Religious Education Special Education in Religious Education: We are excited to begin the 5th year with our Special Education program for Formation. This class is offered as a self-contained class during both the 8:30 and 9:40 class times. It is open to all children, all ages, and all ability levels. We individualize our Catechesis program to meet the needs of all learners. We have three teachers leading the program this year: a special education teacher, a speech and language pathologist and a registered nurse - what a teaching team! If you would like to enroll your child or have any questions, please contact Megan Everett at [email protected].

Sunday School is underway! Please have your children join us if they haven’t already. It is not too late to register. You may register your children (K3 – GR12) on the Prince of Peace website, www.popcatholic.org, or pick up a form in the labeled basket by the Religious Education Office. Payment can be made via Paypal on the website or by check made payable to ‘Prince of Peace’. We are excited about the upcoming year and look forward to sharing the richness of our faith with your children in this Formation Ministry!

Looking for a Stewardship activity in the Formation Ministry? We can always use a few helping hands. Please contact Megan Everett at [email protected] or stop by the Religious Education office if you can help.

Upcoming Events: Sunday School Classes (K3 thru GR12): October 13, 20, 27 Confirmation Class: October 13 - All Day Retreat 8:00 am - 6:00 pm. Meet at the church. Please keep these students and their teachers in your prayers as they prepare for this Sacrament. First Reconciliation - Class One: October 27, 9:35 am, Day Chapel

Marriage Enrichment Happy Together: The Catholic Blueprint for a Loving Marriage is a six-week workshop based on the acclaimed book by John Bosio, family life educator and former marriage and family therapist. Sessions will address problems and challenges faced by many couples. On October 16, Joe Ackerson will be here to discuss Chapters 4 & 5, “What about Me?” and “I Welcome and I Accept You.” $10 registration fee per couple includes the book. Join us on Wednesdays from 6:30-7:30 pm in the St. Monica Room for this workshop. Dinner is available in Deasy Hall before and childcare will be provided. Call Mike Brown at 205.822.9125 for more information and to register.

Columbarium Updates Prince of Peace is adding 2 new sections to the columbarium. Completion is scheduled for the end of October. It is comforting and strengthening to have a place of remembrance for loved ones and a measure of peace is drawn from the time-honored practice of burial in the shadow of the church.

Please help us keep your family contact information current. Notify the parish office if your address, phone number or email address has changed.

The Columbarium Board provides suitable planting and landscaping in the columbarium area. Flowers, plants or other decorations placed in the niche area will be removed every week. Items are not to be permanently affixed to the niches.

A Thought on Formation The formation of each individual becomes part of the formation of the parish community. As members of the Body of Christ, a stewardship parish recognizes that it has a call from God to give...to move from selfishness to selflessness. This formation is a life-long journey of conversion for both the individual and the parish. It involves education of the mind and conversion of the heart. Ongoing Catholic education is important if we are to grow in our lives as stewards.

Stewardship: Parishioners

Answering God’s Call A parishioner had a friend who recently had her first baby. After family had visited, helped and returned home out of state, the young mother found that there were times when she needed an extra hand as she learned the art of managing a household and a new baby. The parishioner volunteered to accompany her to the grocery store to hold the baby while the mother shopped. A simple act, not requiring much time, yet very much appreciated. Hospitality…Christian kindness in action.

Please submit your stewardship story examples to [email protected].

They may be edited for space consideration.

Women’s Scholarship The Alabama State Kouncil of Auxiliary Ladies of the Knights of Columbus invite Catholic women in Alabama to apply for a $500 college scholarship. It will be awarded to two deserving women. Each recipient must be a practicing Catholic and a resident of Alabama. She may be a High School Senior, someone already in college, a woman who would like to return to college, or one desiring to pursue a graduate degree. To apply, please submit a resume, which includes your parish, academic standing, volunteer activities and organizations and two letters of recommendation of which one should be from your parish priest. Everything must be sent in one complete package and post marked on or before December 31, 2013.

Nametags for

Church Members Who are those people I see at church every weekend? Wonder no more! The Welcome Committee will be taking orders for nametags at the Welcome Center for $5 (cash only). Why wear a nametag? You will get to know your fellow parishioners and make our church a friendlier place. You will be greeted by name as your arrive. You will know the names of those sitting around you and you can offer others the sign of peace by name. Everyone is encouraged to purchase a nametag. Stop by and order your nametag at the Welcome Center!

Lord, when did we see you... Pastor Jeremiah Steepek transformed himself into a homeless person. He went to the 10,000 member church where he was to be introduced as the head pastor that morning. He walked around his soon to be church for 30 minutes while people were arriving. Only 3 people said hello to him. He asked people for change to buy food....NO ONE in the church gave him change. He attempted to sit in the front of the sanctuary but was asked by the ushers to sit in the back. His greeting was returned with stares & dirty looks, with people looking down on him and judging him.

As he sat in the back of the church, he listened to the church announcements and then the elders stood and said they were excited to introduce the new pastor of the church, Pastor Jeremiah Steepek. The congregation looked around, clapping with joy and anticipation. The homeless man sitting in the back stood up & started walking down the aisle. The clapping stopped with ALL eyes on him. He walked up to the altar, took the microphone from the elders (who were in on this) & paused for a moment. Then he recited:

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

When he concluded, he looked at the congregation & told them what he had experienced that morning. Many began to cry & heads were bowed in shame. Then he said, “Today I see a gathering of people, not a church of Jesus Christ. The world has enough people, but not enough disciples. When will YOU decide to become disciples?” He then dismissed service until next week. Being a Christian is more than something you claim. It's something you live by and share with others.

Casting Lots for the Seamless Garment (John 19:23-24)

Insights from Pope Francis’ interview By Robert Christian, Washington Post, September 23, 2013

For pro-life activists, was Pope Francis’ interview disappointing? Not for those of us who believe the protection of life requires more than opposition to legal abortion. To really stand for life means opposing the direct and indirect threats to life posed by inadequate healthcare, poverty, mass atrocities, euthanasia, lack of access to clean water, and countless other injustices, in addition to abortion. And opposition to abortion itself means providing support to families, pregnant women, and children, not simply supporting laws that restrict access to abortion.

For more information on the Seamless Garment Ministry, please contact Tom & Elsbeth Germanson at 205.565.3456.
