You may have seen in the local press that Matthew

Coxon has had to change the name of his fabulous deli, kitchen and cookware shop in Saltaire, due to a trademark error, however, Matthew was determined to make something positive from the situation and asked his customers and members of the public to help him choose a new name. Cheese and Chutney was a joint effort and has given Matthew the opportunity to re-launch his business with new areas of speciality, increasing his range of chutneys to over 100, all sourced from local producers. Plus his very own homemade coleslaw which is so good, trying to find out his recipe has become the main focus in Saltaire! There are some really exciting things planned at Cheese and Chutney, with ‘Cheese and Chutney of the Month’, ‘Recipe of the Month’, monthly special offers and tasting events to introduce you to cheeses, chutneys, speciality olive oils and vinegars, breads and wines.

If you would like details for all of these and also to receive news of the official launch date for Cheese and Chutney, email Matthew at

Based in Bingley, Warmfloors Ltd. are local specialist suppliers and installers of electric underfloor heating

throughout the UK. They are a young, pro-active and forward thinking company, originally founded in 2004 by their current directors, who still have a hands on approach today. Electric underfloor heating has mainly been directed at the DIY market, but with the ever increasing legal obligations that need fulfilling during installation, making use of a professional installation service can often avoid the many headaches self installers come across. Underfloor heating provides an ideal

air temperature profile in your room through the correct balance of radiant and convected heat. With traditional heating most of the heat is convected air, which rises making the ceiling a very warm and wasteful place. However 50% of warmth from electric underfloor heating is radiant heat, which is absorbed by the people and objects in the room. Radiators can be an ugly nuisance taking up valuable wall space in a room. They

can cause discolouration and peeling of paintwork and wallpaper, and placing

furniture in front of them can block a great deal of the heat, making them ineffective. Electric underfloor heating requires no maintenance

except for an electrical inspection every 10 years which is tied in with domestic electrical inspections. Radiators are considerable dust collectors and give off moisture levels which support dust mites. Electric underfloor heating removes any chance of dust mites with zero moisture content and no dust collection – welcome news for asthma sufferers. No radiators in your home means no risk of injury to little children burning themselves on scorching hot radiators, and bathroom floors are kept dry, reducing the risk of anyone slipping on the tiles. Warmfloors Ltd. are the only ISO9001 supplier and installer of electric underfloor heating in the UK; using Scandinavian cables which come with a lifetime guarantee, and they have already installed hundreds of systems across the country. Warmfloors underfloor is suitable for Karndean, Amtico, tiles, laminates, engineered woods and carpet.

Call today for your free estimate and be warm and safe in your homes this winter.

Warmfloors sales and technical support lines are open until 9.00pm Monday to

The Greenhill Action Group was originally formed in 1992 by a group of local residents opposed to a proposal to build a ‘Dales Village’ on the open green fi elds bounded by Sty Lane, Micklethwaite Lane, the canal, Oakwood estate, Fairfax and Falcon Road areas of Bingley. This was defeated.

Bradford Council is now doing a review of the UDP (a legal requirement). The fi rst revision was issued in mid-2001, with the Greenhill site again zoned for housing although it was scheduled for release in 2008 because the Government now requires previously developed land to be used fi rst. The site is described as having ‘access constraints’ - to access the lower part of the site a swing bridge will be built over the canal, which will mean the canal will be closed for 6 months. This 40 acre site could accommodate up to 800 houses, and the impact on local roads, especially Micklethwaite Lane, Oakwood Drive, Falcon and Fairfax Roads and Beck Lane, and on services such as schools and health services, is all too painfully obvious. GAG is non-political and is solely

opposed to development on a green fi eld site which is the only green lung for residents in the Bingley / Crossfl atts area. If you would like to be involved, see our diary of meetings below.

> 2nd December - Crossfl atts & Micklethwaite Neighbourhood Forum meeting at St Aidan’s Church (2:00pm)> 7th October - Bingley Neighbourhood Forum meeting at Bingley Art Centre (7:30pm)> 22nd September - Eldwick and Gilstead Neighbourhood Forum meeting at St Wilfred’s Church (7:30pm)

Spring is the perfect time for home-owners to get their house in order and this usually includes the one job that is constantly overlooked... the over-worked oven!

