“I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The
heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner. Less sure about everything, it freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life. You can't connect the dots looking forward;
you can only connect them looking backward. So you have to trust that the dots
will somehow connect in your future”
- Steve JobsLiving without Limits6
People that are willing to experience negative emotional experiences actually enjoy better mental health and perform at higher levels in their professional roles.
(Bond and Bunce 2003; Donaldson and Bond 2004)
It’s also been noted that up to half of the variations and symptoms of depression can be accounted for by lack of acceptance and willingness.
(Hayes, Strosahl, et al. 2004)

Living without Limits7
The goal of willingness is not to feel better.
The goal of willingness is to open yourself up to the
vitality of the moment and to move more effectively
toward what you value or your goals and objectives.

Resilience is the ability to roll with the punches.
When stress, adversity, or trauma strikes, you still
experience anger, grief, and pain, but you're able to
keep functioning—both physically and
psychologically.
What is Resilience?
Living without Limits10
Developing Resilience1. Eliminate the word STRESS from your
vocabulary.
2. Get connected.
Living without Limits11
Who are you connected to?1. Write down the five people you hang
around most of the time.
2. Next to their name, put a “+” if they are
resilient or a “–” if they aren’t.
3. Who are you becoming as a result of this
influence? What’s happening to your
resilience?

Regular refueling—input—is a
prerequisite for quality output because
the brain is an energy machine,
consuming 20 percent of the body's
calories, even though it's only 2 percent
of total body mass. Energy that gets
expended must be resupplied.
• Take a lunch break away from your desk.
• Schedule one 2-week vacation every year.
• Leave your work at work.
• Free yourself from “DIY” disorder.
