Raz:Joan, you hold the Hoffman Process in highregard as a mind/body healing program, and acouple of years ago you founded the Claritas In-stitute for Interspiritual Inquiry. Whats its purposeand what is the connection between the Claritaswork and the work at the Process?

Joan:The two programs are complimentary. Clari-tas is the Latin word for clarity or illumination. We use it to describe the state of transparency inwhich the ego is set aside and the inner Light isrevealed. Then the universal flow can reveal itself asspiritual guidance, because were free to perceiveit. The Process helps a person attain that state ofinterior freedom, where you can bepresent to what is without the at-tachment and desire that habituallyobscure inner clarity. The innate Lightwe each discover in the Process is thesame thing we try to bring forth in

Claritas. At the Claritas Institute, peopletrain to become spiritual compan-ions. Many spiritual traditions sharethe notion of walking the spiritual

journey, which is very much a mys-tery, with a spiritual companion.

Raz: So it requires that a person have completeopenness to where the spiritual path leads.

Joan:Father Thomas Keating said, This is a jour-ney into the unknown. So if you think you knowwhere youre going, youre on the wrong road.

When youre in the present moment whenyou dont know what will happen but are willing tostay with the path as it unfolds you connect to alarger reality. Thats when joy, compassion, and anauthentic sense of purpose spontaneously arise asguidance from the Spiritual Self. This journey hometo true nature erodes narcissism through the recog-nition that were all interconnected. The exquisitetenderness of heart, and the willingness to helpothers that results, is absolutely revolutionary.Raz: So a spiritual mentor helps another personknow themselves in a way that they cant normally

from within, by reflecting back to that persontheir own inner journey toward the Light?

Joan: Thats exactly right. And what they reflectback is essence or true nature, and the movementof spirit in their life. Rather than mirroring back theegos story, the art comes in learning how to mirro

back the souls story to light up the inner meaning of daily experience thats often hidden. Thisprocess has been called tuning in to the vector oflove the ultimate reality behind appearances.

Raz: How is spiritual mentoring different fromcounseling with a member of the clergy?

Joan: Its not problem oriented, itsoriented toward the movement ofspirit, toward the emergence of essence. You can think of it as twopeople listening for the presence ofa third.

Raz:Is it based on specific religionstraditions, cultures, or faiths?

Joan:We are the Claritas Institute foInterspiritual Inquiry because wereinterested in interspirituality, a termcoined by the late Brother WayneTeasdale. Wayne was both a Catholic

and a Hindusannyasinwho was interested in thedeepest level of interfaith conversation in learning to respect the differences between traditionswhile simultaneously orienting toward the essentiaspirituality they share. Its like the parable of blindmen describing an elephant when each is holdinga different part. The trunk is as real as the tail, butwhen you open your inner eye, its clear thatyoure describing parts of the same larger whole.

    Raz:Beautiful.

Joan: So if youre a Sufi and Im a Jew and weshare the moment when were deeply connectedto the source of being, then we would absolutelyunderstand one another. Maybe some of our termi-nology would be different but we would know wewere standing in the same mystic heart.

Raz:So youre looking at the mystical or spiritual core ofHinduism, of Christianity, of Judaism, or Buddhism, andyoure seeing where we find each other in them.

Joan:Thats right. Religious differences continue to causeproblems throughout the world, but Wayne Teasdale be-lieved that in order for us to reach a higher order, wehave to understand our deeper commonalities and find

the mystic heart that we all share.Raz: At the Process we learn that every person has aspiritual self and whether male, female, old, young, rich, poor, whatever, the external differences are just that, ex-ternal. The Process lets people discern between the falseself and the true self, and once youve found that deeperself theres a way to live in it and be present for others.

Joan:Also, whats important is that the Process lets peo-ple know their false self better. Not only do you get toknow your true essence, but you see patterns that aremistaken for who you truly are. The knowledge of bothof those is crucial.

