Dear Friends of CFA,

It is a pleasure to welcome you to the 2014-2015 CFA @ LMU Events and Performance Season. Our academic and performing arts programs are designed to understand art as communication and communication as art:

• each a critical endeavor that demands concentrated thought and effort to craft expressions of meaning-making for specific audiences;

• each engages the communication of critical messages in diverse forms that relay thought, meaning, faith and sometimes beauty;

• each demands students as artists, performers and intellectuals to grapple with social and political issues to make their ideas, passions and commitments known to others;

• each provides students with clear career pathways that are in need of persons with their immense talent, compassion and intellect to help in the processes of information, formation and transformation of self and society;

• and each helps students to understand and appreciate that which is both critical in making art, the role of art in/as culture, and the transcendent power in art and beauty.

In alignment with the LMU Lion’s Code our programs demand that students own the actions of mind, hand, body and heart to build the community that sustains us all. Such conscious engagement of the whole person is clearly present in the College of Communication and Fine Arts and in this season’s events.

All are welcome.

Staged Readings of South African Plays in collaboration with the Laband Art Gallery Artist Proof Studio Exhibit.

Following the Prescribed PathSeptember 13 – Nov 23 Artists Exhibited: Kim Abeles, Vito Acconci, Bas Jan Ader, Gabrielle Ferrer, Erin Mallea, Diane Meyer and Mark Ruwedel

The seven artists in Following the Prescribed Path took diverse journeys into both urban and natural landscapes over the course of six decades, and ultimately transformed their experiences into a range of media. The artists’ projects suggest diverse reasons for stepping out our doors — to follow in someone else’s footsteps (whether they are just in front of you or whether they have long since passed), to trace historical wounds, to

make a pilgrimage, or to pursue a hero’s journey in search of a transcendent experience. While it might be counterintuitive to think that following a predetermined route is creatively stimulating, the artists in this exhibition suggest otherwise.

This exhibition explores the story of Artists Proof Studio, the South African print workshop. Founded in 1991 in Johannesburg, this community-based arts organization has followed a trajectory of reconciliation and growth parallel to that of South Africa as a whole. The exhibition will focus on the studio as a place for professional training where a consciousness of art’s potential to contribute to social transformation is fostered. It will also feature some of the community projects the studio has developed to bring awareness to HIV/AIDS and other important social issues. Works by renown South African artists, such as William Kentridge, Bevan de Wet, and Mostamai Thabane will also be on view.
