    The Columbus Volunteer Challenge mobilized28,435 volunteers who worked on more than500 projects over more than three weeks. Thecit-wide volunteer event focused on liftingup and highlighting the importance of serviceto others. Led in partnership b the Cit ofColumbus and United Wa of Central Ohio,the Columbus Volunteer Challenge beganwith The Ohio State Universits volunteeringefforts on Communit Commitment Da andconcluded on United Wa of Central OhiosCommunit Care Da, September 11, whichis also the National Da of Service. Volunteerprojects have engaged individuals, families,oung professionals, teens, faith-based andcorporate volunteers.

    The Columbus Volunteer Challenge realllived up to its promise as the premierbicentennial service event it will be a

    lasting legac of our bicentennial ear, saidColumbus Maor Michael B. Coleman. Thepeople of Columbus stepped up like never beforeto help their friends and neighbors and makethe cit we call home an even better place tolive, work and pla.

    The Columbus Volunteer Challenge is a shining

    example of the spirit of Columbus, said JanetE. Jackson, President and CEO of United Waof Central Ohio. Its success shows that thereare thousands of caring and engaged people inColumbus who work together to improve livesand strengthen our communit.

    Throughout the Challenge, volunteers weremobilized at schools, communit gardens, parks,and nonprofit and faith-based organizations.Important work was undertaken, includingbeautifing neighborhoods, repairing books atpreschools, serving meals to the homeless,

    teaching oung children about health foods,donating blood, mentoring outh, collectingschool supplies and food, and countlessother projects. The estimated total financialimpact of the Challenge to the communit ismore than $1.5 million.

    The Challenge successfull mobilized

    far more people in our communit thanever before and it was just thebeginning.     a big part of our overall success. The list of our corporate partnerswho participated is long, but I want to call out Grange Insurancefor supporting a ver successful food drive for LifeCare Alliance,U.S. Bank for sponsoring the Ultimate Back to School Drive whichcollected school supplies for Columbus Cit Schools students, and

    Lowes for helping Kroger volunteers create gardens at Godman Guildthat will provide fresh vegetables for the people the serve. Thanksalso to Jenis Splendid Ice Creams, Donatos and Home Depot for theirin-kind support and to our media partners: The Columbus Dispatch,Media Source, Orange Barrel Media, Clear Channel Outdoor, WBNS-10TV, WCMH-4, Radio One and CD 102.5.

    We have a lot to to celebrate during this bicentennial ear, but for methe Columbus Volunteer Challenge stands out as the best example ofthe spirit of Columbus. The people in our communit are dedicated toservice and to getting things done. When we see needs we addressthem. When we face problems we solve them. Columbus is our cit,and together we will work to make it the best cit it can be.

    prESIDENTS UpDaTEWell, we did it! Through theColumbus Volunteer Challengewe inspired more peopleto volunteer and serve ourcommunit than we ever have

    before. Far more. 28,435people gave their time toimprove lives and strengthenour communit during theChallenge -- that is impressiveresult and we should all bever proud. Maor Coleman hasoften said that the ColumbusVolunteer Challenge will be the

    lasting legac of the bicentennial ear, and it could not have happenedwithout the man engaged and caring partners who came together tomake the Challenge a realit. I want to thank our partners who have

    worked so hard: Vineard Columbus, The Church of Jesus Christ ofLatter-Da Saints, HandsOn Central Ohio, Pa It Forward at the OhioUnion, Keep Columbus Beautiful, and the Columbus Cit Schools.I also want to thank ever faith-based organization that participated,and there were so man that stepped up. And special thanks are dueto the countless educators in school sstems throughout central Ohiowho volunteered their help.

    The Challenge ended with a bang on Communit Care Da which wasonce again sponsored b Kroger and Bob Evans. Their continuedsupport of volunteering deserves a special recognition the were

    United Wa of Central Ohio welcomesDawn Tler Lee to the organization asSenior Vice President of CommunitImpact. In this ke leadership role,she will guide United Was ongoingwork to address the most challengingissues facing our communit in the

    interrelated areas of Education, Income,Health and Home.

    We are ver fortunate to have Dawn Tler Lee joining the United Waleadership team, said Janet Jackson. We are deepl indebted to RickCarrick, retiring Senior Vice President of Communit Impact, for hisinnovative leadership. Dawns wealth of experience in the central Ohiononprofit, government and higher education communities will greatlenhance our efforts to improve lives and strengthen our communit.Dawn also shares United Was deep commitment to diversit andinclusion, and will be a champion of our work in this area.

    UNITED Way Of CENTraL OhIO WELCOmES NEWSENIOr VICE prESIDENT Of COmmUNITy ImpaCT

    Dawn most recentl served as Executive Director of the PartnersAchieving Communit Transformation (PACT), a historic redevelopmentinitiative on Columbus Near East Side. PACT is a partnership of theOhio State Universit, the Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authorit,the Cit of Columbus and Near East Side stakeholders.