Raz: Some people view spiri-tuality as something that takesus away from life because theyview it as being out there, but youre talking about a prac-tical spirituality that connectsyou more to life, into a greaterawareness of self and others.

    Joan:Yes, absolutely.

Raz: I assume that a prereq-uisite for doing the work atClaritas is that a person must

understand what compassionis and have opened their heartin certain fundamental ways.

We have a wonderful Hoffman teacher, Ginger Buckley, whos been a Claritas student for 18 months in your Spiri-tual Mentoring Program. She said that shes come to seethat one of the ways to peace is through recognizing thespiritual traditions of others. She considers the spiritualmentoring program as her own practical step toward fur-thering peace in the world. That seems so right, becausewhen my intellect, emotions, body, and spiritual self areconnected, I am whole. Dwelling in my wholeness, Immore trustworthy, more confident, less arrogant, more

compassionate, and much more willing to see and ad-mit a mistake. When Im in my spirit Im moving towardsomething thats connecting me more to other peopleand I value that connection tremendously.

Joan: Absolutely! That was an excellent description ofspirituality. When we are interested in creating the spacefor deep listening deep understanding among people out of that, right action emerges.

Raz:When you listen deeply, the most practical meth-ods for resolution come about. When we come in witha preconception of another person or a group, we try to

impose our ideas on them. But youre talking about anintimate connection with life thats always surprising.

Joan:And new! Life feels alive and interesting becausewere open to the possibility and wisdom that unfoldswhen were present with others in this way. This is whathumility is, that kind of openness and fascination withlife and desire to listen deeply.

Raz:Its what allows us to both recognize cultural dif-ferences and find whats common among us. Whenyou get to the core, the experience turns out to be thesame. We have to be able to find the truth in the meta-phors instead of trying to make the metaphors factual. And when we do that, we find that we are all deeplyconnected.

Joan: Yes. One of the things that characterizes theHoffman Process is the feeling that somebodys listen-ing to me, respecting me, seeing me at my core. Whenthat happens, defenses fall and people enter theirhearts and they look at the other people and think,

My goodness, wouldnt it be amazing if we could sitdown with ordinary people, fromdifferent countries that may notbe in agreement, and simply getto speak about whats most im-portant to us and just listen toeach other? I truly believe thatideas would emerge that wecould not have thought of, any ofus, alone.

Raz: Joan, I love where youregoing with your Spiritual Mentor-ing Program because it seems tobe an extension for a number ofpeople whove done the Process people who want to more closely discern and fol-low their spiritual intuition, their spiritual self. Its a bigstep for you to say to people, Im going to help youdo this.

Joan: Its probably the biggest commitment Ive evermade a calling in the classic sense. And its been hum-bling a recognition that when you answer the callof your spiritual self, something larger works throughyou. Were having a great deal of fun in the midst of it,which tells me that were on the right track!

Raz:Please tell us more about the program.Joan:There are three parts the first is about our ownpersonal inquiry, what aligns us to the source of being, what it means to be present, and what gets in the way.The second part of the program concerns discernment:How do we know when its our ego and when its ourspiritual self directing our choices? The third concernsengaged spirituality how we bring our full humanityto the world. Our students are getting in-depth training in how tobe spiritual guides or mentors by participating in their

One of the thingsthat characterizes the

Hoffman Process is thefeeling that somebodylistening to me, respect

ing me, seeing me amy core. When tha

happens, defenses faland people enter their

    hearts...

    BOOKREVIEW: SOULOFMONEY

The Soul of Money, the thought-provoking best-sell-er that explores how our relationship with money and not the accumulation of it affectsthe quality of our lives, is now available in pa-perback. Its author, Lynne Twist, is a Processgraduate, global activist, fundraiser, and theco-founder (with her husband) of The Pa-chamama Alliance. Lynnes book examines money from all an-gles how we earn it, use it, and spend it,and how and why we give it away. Through-out, the reader is encouraged to look closelyat his or her relationship with this universally

coveted and misunderstood form of currency. Lynne demonstrates that how we interactwith money is often similar to how we behavein other areas of our lives and in relationships. Do wecome from the perspective of abundance or scarcity?

