There has been a lot said about using the word “Easter” when referring to the celebration of Christ’s Passion Week, culminating in His resurrection. Perhaps some readers have no idea of this contro-versy and I hope I am not introducing any kind of doubt into their celebration. Words have meaning, but that meaning is dictated by the people using the words in question. For example if I said, “Pastor Jason tweeted the funniest thing yesterday,” ten years ago, those who heard me might be left scratching their heads. Perhaps, they would picture Jason whistling a joke to a group of crows at a bus stop; nevertheless, having said that sentence in today’s culture, no one is in any real doubt as to its meaning. The fact of the matter is we are swimming in culture, much like a fish swims in water. Every once in a while issues like the one at hand will come up and we notice the culture around us. (Imagine a fish noticing the water all around him. It was always there allowing him to function but never really being acknowledged.) There is debate as to the etymological root of the word “Easter.” Some say it is derived from Ēas-tre, a Babylonion fertility Goddess, worshipped in unmentionable ways, during the spring. This name, they say, was carried into anglo-german as “eostre monath” or the “month of Eostre”. They attest that this name was adopted by Christians to blend in with their culture. While Christian historians point out that English is a Romantic language, derived from German, and “Easter” is a cognate (a word that sounds the same in two different languages) with the German “ostorn”. Ost, in German, means the rising of the sun. Secondly, the German, “Auferstehung,” is an old German compound word. “Ester” meaning first, and “stehen” meaning to stand or rise has become the modern word for “erstehen,”or “resurrection” and most likely the source for the English word Easter. All that to say, regardless of the true origin of the word, we celebrate Christ’s death and resurrec-tion. He was indeed the first to rise, validating His claims and giving us hope of eternal life. Our culture has decided that Easter is the celebration of Jesus’ empty tomb. Let’s not bicker about what to call it, let’s be joyful in sharing this life-changing, eternity-changing news! Happy Easter… er… Resurrection Sunday.

The greatest among you shall be your servant. Matthew 23:11

Servanthood, it is in the very nature of what it means to be Christ-like. Jesus Himself said that the

greatest would be servants. Today, I want to write about some great men in our congregation.

Over the past couple of weeks a team of men have been working to construct a new sound booth in

the sanctuary. This was needed because the person running the sound board could not hear well in the old

sound booth. This in turn meant that the sound was not very good in the sanctuary because he had to rely

on a great amount of guessing in what he was doing. So the decision was made to move the sound board. A

plan was drafted and construction began.

During the course of this project, I saw many men come through the doors to

lend a helping hand. I will do my best to remember everyone who I saw, but I ask

you forgive me if I forget a name. Rich Andrews, Harry Austin, Jim Bebermeyer,

Ron Bennett, Steve Brooks, John Canada, Doug Denham, Denny Denham, Paul

Gerard, Pat Hoskins, and Mike Precht. It is because of your great efforts that the

new sound booth was working this past Sunday. Thank you!

Keeping with the theme of servanthood, I would be remiss if I did not ac-

knowledge our wonderful choir, Connie Kelley as our pianist, Jack Jansson as our

narrator, and all of our tech workers (Steve Brooks, Doug Denham, John Bivens,

Percy Buery, Paul Gerard and Matt Nelson) in their efforts with Two Crowns. We

were all blessed by your offerings of praise.

I pray everyone has a blessed Easter season. He Is Risen!
