With 18 miles of sandy shoreline, Long Beach Island has a rich reputation in coastal fishing due to the variety of commercial and party boat fleets, charter boats, tackle shops, and the annual fall surf-fishing derby. LBI provides some unique fishing opportunities for the diehard to the occasional fisherman. As the marsh grass regener-ates, changing from lifeless shades of brown to vibrant hues of green, it signals the beginning of the inshore recreational fishing season. The changing of seasons, temperature, and sun’s angle trigger mass migrations of fish up and down the East Coast. Although dependent on certain seasonal variables, the first week of May usually shows the first influx of bluefish and striped bass into our local inlets and estuaries. These gamefish are hungry from their northernly migration up the coast and continually forage on several species of baitfish, providing anglers many opportunities at catching along the way. As the season progresses and the temperatures rise, summer flounder/fluke begin to migrate into our waters from their wintering grounds off the continental shelf. These fluke will potentially travel 40-60 miles to reach our bays and inlets. The summer months from June to Septem-ber allow anglers to have opportunities at catching fluke. Fluke make for excellent table-fare, but make sure they are over the state’s minimum of 18 inches. As fall approaches, several migrations will be simultaneously occurring off the coast of New Jersey. Fluke will be heading offshore, blue-fish and striped bass will be migrating south, and the sea bass and blackfish will be moving to their deeper offshore wrecks from their summer spent inshore. Long Beach Is-land provides many chances at catching fish throughout the spring, summer, and fall, but location is an important factor
that should be considered before you set out. The location of LBI encapsulates these migrational routes and enables boat fisherman, jetty “hoppers”, surf “rats”, and the occasional day tripper an opportunity to catch fish and enjoy nature. Whether it be from boat or land, “time on the water is always time well spent” es-pecially with friends and family. The northern tip of the island (Barnegat Light) provides ample locations to enjoy fishing for the novice or serious angler. Backbay areas, jet-ties along the inlet, and the surf out in front are some areas that are very accessible. In addition to “old Barney” over-looking the inlet, the state park offers ample parking, picnic areas, and public restrooms. As you travel south along the island, there are various locations to fish along the beaches - just look for the public beach access areas. The rest is up to you, to explore and enjoy the tranquility of the surf. The southern tip of the island is a state wildlife refuge offering excellent surf fishing and beach combing opportunities. Be sure to follow all local, state, and federal ordinances when accessing fishing areas - a summons would surely spoil your outdoors adventure. There are several tackle shops along the island provid-ing anglers with top-quality gear, tackle, and bait. Fisher-

man’s Headquarters is probably the most notable and the first bait shop that you will hit when entering the island just past the first light. I try to write this from a non-biased angle, but the crew at Fisherman’s HQ are first-rate and al-ways willing to point the angler in the right direction. Surf City Bait & Tackle and Oceanside Bait & Tackle are tackle stores you will hit if going north or south on the boulevard. One tip to making your fishing trip more successful, don’t
be afraid to ask questions. Tackle shops are hubs to fishing knowledge and to what particular species is biting. If you prefer to pursue your catch by boat, there are various party & charter boats on the island. Carolynn Ann III, Miss Barnegat Light, and the Doris Mae sail daily out of Barnegat Light and depending on the season will fish for
bluefish, striped bass, sea bass, blackfish, and fluke. Most trips are full so it’s best to call ahead for details, and get to the docks early prior to the departure times. If your look-ing for a more private, one-on-one fishing experience - try booking one of the many charter boat captains or fishing guides located in the surrounding area. Although private charter boats may be slightly more pricey, your getting more personalized fishing attention and instruction. So the next time your planning to visit LBI grab your rod & reel, hit the surf, jump on a party boat, or book a charter to enjoy this exciting, and addicting fishery.

South of the Wooden JettyAt the southern end of LBI is a wooden jetty. It marks the end of the island and the beginning of the bird sanctuary. In the winter, after a storm, this area of the beach is full of shells. It is also a favorite surfer’s beach.
South of the jetty is the Holgate Unit of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge. It consists of more than 400 acres of barrier beaches, dunes and tidal salt marsh. One of New Jersey’s last remaining undeveloped barrier islands, this Natural Heritage Priority Site is an important and productive area for beachnesting birds. This site has also been designated a globally signifi-cant IBA by National Audubon for supporting breeding Piping Plovers.
The Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus) is a small sand-colored, sparrow-sized shorebird that nests and feeds along coastal sand and gravel beaches in North America and the Bahamas. The adult has yellow-orange legs, a black band across the forehead from eye to eye, and a black ring around the neck. This chest band is usually thicker in males during the breeding season, and it’s the only reliable way to tell the sexes apart. It is difficult to see when standing still as it blends well with open, sandy beach habitats. It typically runs in short starts and stops.
The pristine dunes and beaches of Holgate provide essential nesting and for-aging habitat for several imperiled species of beachnesting birds and stands as one of the last strongholds for these species. Regular breeders include feder-ally-threatened and state-endangered Piping Plovers, the state-special concern American Oystercatchers and state-endangered Black Skimmers and Least Terns. Over fifty additional bird species nest at Holgate including Osprey, American Black Duck, Willet and Seaside Sparrow.