Even the most enthusiastic of Spring cleaners fi nd donning rubber gloves and tackling the oven one of the most loathed household chores, and if people are not thorough with their oven cleaning, fat and food can cause future problems which could result in an oven fi re and it’s also a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and germs. This is where Ovenu comes to the rescue! Owner, Richard Greenwood, runs the local franchise of Ovenu, the UK’s most prestigious oven cleaning company, and his is a true family business as four of his team of six oven cleaning technicians are members of his family. Richard said: “People don’t realise that the more you use your oven the more debris and grease starts to build up and this can

affect its effi ciency. Remnants of food could still be lurking in the oven, hiding behind the panels, behind the fan cover or even dribbling over the heating elements in those hard to reach places.” The whole Ovenu process takes around three hours and leaves the oven, hob and exterior in immaculate condition. So call Richard today to arrange for that most hated cleaning job to be taken care of so that you don’t have to!

Free Roof Surveys Will Save You Money!

REMEMBER IF YOU ARE UNSURE ASK A PROFESSIONAL ROOFING CONTRACTOR TO PROVIDE YOU WITH A ROOF SURVEY AND QUOTATION. THESE ARE USUALLY FREE OF CHARGE. A REPUTABLE

COMPANY WILL ADVISE YOU ACCORDINGLY OF THE WORK THAT IS REQUIRED AND OFFER A GUARANTEE FOR ANY ROOFING WORKS THEY COMPLETE.

What to Look For

Debris on the ground from broken slates, tiles or defective mortar could indicate that there

may be a problem.

If you have missing tiles or slates, have them reinstated before damage occurs to roof felt,

timbers or plaster ceilings.

Moss, leaves and other debris can block gutters and cause the overfl ow of guttering which can cause damp to penetrate when running down the walls or to back fl ow into the roof area.

Moss retains moisture which may damage the roof covering, particularly if left on the roof

in frosty weather, careful removal is advisable and treatments are available to slow down

reformation.

Hips ridges and fl ashings can become detached in windy weather if pointing is not maintained.

Look in gutters or gullies for signs of mortar droppings.

Leaning chimneys or pots may need attention, seek expert advice.

Where a fuel fi re is used check for smoke exiting through brickwork or at base of pots. Pointing and re-fl aunching may be required.

Many roof coverings such as lead or thatch require specialist repair. Do not use unskilled labour or quick-fi x materials as these could

cause greater long-term damage and greater expense.

Many of us neglect to appreciate how important it is to maintain your home’s roof in good condition. It is diffi cult to see, we

are not roofi ng experts and we think it is most likely to be expensive. In truth the roof plays a vital role in keeping your house watertight and warm and should be inspected once or twice a year to ensure it continues to provide this important role.

How to Check Your RoofMost checks can be done from the ground level, binoculars can be helpful, a neighbour’s property may also be a useful vantage point. Inspection through the loft access trap may show daylight penetration possibly caused by missing covering or damaged fl ashings.

It is not advisable to attempt accessing and surveying the roof yourself as this presents many hazards. It would be recommended that a reputable and experienced roofi ng contractor carry this on your behalf as they would have the suitable safety equipment. A good roofi ng contractor would generally carry out this quotation free of charge and then recommend any necessary works.

IF YOU CHECK YOUR ROOF AS ADVISED, PREFERABLY BEFORE THE INCLEMENT WEATHER IN THE WINTER MONTHS, YOU WILL POTENTIALLY PREVENT WATER PENETRATION CAUSING DAMAGE WITHIN YOUR PROPERTY AND SAVE YOURSELF MONEY.

Bingley ShowWhat a Great Day Out at the Bingley Show

Bingley ShowBingley Show has always been extremely popular with people travelling from all over the region to attend and this years’ event was no different.