Do we give of ourselves freely and with trust in a never-ending supply of love, compassion, and goodness, or

do we withhold our feelings and affectionbecause we believe in a limited supply? The Soul of Moneybeautifully illustrates thatwhen money is directed toward the thingsthat honor our deepest personal commit-ments and core values, we project our spiritualtruths into the world. When financial contri-butions are not possible, Lynne promotes theconcept of committed philanthropy, whichteaches us that service, giving our time, at-tention and intention to the causes that most

closely touch our heart and soul is how wemake the world a better place. The Soul of Money(W.W. Norton, $18.95 in

Visioning is a Process tool that encourages you toask your heart, soul, and spirit what they trulywant. When you vision, you commit yourself to beingin alignment with your Spiritual Self rather than with

the goals that are driven by your patterns. Here are the steps for creating a vision of your life:

    1. Create a comfortable, peaceful space where youwont be distracted.

    2. Choose the areas of your life on which you wantto focus.

    3. Envision, without limits, what your heart trulywants for your life.

    4. Once you have your vision, check in with yourheart. Are you satisfied? Are you disappointed?

Now adjust your vision until it includes everythingyour heart desires.

    5. Say out loud, I choose this vision for myself.

    6. Acknowledge your current reality; be honest about

where you are presently.7. Hold the awareness of both your vision and your

current reality. The tension that exists between thetwo can resolve in favor of your vision as long asyou are willing to acknowledge both.

Write out a description of your vision in the firstperson, present tense, as though it exists right now.

GO AFTER YOUR VISION!Once you are alignedwith spirit, you are supported by the Universe, andyour vision can be far better than you thought! n

Cheshta Buckley, a Process teacher with more than 11 years of Hoffman teaching experience, wasrecently chosen as the new dean of faculty of the Hoffman Institute Foundation. His term begins im-mediately and lasts until January 1, 2010. Cheshta succeeds the Institutes first dean of faculty, Anne Simon-Wolf , whose vision and accom-

own spiritual mentoring process; and then, during thelast year of the program, by mentoring others. Whilethats scary at first, learning to step aside and let spiritdirect the process is positively exhilarating, extraordi-nary to watch. Directing this program and seeing the transforma-tions in our students and myself has been thegreatest privilege Ive ever had. And because Claritasis an ongoing community of inquiry and practice, weget to continue the journey together after each classgraduates. Im just loving this interfaith, interspiritualcommunity.

Raz:We need more of that in the world. So many peo-ple get isolated in their own religious tradition that theybelieve, whether publicly or secretly, that theirs is theone that will triumph over all others. Instead, we canfind a way not simply to tolerate others but to celebrateall paths to God.

Joan:Its fun to learn the language of other traditionsand to begin to say, Oh, theyre talking about thesame thing but in just a different language, from a dif-ferent culture. I realized that if youre willing to listento the others language, you get to the place beneath

language, when its so clear that were standing on ex-actly the same ground, talking about exactly the samething. The only thing that varies, really, is the languageand that we tend to ask ourselves, What could bemore different than a Buddhist and a Catholic?

Raz:When were talking about language, were us-ing the word metaphorically. Its not literally French orEnglish or German, its that each religion is a languagefor talking about mystical and spiritual experiences. And so as you explore those different languages youfind that they all elaborate the same profoundly hu-man experiences.

Joan:Two hot areas being explored in the area ofmind/body research around essential spirituality is thepower of both gratitude and forgiveness. Whateverthe tradition, we can all agree that theres a fundamen-tal shift in perception when youre grateful, and thatforgiveness is perhaps the most radical of all spiritualteachings because through it we develop empathy andcompassion and bring forth a different way of seeingthe world. And of course it sets the forgiver free. TheProcess is a great place to learn that because you cometo this essential forgiveness with your family of origin.