The popularity of cocktails at that time was at least partly due to the need to cover up the bad taste of some of the crudely produced hooch smuggled by the bootleggers. Some of the cocktail recipes used today were invented in the days of Prohibition as cocktail recipes flourished in the illegal bars, parties and clubs of major American cities.
This period was one of great innovation. One of the most popular cocktails the Margaritais said to
have originated in 1948. A Dallas socialite named Margarita Sames supposedly hosted a pool side Christmas party at her vacation
home in Acapulco, Mexico. The party game for Margarita was to mix drinks behind the bar and
let her guests rate the results. When she mixed three parts tequila with one part triple sec and one
part lime, it was such a success among her guests that it quickly traveled from Texas to Hollywood and
the rest of the country, bearing her name.
Legend also says the drink originated in the early 1930’s at the Caliente Racetrack Bar in Tijuana, Mexico. There is little evidence, though, for the story of showgirl Marjorie King who had an allergy to most alcoholic drinks and could only drink tequila. In 1938, she
asked for a tequila cocktail rather than a shot at the Rancho Del Glo-ria Bar in Rosarita Beach, Mexico. The bartender, Danny Herrera,
poured tequila over shaved ice then added lemon and triple sec. The drink was then named after Marjorie (or at least, the Spanish translation
of her name).
In the second half of the twentieth century, the cocktail has taken on many guises as its popularity has flourished. Both literature and film have contrib-uted to the images of wealth and class associated with the cocktail hour.
With the constant creation of new drinks (with some strange and interesting names), cocktails have become increasingly popular. With drink names such
as the Freddy Kruger, pan galactic gargle blaster, Afternoon Delight and Sex on the Beach, it’s no wonder cocktails are all the rage.

On January 16, 1920, the National Prohibition Act became the 18th Amendment to the United States Constitution. This meant it was illegal to manufacture, sell, transport, import, or export any “intoxicating liquors. “ Despite this, much of the general public still had ways to gain access to the illegal substance, often through speakeasies and private parties. Gangsters focused on bootlegging and moonshine, making Chicago a center of booze, gambling and prostitution. Al Capone was the most notorious crime boss and the power behind the illegal activities in Chicago during Prohibition. As a gangster and racketeer, Capone became one of the biggest bootleggers of all time.

Happy Birthday, My Love
Meet the artist Cathleen Englesen Sat April 28th at North End Trilogy
4th and Broadway, Barnegat Light, NJ 609-494-9640 with a rain date of May 5th. 11 am - 4 pm
We only met a few weeks before my birth-day, when it he said, “Let’s go out for lunch.” It wasn’t a traditional date, it was a Beach Haven date! We hopped on our bikes and peddled through the still
empty streets on a warm May weekend. “Where are we going,” I asked. He laughed and said, “Just trust me.” I only knew him a couple of weeks, how could I trust him? He doesn’t know anything about me and I don’t know anything about him. We turned right on Centre Street and rode another block to the Holiday Snack Bar. I looked at him and he smiled. How did he know I loved the Holiday Snack Bar? In we went and had a wonderful lunch. Then what a surprise when they placed a birth-day cake in front of me. “How did you know?” I asked. “I have friends who know you!” He laughed. I think it was at that moment that I fell in love. It was ten years ago that we met and every year we had lunch and birthday cake at the Holi-day Snack Bar. It became our birthday tradition.