This was much to the relief of the organisers as with the extended closure of Ireland Bridge, it was thought that exhibitor numbers may be down, however the bridge re-opened just in time and with a fabulous day of weather; Bingley Show experienced another triumphant year! New to the main ring was a crazy clown feature, which entertained the kids and adults alike. For older children the motorbike display team were back, a popular spectacle and the noise and thrills once again wowed the crowds; added to this the old favourites, the sheep dog display, falconry, heavy horses, and a riding for the disabled demonstration, plus many more attractions, made a great day out for all

the family. Titan the Robot was once again the main draw for children, and he also made an unexpected appearance at the Airedale Agricultural Society Lunch, which went down a storm with the dignitaries, Titans cheeky charm winning everyone over! Personally our favourite attractions were the sheep shearing Australian with the dancing sheep, who also educated his audience as to the reasons why sheep are sheared – he brought out the child in everyone in a very clever and entertaining way. There were also some marvellous old cars on show, each having been lovingly restored and kept in pristine condition by the owners. I absolutely loved the Bubble Car which brought back fond childhood memories of riding around in my elderly Auntie’s many years ago. I would love to get my hands on one now! The prize bulls on show had to be seen to be believed, huge muscular beasts so ripped they would have given Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime a run for his money, and they were in their

element being groomed and pampered in readiness for their audience and judging panel. There was so much to do and see, it’s easy to understand the passion people have for Bingley Show, and that’s not just local people as many travel from far and wide for this excellent day. Next year the show day has changed to a Saturday so watch out for details and make sure you purchase your tickets early to avoid queuing at the gates. You will also save on the ticket price by buying them in advance.

Most people know obesity is on the increase, and so are all the medical conditions associated with it. What you may not realise is that being just three stone overweight classifi es you as being clinically obese and this can affect self confi dence, fi tness levels and more seriously, according to fi gures released by the NHS puts you at an increased risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension and cancer. Obesity is estimated to shorten your life by an average of nine years. But you no longer have to be another statistic thanks to Lighterlife.

Lighterlife is a unique weight loss and weight management programme that has been designed specifi cally for men and women who have a BMI of 29 and over, and the programme has successfully helped thousands of people to make lasting changes and enjoy happier, healthier lives. The medically monitored programme was developed over a decade ago by three professional women with personal experience of obesity who wanted to offer a lasting solution to the familiar phenomenon of yo-yo dieting. It is the only national weight-loss and weight management plan that looks beyond food to examine lifestyle and emotions in order to help clients break the weight loss/gain cycle. Christine Smith runs Lighterlife meetings in small groups of people. The nature of the weekly groups is extremely supportive and clients can also make additional visits to Christine if they feel they need a little more support. And the support doesn’t stop there. Once the target weight has been achieved, the qualifi ed Lighterlife counsellor re-introduces clients to conventional food slowly, and educates you on healthy choices in order to maintain your

weight loss and new fi gure for life. “There is more to weight loss than eating less and exercising more. If it was that easy everyone would be slim and healthier. That is why Lighterlife uses a powerful combination of very low calorie nutritionally complete soups, shakes and bars, which enable fast and effective weight loss, along with counselling techniques which include cognitive behavioural therapy and transitional analysis to examine the thoughts, feelings and behaviours that have led clients to become overweight.” Christine Smith, Lighterlife Counsellor in Shipley.

Here at MAD Publications, we absolutely love it when we discover someone who offers a unique service that is perfect for all start up businesses and businesses wanting to move to the next level. So we were absolutely ecstatic to come across Andy Thompson and his brilliant concept TooCan!

For any business needing a ‘knock ‘em dead’ website without the usual massive financial outlay for design and hosting, Andy is the man to speak with, for reasons we will go into shortly. First let’s tell you a little about Andy and how TooCan came into being. Andy studied mechanical and production engineering after leaving school and found a passion for designing products that offered a solution to everyday problems, a passion that grew during his time working for a plastics engineering company after he finished his apprenticeship. Then through a chance meeting he was introduced to some people who worked in the security industry and he started to develop security systems and solutions for protection to high risk corporate organisations, including solutions for such as anti-terrorism. This line of work took Andy all over Europe, however after a family bereavement, he decided on a change of direction, going back to his roots developing, manufacturing

