This year 11 November marks the 97th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). Each year on this day Australians observe one minute’s silence at 11 am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.

A large gathering occurs each year at the Shrine of Remembrance, as well as services being held at memorials, RSL clubs and schools across the country.

To show your support, wear a poppy on Remembrance Day.

Versatile and oh-so-delicious, these traditional Belgian waffl es can be served up topped with just about anything your tastebuds desire. Versatile and oh-so-delicious, these traditional Belgian waffl es can be served up topped with just about anything your tastebuds desire.

Belgian Waffles

Ingredients

2 cups plain fl our3/4 cup sugar3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder2 eggs, separated1 1/2 cups milk1 cup butter, melted1 teaspoon vanilla extractwhipped creamfresh berriesicing sugar for dusting

Method

In a bowl, combine fl our, sugar and baking powder.

In separate bowl, lightly beat egg yolks. Add milk, butter and vanilla extract; mix well. Stir into dry ingredients just until combined.

Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form then fold into batter.

Bake in a preheated waffl e iron according to manufacturer’s directions until golden brown.

Serve with dollops of whipped cream or ice cream sprinkle with your choice of berries and dust with icing sugar.

Makes 10 (approx.)
