Staunch Shorthorn ad- vocates John and Carol Brownlie, Deepwater Farm- ing Company, Deepwater, Westmar bid the top money for e Grove L0443 (P), a 25-month- old, 975kg son of e Grove J0572 (P) with impeccable performance fig- ures which included a MSA B2 index value of $81 – the highest in the catalogue. Mr Brownlie said TG L0443 epitomised what a classic Shorthorn bull should look like and he was the most complete bull he had seen in a very long time. “He has a super smooth coat, tremendous muscling and backed by top notch, high indexing carcase fig- ures,” said Mr Brownlie. “We run 2500 Shorthorn breeders and intend to use L0443 over selected cows to breed bulls for our own use,” he added. Central Queensland com- mercial beef producer Clyde Hoffman and family, CN Hoffman, Marlborough was represented by his manager Paul Kipling who outlaid the $33,000 second top money for e Grove L0545 (P). e outstanding polled red son of Turanville Mittie- bah H132 boasted an MSA B2 index of $70, which places him in the top 5 per cent of the breed. Mr Kipling said TG L0545 excelled in all the carcase traits which he was looking to add to their commercial Brahman-based herd. “We have used e Grove bulls in the past and the re- sults we are getting from the progeny really warranted us returning,” Mr Kipling said. “L0545 was nearly three times the breed average for IMF percentage so he will really give us a kick in the quality of our carcases,” he added. Volume buyers included Campbell and Roz Brownlie, Brownlie Grazing Company, Condamine who bought five quality Shorthorn bulls for a $8667 average and the Yambah Propriotors, Yam- bah Station, Alice Springs secured a quality line of nine Shorthorn bulls for a $9167 average. West Australian client Marc Ross manages the Emanuel family’s Lanstal Pty Ltd, which operates prop- erties in the Pinjarra and Esperence districts running a 4000 strong pure Shorthorn commercial herd. Mr Ross bought 13 red Shorthorn bulls for a $8700 average which included e Grove L0260 (P), a high carcase indexing son of e Grove J0563 (P) for $10,000. He based his selections on conformation, positive rib and rump fat cover, good growth figures combined with low birth weight data and plenty of muscle expres- sion. Other bulk buyers were the Quinn family, Essex Grazing Company, Middlemount who selected seven bulls for a $10,430 average and paid up to $13,000 for e Grove L0743 (P), a quality son of e Grove J0598 (P) with balanced growth, carcase and raw data figures to add to their quality Charbray herd. e McIntyre family bought eight quality Durham Blacks for a $5750 average in- cluding the $9500 top-priced bull, e Grove L0630, a five/ eighth Angus Durham Black which weighed 960kgs at two years of age for their breed- ing operation at St George. Bulls were dispersed all over Queensland, Northern Territory, West Australia, Victoria and South Australia. Agents: Landmark and GDL.
