This guide continues a centuries’ old tradition by celebrating food that’s bought, sold and consumed in and around the market town of Newton Abbot.

Today there’s the sad fact that the tables of local residents rarely see any of the produce from the rolling farmlands that surround the town. Instead much of the local produce is sucked into a far-off economy where the links in the food chain – from producer to retailer to consumer – are increasingly anonymous and distant.

This guide is part of a movement that aims to reverse this trend. We know that you can find great tasting food that is produced close to the town. This guide will help you to find it, or where you can sell it locally.

The guide has a three-fold purpose. It will give consumers the information they need to make local choices. It will help businesses to source their ingredients and products from local farmers, growers and processors. And it’ll make it easier for local producers to identify where they can sell their products – to shops, to cafés, restaurants and B&Bs, as well as directly to the public.

We believe that Newton Abbot has a bright future as the centre for south Devon, in which food has a central place. By buying “local”, you’ll find great tasting food transported with tiny food miles. You’ll also help to support those producers who’ve staked their livelihood to our beautiful countryside. And by selling locally you’ll be meeting a growing demand for high quality food that makes a minimal impact on the environment and pays a fair price for it.

This guide starts a journey. It marks the first part of the road to a more self-sufficient local economy that delivers high-quality products that everyone can access. But in the meantime enjoy the food!

A version is now available on-line which will always be kept up to date with new information and new entries. We are dependent largely on you, our readers, to pro-vide us with new information to add to our lists.

Important note: the listings information is solely for locally produced food. Most of the businesses listed also sell food produced outside our area, but these non-local products are not mentioned.

Brimblecombe’s cider is made in the old fash-ioned way where milled apples are pressed through straw and the juice ferments with wild yeast for approx. six months. The juice is then raked off and put into oak casks to mature. The press we use was installed about 350 years ago. The cider barn at Farrants Farm used to be a farmhouse and dates back to Saxon times.
