Grand CharactersGrandparents on TV shows

and in the movies are much likethose in real life: They dote ontheir grandchildren, providewisdom and share theirlove. Here are a few favoriteon-screen grands:

Esther and Zeb Walton,“The Waltons.” Grandma andGrandpa Walton, both strongand persevering, are the pillarsof their close-knit family of11 who live in rural Virginia.

Granny Moses, “The BeverlyHillbillies.” Feisty andopinionated, Jed Clampett’smother-in-law is “from the hills”but now lives in Beverly Hillswith her newly rich family.Granny still uses her folk wayswhen it comes to cooking, concocting homemade remediesand predicting the weather.

Adolph Kramer, “Heidi.” In thisclassic tale set in the Swiss Alps,a granddad with a gruff exteriorgrows to form a loving bondwith his lively granddaughterHeidi when she comes to livewith him.

Estelle Winslow, “FamilyMatters.” Despite her age,Mother Winslow is hip andtrendy. Protective of hergrandchildren, she’s theglue that binds this WindyCity family.

Clarisse Renaldi, “The PrincessDiaries.” Queen of a fictionalEuropean country, Clarissegrooms her teenage Americangranddaughter to take overthe throne.

What Is Mindfulness? The word “mindfulness” is

a frequent topic these days, whether on talk shows, inmagazine articles and even foradult coloring books. While itmay seem like a vague term, mindfulness is a fairly simpleconcept with many benefits.

Essentially, mindfulnessmeans being aware of yourthoughts, feelings, physicalsensations and environmentin the moment, rather thanthinking about the past orworrying about the future.

Practicing mindfulness iscredited with helping to reducestress and anxiety, cultivatecompassion, and buildrelationships. Studies revealphysical benefits, too, such asa stronger immune system, improved memory and sharpercognitive skills.

Observation is the key tomindfulness. Notice the sights, sounds and smells around you,and pay attention to sensationslike the warmth of the sunshineon your face or the flavor ofyour morning coffee. By adding“mindfulness moments” to yourdaily routine, you may soon feela deeper connection to bothyourself and the world.
