Stewardship: Parishioners Answering God’s Call Upon hearing about a young, soon-to-be mom from El Salvador, living in Hoover, 3 Prince of Peace moms donated a crib, swing, stroller, car seat, rocking chair, clothes and lots of baby gear. This mom, a parishioner at another local Catholic church, is due with her first baby in June. The POP Moms reached out to her before even meeting her. Our God is good. It is so exciting to watch Him take care of His people, our people, working through those exemplifying stewardship. Help us! Submit your stewardship story examples to [email protected]. They may be edited for space consideration.

Casting Lots for the Seamless Garment (John 19:23-24)
The Fruit of Faith is Love The greatest disease in the West today is not TB or leprosy; it is being unwanted, unloved, and uncared for. We can cure physical diseases with medicine, but the only cure for loneliness, despair, and hopelessness is love. There are many in the world who are dying for a piece of bread but there are more dying for a little love. The poverty in the West is a different kind of poverty - it is not only a poverty of loneliness but also of spirituality. There is a hunger for love, as there is a hunger for God. (Mother Teresa, A simple Path, 1995, Ballantine Books, NY, page 79) If interested in becoming involved with the Seamless Garment Committee, call Tom & Elsbeth Germanson at 205.565.3456.
“Nuns on the Bus” NETWORK’s “Nuns on the Bus” are on a “Nuns on the Border” campaign tour and will be stopping at La Casita on June 5 at 9:00 am. Sister Simone Campell and fellow nuns will visit our Diocese on their national bus tour in efforts to encourage members of the Senate and House to support meaningful reform providing a pathway to citizenship and family reunification for more than 11 million undocumented immigrants. Please join us and support these women working for social justice. For more information, please visit www.nunsonthebus.org.
Shared Blessings Prince of Peace is excited to introduce a new ministry of parishioners helping parishioners. Are you updating your living room or bedroom or looking for a place to donate furniture, towels, sheets, etc.? Are you looking for a place for your old refrigerator or dryer? We can help you help others. Everyday, we have families in our parish who are in need. People lose jobs, get sick, spouses get deployed and many people are in dire economic circumstance. Please consider donating items you no longer have use for to Prince of Peace. We will accept all types of household necessities in good condition. Look in this section each Sunday for specific needs of our parish...you might have them in your basement or attic. We are currently in need of a full/queen size bed and linens and a chest of drawers. If you would like to be a part of this exciting ministry or for more information, contact Kathy Claypoole at 205.451.3332 or email at [email protected].
Notes from Fr. Henry McDaid I was born in Derry, Northern Ireland and my early education was under the auspices of the Sisters of Mercy, The Christian Brothers, and high school was St. Colimb’s College. My vocation to priesthood led me to St. Kieran’s College, Kilkenny. After six years of formal seminary formation, Bishop Peter Birch, the local bishop, ordained 14 young men to the Priesthood at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Three of the 14 were among nine of the priests ordained in Ireland for the Diocese of Mobile-Birmingham. On July 5, 1963, I traveled to Mobile, Alabama where I spent six years at St. Mary’s Parish. In April of 1969, I was assigned to St. James Parish in Gadsden. Within a few months of my arrival, Northern Alabama was established as a separate diocese with Birmingham being the see city. The new diocese became and remains my home.
Since 1969, my priestly assignments took me to all arts and parts of Northern Alabama; from larger suburban parishes, to medium urban parishes, to little rural communities. It has been my privilege to serve in a variety of parishes - the common bond was our shared humanity and faith and I am most grateful to each and every member of those communities. An unusual and very privileged assignment was my part-time ministry in the Diocesan Worship Office for four years. Along with Sister Mary Robert, OSB and Sister Jackie de Bone, we travelled throughout the diocese assisting parishes as they implemented the liturgical developments of the Second Vatican Council. Those four years were invigorating times, experiencing the freshness of new life as the Spirit of Vatican II spread throughout the diocese and the world. It was wonderful to be so involved at the renewal of the liturgy, the source and summit of the life of the Church.
In 2003, Bishop Foley, granted me permission to retire. Fr. John Fallon graciously invited me to take up residence at Prince of Peace Parish. For the past 10 years, my primary ministry has been to parishioners unable to come to church and take part physically at the Table of the Lord. It continues to be rewarding to ‘bring the church’ to the homebound, to those in hospitals and retirement homes while still presiding at liturgy in a fully alive Catholic community.
Please join me on June 2 as I celebrate the 11:00 am Mass in gratitude for the privilege of the priestly ministry.