    Dawn has also served in the Office of Outreach and Engagement andthe Office of Government Affairs at Ohio State, as Board Liaison forthe Columbus Board of Education, Legislative Aide to Columbus CitCouncil Member Charleta Tavares and Housing Polic Director for theCoalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio. She is a graduateof the African-American Leadership Academ, Project Diversit and arecipient of the Business First 40 Under 40 Award. Dawn is chair ofthe Central Ohio Transit Authorit Board, a member of the ColumbusSchool for Girls Boards of Trustees and a member of the board ofROX Ruling our Experiences - an organization committed to theleadership development of adolescent girls.

    UNITED Way Of CENTraL OhIO SETS$52.55 mILLION GOaL fOr 2012 CampaIGN

    GOaL rEprESENTS bEGINNING Of mULTI-yEar TraNSfOrmaTIONaL

    EffOrT LED by CO-ChaIrS, CINDy aND STEVE raSmUSSENUnited Wa of Central Ohio announced a 2012 campaign goal of$52.55 million. This goal represents the beginning of a multi-eartransformational fundraising effort that will improve lives, strengthenour communit and fight povert. It is more than $2.5 million, or 4.9percent higher than the 2011 campaigns final result.

    The goal was presented to the United Wa of Central Ohio Board ofTrustees b 2012 Campaign Co-Chair, Steve Rasmussen. Rasmussenis Chief Executive Officer of Nationwide, one of the strongest nationalcorporate partners of the United Wa movement, and co-chairs thecampaign with his wife Cind. The 2012 Labor Co-Chair is Dennis

    Nicodemus, President of the International Brotherhood of ElectricalWorkers Local 683.

    Toda we announced an ambitious goal for the 2012 UnitedWa campaign because tackling povert in our communit is anambitious undertaking, said Steve Rasmussen. United Wa isuniquel positioned to address the challenge of povert in centralOhio b identifing the most pressing needs in our communitand working across multiple nonprofits and other organizations toappl coordinated strategies. I urge donors to support United WasCommunit Impact Fund, which addresses the fundamental buildingblocks that help improve peoples lives and provide a clear, successfuland sustainable path out of povert.

    Cind and Steves dnamic leadership is just what we need toachieve this ambitious goal, said Janet Jackson. Their vision fortransforming our fundraising efforts over the next few ears will speed

    Its imperative that we come together as a communit to invest inUnited Wa and build for the future, Rasmussen added. Wereasking local business and communit leaders as well as members ofthe general public to begin, continue or increase their support of UnitedWa. A critical element in meeting this campaigns ambitious goal andthe growing challenge of povert in our communit will be attracting thesupport of new corporate partners and individual donors.

    The Rasmussens are leading efforts to transform United Wa of CentralOhios annual campaign to inspire and mobilize more people to give,advocate and volunteer. Projects include:

    A comprehensive review of fundraising opportunities and

    development of long-term action plans to reach people both withinand outside of workplaces.

    Re-designing the United Way website to greatly enhance user

    experience, make it more mobile-friendl and better integratedwith social media.

    Creating compelling marketing materials that explain the poverty

    challenge central Ohio faces and United Was important role in

    addressing this challenge.The 2012 United Wa of Central Ohio Campaign ends on March 31,2013. Results of the campaign will be announced at the Celebration ofExcellence on Ma 8, 2013.

    On September 16, more than 120 PRIDECouncil members and their guests gathered atBarcelona for the second annual AppreciationEvent. Janet Jackson thanked PRIDE Councilco-chairs Sue McManus, Mark Matson, JeffPorter and Kevin Tler for their leadership andNationwide for sponsoring the event. Shepresented Rick Carrick with the PRIDE Impact

    Award which recognizes significant impact inthe LGBT communit and central Ohio, andcontributions to United Wa of Central Ohiosmission through leadership and communitinvolvement.

    man generous and service minded volunteers,The Crane famil and Crane Group stand out. Thehave improved the lives of countless thousandsof people over man decades, and have providedinvaluable support and guidance to United Waof Central Ohio. So it is not surprising that CraneGroup choose to celebrate its 65th anniversar bonce again paing it forward.

    On September 20, Crane Group President andCEO Tann Crane announced a $1 million gift tothe Southern Gatewa Initiative to support effortsto revitalize and redevelop Columbus South Sidecommunit. The South Side is one of five prioritneighborhoods that are the focus of United WasHome Impact area.

    Our compan has been a proud neighbor inthe South Side communit for 65 ears, TannCrane, president and CEO of Crane Group,said. Our continued support of the SouthernGatewa Initiative will ensure that the South Sideneighborhoods thrive.

