BECOME A KWINANA PIONEER

2018JUNE

INSIDE

OF KWINANA

Welcome to the winter edition of the Spirit of Kwinana. We have had a great few months at the City of Kwinana and I can’t believe we are almost into the second half of 2018 already!

The City has hosted a range of great events over the last quarter, with the most notable being the Alcoa Children’s Festival.

The “big day out” for children aged 0 to 12 saw more than 4,000 people flock to Calista Oval to enjoy interactive science, art, music and environmental activities. The City resolved to significantly revitalise and expand the Alcoa’s Children’s Festival by offering a wider variety of activities and entertainment for a broader age range. I am pleased to say that the community embraced the change and that the City delivered to the community by taking the annual children’s event to the next level.

In April, the pivotal role our City is playing in boosting the state’s economy was recognised in a special report by the Committee for Perth and the University of WA. The ‘Kwinana

as a Catalyst for Economic Development’ report highlighted the significant impact and the vast opportunities the Kwinana Industrial Area would create in terms of both state revenue and job creation with the development of the Outer Harbour. We’re excited about the possibilities for the state and the City of Kwinana and will continue to advocate for the outer harbor to be constructed in a timely manner.

The City was also recently recognised for the second consecutive year as a Gold Waterwise Council. This title recognises the City’s ongoing innovation and leadership in incorporating waterwise principles into its operations. We are proud to achieve recognition two years in a row by implementing a range of sustainable water initiatives in the Kwinana community.

With so much happening, I am excited to see what the second half of 2018 has in store for the City and am sure that we will see even more unique events, programs and activities being held for residents to enjoy. If you want to stay up-to-date with the latest news from the City of Kwinana, or to be the first to know about upcoming events within the City, please be sure to subscribe to our online newsletter or follow us on Facebook.

Carol Adams, Mayor

WENDY COOPER

An Elected Member for just over six years, Councillor Cooper finds the opportunity to answer the needs of community members extremely rewarding.

“During my time in Council I have established a close relationship with the resident’s association and through them have been able to develop close connections to the work and commitment of individual areas within the City,” she said.

“As the City continues to grow the challenges broaden.”

“It is a fulfilling role to be a part of a team to ensure that Council runs smoothly,” said Councillor Cooper.

When not engaged in Council, Councillor Cooper is spending her time as a member of the Rotary Club of Kwinana and the Kwinana Tennis Social Club, as well as volunteering for the newly named support organisation, Chorus.

SHEILA MILLS

Previously working as the Education and Information Officer in the WA Parliament for over 16 years, Councillor Mills became engaged with the wider community when she joined the organising committee for the Vote Kwinana campaign.

“I appreciate the strong sense of community in Kwinana which became profoundly evident through my work for the Vote Kwinana campaign,” she said.

“I believe the community spirit has grown even stronger with the wonderful support the community gives to initiatives and events in the City, such as the Kwinana Adventure Park, the Edge Skatepark, and our recent large-scale events,” said Councillor Mills.

Councillors Mills has been a resident in Kwinana for five years and was first elected into Council in 2015.

KWINANA AS A CATALYST FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Kwinana’s exciting future and the pivotal role it has played in boosting the State’s economy was recognised at a Committee for Perth event held in April.

City of Kwinana Chief Executive Officer Joanne Abbiss, was included as one of the panel of guest speakers at the event ‘Kwinana as a Catalyst for Economic Development’. The event also saw the release of a special report of the same title by the University of Western Australia and the Committee for Perth as a part of the FACTBase project.

Both the event and the report highlighted the significant impact the Kwinana Industrial Area has had for the State and also the vast opportunities that the area would create in the future in terms of both State revenue and job creation with the development of the Outer Harbour.

Looking specifically at Kwinana as a resilient economy and as a catalyst for economic development in the Perth and Peel region, this report highlighted how crucial the Kwinana Industrial Area has become, creating over 13,000 jobs and contributing more than $15 billion dollars to the state’s economy.

The report confirmed that a number of key commitments in infrastructure and governance for the area are needed such as the Outer Harbour, which will contribute substantially to the activities being carried out in the area and have a positive effect on future investment in the region.

Catering to both the national and international markets as a key link in the state’s global trade connections, and with the establishment of the Outer Harbour, the Kwinana Industrial Area has the potential to generate an annual revenue in the order of $42.4 billion, with projected flow on effects in Australia of $28 billion.

BUILDING NEIGHBOURHOODS – STREET BY STREET Connecting Community for Kids is working in conjunction with the City of Kwinana, local service providers and passionate community members to encourage individuals to connect with their neighbours, and develop a greater cooperative spirit.

Research shows that social isolation and loneliness impacts heavily on mental and physical health. Studies also indicate that providing a safe, connected local environment for children and families increases their overall health and wellbeing.

Nicole Hunt, Kwinana Community Facilitator at Connecting Community for Kids believes the communities in which children live are among the most important contexts for time spent outside of home and school. “This makes neighbourhoods a key factor in the way children grow and develop,”

The Connecting Community for Kids Building Neighbourhood Connections Kwinana Action Team have participated in Building Neighbourhood Training; facilitated by Street by Street, a national project building neighbourhood networks and turning streets into communities.

The Action Team aims to strengthen neighbourhood relationships to make a positive difference to their own streets and ultimately, the wider community. If you are interested in participating in the Connecting Community for Kids Initiative, joining an Action Team or partaking in training, please contact 0429 904 324 or [email protected].

Community participation is vital to the success of the initiative, with Kwinana children and families at the heart of this project.

Winter meals are all about comfort and wholesome food. Here are some tips from Live Lighter to help you stay healthy this winter.

Eat more plants!

While the fresh salads of summer aren’t so appealing in winter, try these to get to your five serves of vegies everyday

• Roast a huge tray of vegetables. Keep them in the fridge to add to your meals all week; roast veggie salad, sandwiches, pasta, pizza, frittata, soup.

• Add canned lentils or beans to any of your mince dishes such as bolognese sauce, mexican filling or burger patties. They are cheap and blend right in.

• Soups are an excellent way to get a big veggie hit. Tweak your family favourite meals by throwing in a few extra serves of veg: add carrots and beans to your minestrone, corn kernels to your chicken soup and some zucchini to your pea and ham. Easy pea-sy!

Raising awareness of the problems with single-use disposable plastic, please join 100,000+ West Australians and a million+ people worldwide for Plastic Free July.

The plastic bottles, bags and takeaway containers that we use for just a few minutes every day are made by a material designed to last forever and due to their long-lasting design break up, not down and become permanent pollution.

Throughout July we are encouraging residents to take the challenge and choose to refuse single-use plastic. By choosing to become a part of the solution, you can take action by;

• Avoiding products in plastic packaging (choose alternatives)

• Reducing where possible (opt for refills, remember your reusable shopping bags)

• Refusing plastics that escape as litter (e.g. straws, takeaway cups, utensils, balloons)

• Recycling what cannot be avoided

Want more tips to help you reduce single-use plastics? Alongside presenter Kerry Pond, the City of Kwinana and Switch your Thinking will be hosting the Plastic Not So Fantastic workshop to help you minimise single-use plastics in your home and life, saving both money and the planet!
