Championship – the next time will be when Royal Birkdale welcomes the Claret Jug in 2017. The world’s finest players will hope to follow in the footsteps of the last two winners in the city region – Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods.

The Grand National Festival takes place annually at Aintree, attracting a global audience of more than 600 million. It’s not all about that weekend in April though; with both Aintree and Haydock race courses offering various high-quality meetings throughout the year, Liverpool provides a perfect location for those interested in horse racing.

It also plays host to some of the best Rugby League clubs, with St. Helens and Widnes Vikings playing in front of capacity crowds through the season. Later in the year Anfield, home of Liverpool Football Club, will host the final of the RFL Four

Nations Tournament on 20th November 2016.

Whether it’s watching elite athletes at the GB Gymnastics Championships, which takes place at the Echo Arena in July 2016 or seeing some of the former world tennis greats play alongside the stars of tomorrow at the Liverpool Hope University International Tennis Tournament, there are some incredible sports events happening in Liverpool.

There are even opportunities to get involved yourself. The Mersey Tunnel 10k Run takes place in the city on 19 June, before the Westfield Health British Transplant Games come to the city in late July – with events you can enter whether you are a transplant recipient or not.

Finally, an exciting new entry to the British sporting calendar is the Liverpool International Horse Show, which will return to the Echo Arena on 31st December to 2nd January. What better way to celebrate the new year then experiencing a spectacular event of sport, music and drama?

If you have a passion for sport - whether that be football, gymnastics, running or horse racing – Liverpool is a city region in which to watch, experience and participate.

Explore

SHOULD YOU WISH TO ESCAPE FROM THE BRIGHT LIGHTS OF LIVERPOOL CITY CENTRE, THERE ARE LOTS OF BEACHES AND COASTAL WALKS NEARBY, PLUS STUNNING COUNTRYSIDE SPACES WHERE YOU CAN BLOW AWAY THE COBWEBS.

Head across the River Mersey to Wirral for a trip to the historic village of Port Sunlight with its late 19th century cottages. The story of how it was built by the Lever brothers for the workers at their Sunlight soap factory and wonderfully preserved is told in full at the Port Sunlight Museum. The Lady Lever Art Gallery, built for William Lever’s art-loving wife and now open to the public, boasts a magnificent collection spanning centuries and has recently undergone renovation to restore its original grandeur.

New Brighton is a rejuvenated seaside resort, with the Floral Pavilion Theatre at its heart plus plenty of family-friendly activities. Nearby you can go on one of Wirral’s fantastic walks, such as striding out to Hilbre Island or traversing the Wirral Way. For a shorter stroll there is Birkenhead Park, acknowledged to be the first publicly funded park in Britain and a model for Central Park in New York.

Liverpool has more parks than Paris; Calderstones, Croxteth and Sefton Park are just a few favourites. Head to Sefton Park to see the beautiful glass-panelled Victorian Palm House.

Further afield, Crosby Beach is a must-see, not only for its beautiful views but for Antony Gormley‘s Another Place; 100 cast-iron, life-size figures spread out along three kilometres of the shore and out to sea.

In Southport, breathe in the refreshing sea air as you stroll along Southport Pier, enjoy a picnic in Southport’s Botanic Gardens, and embrace the traditional amusements of a grand seaside town. Close by, explore the sand dunes along the Sefton coast and try and spot a rare red squirrel at Formby Nature Reserve.

Knowsley Safari Park is well worth a visit – with over 700 exotic animals, amusement rides and a fantastic sea lion show, only eight miles from the city centre and in the parklands of the stunning Knowsley Hall.

Chester Zoo is also a great day out for the family with some of the most endangered and exotic species in the world.

Liverpool Waterfront

The best place to start is Albert Dock, a collection of Grade 1 listed red brick former warehouses on the banks of the River Mersey, which date back to the 1840s. While the architecture of its industrial past is retained, today it is home to museums and galleries as well as a wide range of bars and restaurants.

One of the biggest names in the Dock is Tate Liverpool, the home of modern art in the north. In addition to a host of big name exhibitions – Sir Francis Bacon this summer follows recent successes such as Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock and Marc Chagall – there is a permanent collection of diverse works from the vast Tate collection.

The Beatles Story is a must-see whether you’re a fab four fanatic or not. The interactive museum follows the history of four lads who changed the world, from their early days of playing village halls in suburban Liverpool to the period of

Beatlemania, their later experimental work and subsequent solo careers. With rooms themed around the plane they first flew to the US on, the Yellow Submarine and John Lennon’s Imagine it’s a truly immersive experience.

Liverpool has more national museums and galleries than any other UK city region outside London, several of which are on the waterfront. Merseyside Maritime Museum charts the city’s maritime history through exhibitions on ships such as Titanic and Lusitania, and the International Slavery museum, in the same building, is an unflinching examination of the history of the slave trade and the city’s role in it. Then there is the Museum of Liverpool, a landmark building linking the waterfront together which tells the story of the city, its people and its passions.