    The contribution will go toward the rehabilitationof the Reeb Elementar School as a multipurpose

    facilit that will offer social programming andhouse the South Side Learning Center. The Citof Columbus has invested $18 million in theSouthern Gatewa partnerships. Donatos Pizzeriafounder Jim Grote and his famil contributed $1million to the effort and were on hand at theCrane Group announcement.

    United Wa has a long histor of investmentin programs and initiatives that benefit thecitizens of the Southside. This ear is the firstof a three-ear commitment to invest a total of$2.6 million in support for housing rehabilitation

    and afterschool programming with CommunitDevelopment for All People, as well as investingin high-qualit child care through SouthsideLearning and Development Center.

    As part of its 65th anniversar celebration, CraneGroup donated $30,000 toward plagroundequipment and provided over 100 volunteersassociates to build a new plaground at LincolnPark on the South Side.

    Jameson (Jim) Crane and Robert Crane, Jr.,who lead the Crane companies for man ears,have had a long histor of support for thework of United Wa. Robert Crane, Jr. served

    as 1974 General Campaign Chair, his wife,Loann Crane joined with Lenn SchottensteinSagner to establish an endowed gift whichprovides ongoing funding for the work ofcommunit impact. Tann Crane has beena tireless volunteer for United Wa, servingas Board of Trustees chair and 1999 GeneralCampaign Chair. Tann has focused man ofher efforts on education and wasinstrumental in helping United Waestablish its earl learning initiativeStart Smart. She also chairs the

    Womens Leadership Council. JamieCrane has served on the campaigncabinet and her husband Tim Millerserves as a member of the UnitedWa Board of Trustees, and haschaired the Income Impact Councilamong man other leadershiproles. Elizabeth Crane and Dr. RobCrane have both served in volunteerleadership positions in the past.

    Crane famil members have also long beensome of United Was most generous donors.Jameson Crane, Loann Crane, Tann Craneand husband John Wolff, Elizabeth Crane

    and husband Richard McKee, Paige andMichael Crane, Jamie Crane and Tim Miller,Meredith and Ja Crane and Sall Crane areall Tocqueville Societ members. Crane Grouphas ranked number one among all central Ohiocompanies in per capita giving in the past,and continues to consistentl be among thever highest givers.

    An era at United Wa of Central Ohio hasended with the retirement of Rick Carrick,Senior Vice President of Communit Impact.

    Ricks career spanned 34 eventful ears.He began at what was then called UnitedWa of Franklin Count as an intern andquickl became an indispensable leaderin the organization. He built a strongCommunit Impact team and helped leadUnited Was entire team through evermajor change it undertook for decades.Rick helped guide the organization when itbecame one of the first United Was in thecountr to embrace the Communit Impactmodel that has proven so effective atidentifing needs and implementing lastingchange. He also provided his invaluableinsights to volunteer leaders when UnitedWa developed its Strategic Frameworkand when our communit came together tolaunch its Bold Goals.

    Ricks leadership is also one of the kereasons wh United Wa of Central Ohiohas been such a successful champion ofdiversit and inclusion over the ears. He hasconsistentl worked to develop and promotegroundbreaking efforts like Project Diversit

    and Pride Leadership that have helpedprepare leaders of diverse backgroundsto help guide local nonprofits as boardmembers. He was recentl honored withPRIDE Councils PRIDE Impact Award inrecognition of his significant impact in theLGBT communit.

    ELVIS haS LEfT ThE bUILDINGrICk CarrICk LEaVES a LaSTING LEGaCy

    There is a common thread that runs throughoutall of Ricks work, said Janet Jackson, A reasonthat he has been so successful, so valuable

    and so loved. Ever time our organizationapproaches a new opportunit or issue, Rickalwas thinks first about how our actions canmost effectivel help the people we serve.Through ever strategic discussion and everprogram analsis he never loses sight of whatmakes our work so powerful. We improvelives and strengthen our communit andcountless lives in central Ohio have beenimproved because of Rick Carricks work.

    As part of a special video tribute to Rick,United Wa Worldwide President and CEO Brian

    Gallagher, who worked ver closel with Rickduring his time as President and CEO of UnitedWa of Central Ohio, said, Ricks leadershipchallenged all of us to re-think both the goalswe set for our organization as well as theapproach we took to our work. As a result,Columbus continues be on the cutting edge ofreal communit change.

    To honor Ricks legac, United Wa of CentralOhio created the Richard V. Carrick CommunitLeadership Award which will be presentedannuall to a member agenc to recognize

    excellence and collective impact. The awardincludes an honorarium designed to helpagenc staff pursue professional and leadershipdevelopment opportunities. Communit Impactstaff will participate in the annual selection ofthe award recipient.
