Historical Overview on How Concrete has Changed the World

World of Concrete Trivia Question #1

What is the World’s earliest example of concrete in use in construction?

World of Concrete Trivia Question #1

Yiftahel is located in Northern Israel about 15 miles east of Haifa and 5 miles west of Nazareth. The archaeological remains are embedded within the eastern bank of Yiftahel Valley and are estimated to cover at least 7.4 acres. This particular site is likely the oldest permanent village ever found, and it has a number of concrete floors. So how long can the service life of concrete be? How about 9800 years.

World of Concrete Trivia Question #1

Researchers examined 2-inch-thick, two-layer floor samples from a building at Yiftahel and found compressive strengths of 1-inch cubes to be 4900 psi for the base layer and 6500 psi for the combined base plus the finish coat. Chemically, the samples consisted of nearly pure calcium carbonate (carbonated lime) and a small percentage of silica, attributed to sand. The base layer had porosity and crystal sizes suggesting it rough compaction, while the finish layer was dense with very fine crystals, suggesting it had been wet and well troweled.

World of Concrete Trivia Question #1

This larger section of floor shows one of the various crack patterns for the concrete floors at Yiftahel. Subgrade under the concrete was compacted with smooth surfaces allowing for movement in the concrete as shrinkage occurred. When all these cracks occurred will never be known. They could have developed at any time for the past 10,000 years.

StructureScan Mini XT is ideal for locating rebar, conduits, post-tension cables, and voids. The Mini XT can help identify structural elements, including pan deck and concrete cover, and provides real time determination of concrete slab thickness. Additional accessories for the StructureScan Mini XT include an extension handle with control button options, and the LineTrac XT. The LineTracXT adds the ability to detect AC power and induced RF energy present in conduits.

Innovations in Inspection and Assessment

Post-Tech® PT Corrosion Evaluation is a non-destructive test method that can assist engineers and building owners in the assessment of cable conditions. Post-tech PT Corrosion Evaluation is used to estimate the degree of moisture within the cable sheath which correlates to the risk of post-tension corrosion.

Post-Tech PT Cable Break Detection utilizes a magnetic field to detect cable breaks and defects in post-tensioned and prestressedconcrete structures. After the cables are magnetized, breaks are detected with sensors and state-of-art software.

3DR worked with the construction team to use Site Scan numerous times, capturing imagery that enabled them to analyze the placement of PT cables and rebar on their map and overlay their original blueprint so they could see how placements compared to their initial plan:

The imagery from Site Scan can also be overlaid onto site plans and shop drawings, helping avoid costly errors and omissions in the field.

Giatec iCOR™ benefits from the patented CEPRA technology that makes it possible to estimate the corrosion rate of rebar through a non-invasive approach. This means that the need for connecting the device to the rebar (which is the case for other commercial devices) is eliminated in iCOR™.This makes iCOR™ the most convenient corrosion rate measurement device in the field as well as offering an innovative research tool for laboratory studies.

The RABIT™ bridge inspection tool features two NDE technologies that can identify corrosive environments: electrical resistivity and ground penetrating radar (GPR). that discovers when rebar starts to corrode and concrete begins to crack and disintegrate.

Bridge Decks

Delamination is the beginning of division and separation of layers of a concrete bridge deck, weakening the bridge deck and making it more susceptible to the environment and traffic loads. The RABIT™ bridge deck assessment tool’s impact echo system, ground penetrating radar, high-resolution imaging, and GPS capabilities precisely locate delaminated areas to enable bridge owners to make the right repair decisions.

Seismic Retrofits

Grouted Splice Sleeve (GSS) Connectors

A repair technique for precast reinforced concrete bridge column-to-footing and column-to-pier cap joints constructed with GSS connectors has been developed. The repair utilizes prefabricated carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) shells, epoxy anchored headed mild steel rebar, and non-shrink concrete to relocate the column plastic hinge. Prior to the repair, undamaged column-to-footing and column-to-pier cap joints constructed with GSS connectors were tested to failure under a quasi-static cyclic lateral load. The as-built column plastic hinge region was subsequently repaired, and the repaired joints were tested following the same cyclic loading protocol as the as-built specimens. The plastic hinge was successfully relocated to the column section adjacent to the repair. The repair method is simple and rapid and could be used to repair bridges constructed with joints utilizing GSS connectors. The method is general and it shows promise for retrofitting or repairing bridges constructed with conventional cast-in-place joints as well.

Dowel Bar Repair

Dowel bar retrofit (DBR) is a load transfer restoration process that delivers a renewed level of structural strength to Portland cement concrete pavement (PCCP). The process involves placing load transfer devices across transverse joints and/or cracks to prevent heavy faulting, pumping, and/or corner breaks. The load transfer mechanisms generally consist of two, three, or four round dowel bars placed parallel to the centerline in the primary wheel paths.

Ultra-High Performance Concrete

UHPC is a steel fiber-reinforced, cementitious-based material that provides exceptionally high mechanical and durability related properties. The mechanical properties of UHPC allow for the redesign of connection details in ways that simplify the detailing such that the overall bridge layout and the manner in which the bridge is fabricated and constructed can be improved.

Repair Technician Certification

Concrete Surface Repair Technician (CSRT) Certification Program.

The new online certification program was developed based on industry demand and code language. The new ACI 562-16, “Code Requirements for Evaluation, Repair, and Rehabilitation of Concrete Buildings” outlines repair inspector qualifications for the inspection of concrete repairs, and designates an individual who has been certified as an ICRI Concrete Surface Repair Technician – Grade 1, as a qualified inspector.

The Concrete Surface Repair Technician Certification Program is a competency-based program using current best practices for online training and evaluation. The Educational component is presented and tested online while the Performance component is tested both online and assessed by observable criteria.

Emerging Repair Materials & Techniques

Repair Technician Certification

Concrete Surface Repair Technician (CSRT) Certification Program.TIER 1Tier 1, ICRI Concrete Surface Repair Technician Educational Program, consists of five (5) online training modules. Those who successfully complete this portion of the program, including passing all five (5) online training modules, will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement from ICRI.TIER 2The full certification program, Tier 2, ICRI Concrete Surface Repair Technician—Grade 1, consists of the same five (5) online training modules in Tier 1, an online knowledge exam, and a performance exam (video submission or live recorded). By passing the five (5) online training modules, the online knowledge exam, and performance exam, an ICRI Concrete Surface Repair Technician—Grade 1 certification will be issued by ICRI, and the individual will receive a certificate and wallet card. The individual can also be added to the ICRI Certified Concrete Surface Repair Technician database on the ICRI website if desired.