and marketing his own products. To date Andy has sold over one million products that he has personally designed, manufactured and marketed and he has two products currently in development which are almost ready to market; one is for the security industry which will be launched under a new brand called Ko-Ko, and one for consumers, both are being kept tightly under wraps until completed as the volumes Andy anticipates selling run into literally hundreds of thousands. As part of the process and the marketing mix when launching his products, Andy has developed many of his own websites, some as promotional sites and some for direct sales. Along the way he has regularly been asked for advice, and he realised that he could provide the something unique for start up and small businesses requiring a website as an essential part of their marketing mix and strategy, without the usual expense of a professional web designer and avoiding the pitfalls of trying to design your own site, which can result in something very unprofessional and ineffective. TooCan offers a no-risk and very low cost web presence, a site designed specifically to fit each individual business needs plus ongoing support and advice, marketing and networking ideas...and all from £5 per week!

Yes that’s correct; it’s not a typing error! That’s why we approached Andy after seeing his branding and marketing for TooCan. Having met with him to find out more, we were bowled over by his work ethic and passion to help local businesses succeed. To give you some idea of how quickly Andy can work for you, TooCan took just one week to develop from concept to marketing, designing, setting up his total brand, his website and securing his first five customers! This could be happening in your business. It has been a successful year after opening Popular Hair in Bingley for Katie Jones, and Lucy Cottle of Envy Beauty Studios, has now teamed up with Katie to open a beauty salon within. Lucy has now also successfully opened her second salon in the area and is going from strength to strength.

Katie and Lucy met four years ago while working n a salon together, instantly becoming friends. And after Lucy opened her first salon in Crossflatts three years ago, Kate also then followed her dream and opened her own hairdressing business at Popular House in Bingley. The two salons complement each other perfectly, offering a wide range of all hair and beauty treatments and products. Lucy also employs Steph Barr, both working between the two beauty salons. Steph also qualified as a hairdresser last year and has also taken on the role of junior stylist working with Katie at Popular Hair part time. Lucy trained Steph in the salon, running her on job training alongside her college training, to make sure that Steph met her own high standards of service and customer care. Lucy explains, “Training for me means in-salon training as well as gaining a college qualification. It’s not something that can be done overnight, it’s a long journey on which you grow and

develop as a therapist. Steph’s achievements have been fantastic in the two years she has been with us and she now helps to run both salons. I’m sure this will continue as she further progresses into the hairdressing field with ongoing training from Katie.” Both Katie and Lucy enjoy training and developing Steph and are looking to further increase their team next year with another therapist and hairdressers chairs to rent with Katie.

Food lovers can enjoy fresh food straight from the fi elds as Riverford brings its Travel-ling Field Kitchen restaurant in a yurt to its farm in Yorkshire this summer.

The Travelling Field Kitchen has been touring the UK since May and comes to Home Farm in Newby Wiske near Northallerton between 5-15th August to serve lunches and suppers for the public. Riverford on Home Farm is the fastest-growing vegbox scheme in the country and delivers its fresh produce to customers across Yorkshire and the North East. The Travelling Field Kitchen is based on the original award-winning Riverford Field Kitchen restaurant in Devon, where Sunderland-born head chef Jane Baxter has been cooking up a storm since 2005, taking what is best in the fi elds and transforming it into a feast of gutsy fl avours. The menu works with the fresh produce that is in season during the summer months and picked from the surrounding fi elds at Home Farm.

Below are examples of the sorts of dishes you can expect to enjoy.

Seasonal summer desserts

Andrew, who delivers Riverford boxes to homes throughout North & West Yorkshire said “We are on a mission: to get Britain using fresh, seasonal vegetables again. The Riverford Travelling Field

Kitchen is about giving people the chance to taste veg at its very best and get some practical help in how to cook at home. Although seasonal produce is very in vogue, we think that after 40 years of neglect very few people have the culinary skills to eat this way. We want to show people just how exciting cooking from scratch with seasonal produce can be and inspire them back into their kitchens.”

Tickets are available for two course lunches at £17.50 and three course suppers at £22.50. To book your place call 01803 762062 or visit www.riverford.co.uk/homefarm.