The ferry ‘cross the Mersey is far from just the inspiration of a famous Merseybeat song. Visitors

can follow the route that has been sailing since the 13th Century, with several River Explorer cruises every day offering a perfect photo opportunity, an interactive history lesson and a relaxing voyage rolled into one. Since 2015, one of the ferries has been painted in a special ‘dazzle’ pattern by Sir Peter Blake, the famous pop artist who also designed the album cover for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. And if you want to see what’s underneath the river, there are also guided tours of the Mersey Tunnel!

As well as its cultural attractions, there are restaurants and cafes to suit every taste, as well as stunning hotels which have seamlessly integrated into the waterfront such as Malmaison, Jury’s Inn and Titanic Hotel. All of which makes it a destination in itself, before you even venture inland!

Unsurprisingly, the city is now a top five UK shopping destination.

Liverpool ONE, right in the heart of the city, is the huge open-air shopping district that is home to more than 160 famous high street and designer names, from John Lewis to Hugo Boss, Michael Kors and the only Beauty Bazaar Harvey Nichols in the country.

Liverpool’s independent scene is buzzing, and Bold Street is probably the best place to start. Utility is one of Liverpool’s retail success stories, a small shop which sells unusual furniture, stationery and accessories and has got a wide and loyal following. Just over the street from there is Matta’s, an iconic shop bringing obscure flavours from

around the world to the city. Add to this the likes of Transalpino, a mecca for rare trainers collectors, Dig Vinyl and Soho Vintage and you have a thriving mini-city of independent businesses.

The exclusive Metquarter is the place to find select fashion and beauty outlets such as Gieves & Hawkes, MAC and Armani Exchange.

Don’t miss the ultra-fashionable Cavern Walks, home to the Vivienne Westwood store and famed designer boutique Cricket.

The Bluecoat is a charming Grade I listed arts centre in the heart of the city which also houses a range of small shops selling all sorts of lovely contemporary crafts, eclectic homewares and funky fashion.

The city centre area has over 400 shops and includes Church Street, home to megastores such as Marks and Spencer and Forever 21. It also incorporates two theatres, numerous restaurants and bars and a fun-packed annual programme of events.

Shopping outside the city centre has much to offer too. Lark Lane, south of the city centre, is full of bohemian boutiques and street markets. Lord Street in Southport is an elegant parade of Victorian arcades with a whole host of smart shops. In Wirral, try West Kirby for boutique shopping, or the local farmers’ markets and farm shops for delicious local produce.

King’s Dock, Liverpool L3 4FP – T: 0151 945 1000 – E: [email protected]

LIVERPOOL IS KNOWN GLOBALLY FOR ITS CLOSE LINKS WITH THE SEA. IT IS A CITY WITH A RICH MARITIME HISTORY, AND THE WATER PLAYS A HUGE ROLE IN LIVERPOOL LIFE TO THIS DAY.

The iconic waterfront is the defining image of the city and getting the ‘ferry ‘cross the Mersey’ is a must for all visitors – especially now it has been given a special dazzle design by Sir Peter Blake. While freight ships are still a regular sight on the river, these days they are joined by something a little more luxurious.

Liverpool Cruise Terminal welcomes cruise ships from around the world into that famous waterfront, which is a key part of Liverpool’s status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The welcome is so renowned that it is currently Seatrade’s ‘destination of the year’.

Liverpool has a proud history of cruises, as seen in 2015 when Cunard celebrated its 175th anniversary in its spiritual home. More than a million spectators lined the banks of the Mersey to see the historic meeting of Three Queens – Queen Victoria, Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth. In 2016, Queen

Cruise

36 Tourist information 0151 233 2008

Elizabeth will return to the shore on 2nd July to join in the centenary celebrations of the Cunard building.

However, it’s not all about Cunard - 50 ships berthed last year, bringing over 80,000 passengers and the 2016 schedule is on course to be even bigger with returning ships and a number of new arrivals. Ships are welcomed right into the heart of the waterfront, in the shadow of the Three Graces – the Cunard Building, Port of Liverpool Building and the Royal Liver Building, atop which sit the city’s ‘guardians’, the Liver birds. These three buildings ensure a striking first impression of the city.

Just further along the waterfront is Albert Dock, a complex of dock buildings and warehouses first opened in 1846. Nowadays, they are home to a fantastic range of restaurants, cafes, bars, museums and clubs for every taste, from morning to late night.

There is also the outstanding Museum of Liverpool, a £72 million development which is the most visited museum outside of the capital.

DATES TO LOOK OUT FOR:

Sunday 12 June, Disney MagicSaturday 2 July, Queen Elizabeth Thursday 14 July, Azamara Quest Monday 18 July, Celebrity SilhouetteWednesday 27 July, Europa 2
