LNG Dual Fuel inland shipping

The Argonon in operation

Raymond Gense

Manager sustainable development PON

Small Scale LNG, December 2012

Environmental issues are a great challenge for inland shipping

Proposal for Phase IV engines

CO [g/kWh]

HC [g/kWh]

NOx [g/kWh]

PT [g/kWh]

Solution 1

Exhaust gas aftertreament

• High investment • Large setup on board • Increased running cost (Ureum)

• Increase of CO2 Emissions • No return on investment

Solution 2

Natural gas as fuel

• High investment • Retrofit for existing engines possible • Low running cost (fuel, maintenance) • Low CO2 Emissions • “CCR” Flame point <55oC not allowed • Return on investment • Already good experience in truck segment

Total cost savings

• 25 % on fuel

• Amortization in 3 to 6 years!

• 35 % harbor tax reduction

And : future proof

Gas oil price will increase further!

Expectation for 2015 gas oil price?

September 2012 : € 720,71* per ton Future (experts): 2015 (low case +25%) : € 900,00 pro ton 2015 (mid case +50%) : € 1.080,00 pro ton 2015 (high case +75%) : € 1.260,00 pro ton *PJK Bunker price

Reduction in full

operation: • 56 ton NOx

• 2 ton PM

• 1000 ton CO2

Dual Fuel in inland shipping

• Essential step towards CCR 4

• Using a widely available and continuously cheap fuel

• With the perspective of CO2 neutral Bio LNG

• For newly build and Retrofit

• With „CCR“(Strasbourg) and „ADN“ (Geneva) approval

• But yet only as „Pilot“

• Lacking official EU legislation/approval for:

• Sailing

• Bunkering

Next steps?

• Increase of the LNG “test“ fleet (>10), to: • Gather practical experience • Optimize legislation • Develop a bunkering network

• Not only for „Dual Fuel“, but also “Full LNG“ and “LNG Electrical“

• And in many different installation configurations • Europe wide alignment on bunkering regulations

(NL has several active projects)

Climate change is global, the solution starts local!
