Docent Responsibilities!
Onboarding
• Provide contact informa4on to lead docent (name, email, phone, teacher’s name and grade) • Submit TB tes4ng paperwork • Meet with lead docent to go over any school specific informa4on
Beginning of Year • Review BCHD website for resources (training guidelines, food allergy protocol, etc.)
• Understand BCHD module objec4ves and messaging
• Schedule ALL lessons with teacher • Obtain class allergy list • Connect with any co-‐docents and discuss roles
Trainings/Before Lesson Delivery • Acend ALL trainings • Review BCHD website for resources • Confirm lessons with teacher two weeks in advance
• Ask teacher if there are any new allergies • Review lesson • Advise your lead docent of any schedule changes
Day of Lesson • Wear your LiveWell shirt
• Arrive 30 minutes early
• Gather lesson and supplies • Prep food ingredients – ALWAYS WEAR FOOD HANDLING GLOVES!
• Clean work area in classroom
• Set up visual aids and workbooks
Post Lesson • Take pictures of any reflec4on pages you would like to share and email to Program Manager
• Clean all work areas and wash dishes/food prep supplies
• Return all supplies including workbooks • Complete lesson tracking form

Mindful Practices !
Mindful Breathing • Use a calm, sog voice • Use the term “Mindful Bodies” • Ring the chime once at the beginning of the exercise • Direct the children to listen to their own breath • Allow 30 seconds for the mindful breathing exercise • Ring the chime again ager the 30 seconds is up to close out the exercise
Mindful Food TasQng • Start with mindful breathing
• Use all senses to interact with food • Never pressure a child to taste; use gentle encouragement
• It’s ok if they look, smell or touch the food but do not taste it

those that may have been hesitant at first
• Remind students to prac4ce gra4tude for the food sample and to be respecoul – NO GROSS – “Don’t yuck my yum!”

Food Allergy and Safety!
Food Allergy A serious medical condi4on affec4ng 1 in 13 children. The job of the body’s immune system is to iden4fy and destroy germs (such as bacteria or viruses) that make you sick. A food allergy results when the immune system mistakenly targets a harmless food protein – an allergen – as a threat and a<acks it.
Anaphylaxis • Anaphylaxis is an extreme, life threatening allergic reac4on to a specific allergen.
• Allergic symptoms can affect several areas of the body and may threaten breathing and blood circula4on.
• Ogen begins within minutes ager a person eats a problem food but symptoms may begin hours later.
Possible Symptom DescripQons • It feels like something is poking my tongue. • My tongue (or mouth) is 4ngling (or burning). • My tongue (or mouth) itches. • My tongue feels like there is hair on it. • My mouth feels funny. • There’s a frog in my throat; there’s something stuck in my
throat. • My tongue feels full (or heavy). • My lips feel 4ght. • It feels like there are bugs in there (to describe itchy ears).
Food Allergy Protocol • Be aware of classroom allergies and make
subs4tu4ons if necessary
• Families with allergies of food sample are welcome to bring a subs4tute for their child
• Always check ingredients before lesson • Follow BCHD Food Allergy Guidelines • Report any reac4ons immediately to Lead Docent and Program Manager

Food Safety and Handling • Keep food at proper temperature – if perishable
food will be siqng out for over an hour, bring cooler and cooler packs
• Wash hands, produce and equipment
• Pull hair back • Do not eat while preparing food • ALWAYS use food handling gloves

• Tell them you need to con4nue the lesson and ask they hold the ques4ons to the end

• Ask a teacher for support