Planning is underway for the 4th Annual Jazzy Scallop and Seafood Festival. The event will take
place on June 23, 2012 from 3 pm to 6 pm under the big white tent at Viking Village, 19th Street and Bay-view Avenue, Barnegat Light. This event entails a sampling of seafood dishes prepared with ‘Viking Fresh” product coming from the Viking Village dock. Area restaurants compete to win the festival prize “Favorite Sample” as they present their original recipes – creativity & flavor are found in abundance! No mistake about it – this is a high-end celebration of the freshest seafood. Accompanying the tasty fare is live jazz music performed by local jazz talent “Cymbals and Swing”, a crowd favorite from last year’s festival. Delicious food, relaxing music and an outdoor setting combine to create a truly delightful ambiance. Viking Village partners with other groups during this celebration of New Jersey’s seafood heritage. At past festivals, Reclam the Bay has staffed the raw bar and educated our guests about their efforts; the Surflight Theatre has performed for the crowd; nov-elist and commercial fishing Captain Linda Green-law held a book-signing; the Tuckerton Seaport has educated attendees about the culture of the Barne-gat Bay; Viking Village has screened its very own
“dock”umentary called “Fish for Tomorrow” produced by local Dave Kaltenbach. When you attend the Jazzy Scallop and Seafood Festival, you never know what additional treats are in store for you! Many area businesses join in the fun and supply our “Jazzy Auction” with such donations as event tick-ets, products, gift certificates, boating & fishing trips, etc. While enjoying your seafood samples, be sure to stroll through the auction area to see what prizes you might win. Proceeds from the Festival benefit the Southern Regional High School scholarship fund and other Industry and Island Non-Profits. Festival tickets will be available for purchase beginning May 25th and are sold at the Viking Village Shoppes and at the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce. Tickets sold before the event are $25 and tickets sold the day of the event are $30. Questions may be di-rected to the Viking Village dock office by sending an email to [email protected].. Join us for a wonderful celebration of our New Jer-sey seafood heritage and a taste of summer on New Jersey’s Long Beach Island.

How does one begin to believe in miracles? What keeps a miracle alive? So much about the con-cept is mysterious, but I suspect a miracle begins long before it happens. Sometimes it waits at the end of a seemingly hopeless detour. Sometimes it is covered by a sheath of snow, or rests under the tide as it pulls away from the shore, seemingly forever. Thirty-seven years ago I announced to my travel agent that I was on my way across the ocean for the last time. I was just too lonely there by myself. Who could have known that I would meet my husband and best friend the day I arrived in Spain? The siren of miracles knew it was time to begin to help me figure out why I’d lived three decades feeling alone. Bob and I married within months and he introduced me to LBI on our honeymoon. In front of the Drifting Sands Motel when it was still a simple brown building on the beach, I had al-ready decided how we should honor my 63rd birthday and our anniversary celebration in 2012. Bob, married to me for several months, was already accustomed to my wild dreams and predictions and politely listened. The plan was to live close enough to exit 63 so that I could visit LBI daily.
Sea Sirens: Miracles and Belief
Miracles are simple; they are uncomplicated. They have nothing to do with political correctness and don’t need polls for approval. Miracles are small enough to be missed by those expecting great happenings. They can also be missed by those who expect nothing. They only ask that we be ready when they arrive. They are about following one’s heart and trusting one’s soul that they will happen. Who can explain that last winter our beach was buried with snow drifts and the bay had frozen over, yet this winter on Groundhog’s Day, I was hunting for sea glass on 48th street in a sweatshirt and flip-flops? Imagine what I would have missed had I assumed this winter would be like the last. Imagine what I would have missed had I not gone to Spain one more time. Who can explain that long after the tourists and travelers have packed up and left the island, it is not lonely to those who love it here when the ferris wheel is stilled? How does this NYC transplant explain that I am not lonely when by myself for hours day after day through the winter with the background rhythm of the sea and the seagulls’ plea? Miracles need not be explained, defended, justified. They need only be embraced. Believed. Trusted. Enjoyed. Appreciated. As the miracle of warm weather becomes the norm, as sum-mer shopkeepers return after a winter away from the crowds, as pastel clothes and vibrant bath towels will soon hang on clotheslines that have been perches for gulls through the winter months, the miracle of life on the island has never left. It has not felt lonely or desolate for those who love it here all year. The beaches have been filled with hearts and souls of those who know that we are never alone when surrounded by the miracle of the joining of sand and sea and sky … on LBI.

Her Eyes Met Mine As She Walked Down The Corridor Looking Into The Kennels. I Felt Her Need Instantly And Knew I Had To Help
Her. I Wagged My Tail, So She Wouldn’t Be Afraid. As She Stopped At My Kennel I Blocked Her From The View Of My Accident I Had In The Back Of My Cage. I Didn’t Want Her To Know ….I Wasn’t Walked Today. Sometimes The Shelter Keepers Get Too Busy…I Didn’t want Her To Think Poorly Of Them. As She Read My Kennel Card I Was Worried She Would Feel Sad About My Past. I Only Have The Future To Look Forward To And I Am Hoping To Make Someone Really Happy. She Made A Kissy Sound At Me And I Rubbed My Head Up Against The Bars In My Cage To Comfort Her. Gentle Fingertips Caressed My Neck; She Was Desperate For Companionship! A Tear Fell Down Her Cheek And I Raised My Paw To Assure Her….That All Would Be Well. Soon My Kennel Door Opened And Her Smile Was So Bright I Jumped Into Her Arms. I Would Promise To Keep Her Safe And Always Be By Her Side. I Was So Fortunate That She Came Down My Corridor. So Many More Are Out There Who Haven’t Walked The Corridor. So Many More To Be Saved. At Least I Saved One. I Rescued A Human Today