Process Teacher Sharon Kennedy loveddance from the time she was a child. Shestudied classical and modern dance, witha focus on the Martha Graham technique. While dance was a passion from an early

age, so were psychology and spirituality. Shecombined these interests and earned a B.S.degree in Dance and Dance Therapy at theUniversity of Wisconsin, and a Masters de-gree in Dance Therapy at Hunter College inNew York City. Sharon practiced as a psychotherapist and dancetherapist in New York for several years. During this timeshe completed a three-year certification program in Psy-chosynthesis, an approach to personal growth and self-realization that combines psychology and spirituality. Itwas during this training that Sharon met Linda Hartka-Reiss. Surprisingly, both Sharon and Linda would later

become Hoffman Process teachers. After leaving New York for Massachusetts, Sharonand Linda formed a therapy-consulting group. I wassearching for a breakthrough way of doing therapy, something that would result in a quantum leap inthe therapeutic experience of healing and growth,Sharon said. During that time, much to her surprise and horror, Sha-ron noticed that some of her behavior with her daugh-ter Katy was similar to how her mother had treated her.I had done lots of different things during the previous

20 years and had made a lot of progress, butthere was a part of me that just wouldntbudge. I had a sense of being imprisonedsomehow, a deep feeling of being stuck andof self-hatred.

While fighting her intellect all the way,Sharon experienced the Process in 1993.Thank goodness I let my deeper self getme to the door.

When asked what she got from theProcess, she responded: I got a miracle! I no

longer hated myself I learned to love myself, whichwas astonishing. The sense of movement and freedom Iexperienced by stepping out of my own prison is whatI lovingly call my divinely choreographed experience. The great challenge was met. Sharon has been a Process teacher since 1995. I getnourishment and huge satisfaction experiencing oth-

ers getting free, breaking out, loving themselves, andmoving forward in their lives. Teaching is like being amidwife, supporting others to experience themselves ina way they never have, to realize that there is more tothem, the world, the universe than they ever knew. Sharon shared an experience she had when Katy wasseven. She asked, What is it that you do, Mommy? Sharon replied, I teach people to love themselves. Katy stopped and looked at her mom quizzically.People dont love themselves? Sharon thought, AWESOME! n

Raz:Thats absolutely true. To change course for a minute youve written 12books, many of them are best sellers. Are there plansfor another one?Joan:My husband, Gordon Dveirin, and I are writing abook called The Golden Compass, about spiritual guid-ance. It will be out in October.

    Raz:Whats its premise?

Joan:For the book, we interviewed 27 spiritual leadersincluding Rabbis, Priests, Sufis, Buddhists, Hindus, Sha-mans, and Quakers. And we asked this amazing panelof spiritual friends 12 questions about spiritual guid-ance: What blocks it? What encourages our opennessto it? What is the role of community? Do they thinkthat our earth globally is evolving? Are we evolving to-wards something good? One of the most fun questionswe pose is, If given the chance, what would you tellworld leaders? I think its going to be quite a delightfulbook that looks at the nature of how do we find ourdirection in this world in a way that helps us to contrib-

ute to the world becoming a better place and humanbeings becoming more fully human.

Raz: It sounds fascinating. And from my perspective, evolutionary.

Joan:Yes, were evolving, we truly are, and thats animportant thing to know really know when thenews in the world is bad. Dont give up heart. Out of thechaos something more compassionate, coherent, and

harmonious can arise if we all do our individual parts.Raz:Thank you, Joan. Well look for your book inOctober, and I speak for the entire Hoffman commu-nity when I say that you and your work, and your con-tributions to making the world a better place, continueto inspire us and make us proud.

    Joan:Thank you!
