LOCAL GROUP VISITS ALL THAT IS DOWNTON ABBEY

Recently, St. Francis of LBI along with Home Town Travel sponsored a private group tour revolv-ing around the PBS series, Downton Abbey. In conjunction with the tour of Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey), we were fortunate to experience some Downton extras. I met Lady Fiona Carnarvon, she manages the affairs at the castle, including overseeing its grounds and gardens and many of the special events. She was helping in the kitchen when she agreed to take a photo with me. We also visited little town of Bampton, which serves as the series’ central location. Al-though it was raining, we happened to be there while they were filming for next season. While watching and getting as close as security allowed, Allen Leech (Tom Branson, widow of Lady Sybil Crawley) walked toward us. He was charming and also posed for pictures. The Downton Era was also experienced by visiting the Victoria and Albert Museum, where fashions of the time were explored along with the British Museum with its splendid display of Egyptology and all thing King Tut. It was the current Earl’s grandfather, who along with Harold Carter actually dis-covered the tomb of Tut in Egypt. The Cabinet War Rooms and Blenheim Palace just made the trip that more interesting. This was a trip no true Downton fan will ever forget.

Nancy’s NotesThe saying goes ‘better late than never’ but I was genuinely sur-prised at the early arrival of my first granddaughter 4 weeks early. Mom, Dad and Claire Addison are all well and she is so cute! Every grandmother says that, I am sure. Michael graduated, Magna Cum Laude, with his Masters in Hospitality and Tourism from Drexel University and is working at the Courtyard Marriot at the Univer-sity of Delaware where hospitality students train while schooling. He is also a senior adjunct instructor at Burlington County College. Nothing like keeping busy.

NIGHT OF CASH – The annual fundraiser for Rotary next year will be held at Calloway’s on April 17th at 6:00PM. For those who do not know about this event which raises money for local scholar-ships, there are only 300 $100 tickets that are sold. For your $100 you get a buffet dinner and two drinks. As if that wasn’t enough, it is a reverse raffle so if your ticket is the last one left in the barrel, you could walk out of there with a check for $10,000. There are other cash prizes along the way. Pretty good odds as far as I’m concerned and the money raised stays local and supports our high school stu-dents. There is also a Chinese Auction and a 50/50 that was almost $1,300 and was won by Marie O’Hara from Little Egg last year.

We will be doing a promotion with WBNJ (91.9FM) Unforgettable Oldies. Listen to them and find out about the cruise give-away with MSC Cruises for a winter escape.

This year Home Town Travel was the official travel agent for the Garden State Film Festival in Atlantic City. Honorees included LAURA DERN who received the Independent Spirit Award along with Margate’s own, screenwriter SCOTT NEUSTADER and BEBE NEUWIRTH, best known for the role of Lilith on NBC’s Cheers, for which she received two Emmy Awards; who received the Wave of Excellence Award. In addition, LT. GOVERNOR KIM GUADAGNO was honored with the Impact Award for Promot-ing Business & Arts Alliance in New Jersey. If you are interested in attending this spectacular event next year, it will take place from March 19-22, 2015 in Atlantic City and more information can be found at www.gsff.org. Congratulations to all the winners.

Calling all NJ Devils fans (and Philadelphia Flyers fans)-Rotary will also be doing a fundraiser to the Devils-Flyers game on Sun-day, March 8th at 5:00PM at the Rock. If you are interested, more information will be available soon.

TWO IMPORTANT NOTES

I have had many calls recently on groups very close to the depar-ture dates and everything was either sold out or space had to be returned to the operator. If you see something you would like to do, please call a.s.a.p. to avoid disappointment.

If you would prefer to receive our newsletter via email, please send us a note with your email address and we will forward it to you elec-tronically. SAVE A TREE!

Until next time,Nancy

Ken and Elaine Bayne returning to the Viking Bragi after an amazing day in Passau, Germany!  What a wonderful cruise. Many thanks to Home Town Travel for putting together the trip of a lifetime!

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for putting together a wonderful Disney vacation for my entire family.

As you can see from the picture, all 10 of us were having a great time. Your sugges-tions for the proper Disney Plan, hotel, restaurants and must-see events/rides/exhibits were all excellent choices.

As always, I enjoyed working with you in making this a reality and a vacation that none of us will ever forget. The entire seven days were wonderful thanks to you.Take care and congratulations again on becoming a Grandmother. I’m sure you will be visiting Disney soon!

This was the first time we have taken a group tour.   Mike generally prefers to drive and make all his own reservations. Caravan to Panama was an outstanding first experience.   The food and accommodations were first class at every stop. The bus was comfortable (even for Mike’s long legs). The lack of restrooms on the bus was not an issue because there were frequent stops. We got incredible up close views of the Canal and its mechanisms as well as local sights and scenes. Mike feels we saw a much better view of the Canal than we would have had from a cruise ship. Oniel Valdes, our tour director, was very knowledgeable regarding all aspects of the Ca-nal and its history; the history and culture of Panama; and, the economics of the areas we visited. Time schedules were adhered to very closely. There were none of the “Panama time” delays. We did pick the wrong weekend to begin our tour. It seems that every five years there is a Presidential election on the first Sunday of May. All alcohol sales are prohibited from noon Saturday until noon Monday.

We will definitely use Caravan again if they happen to have a tour in an area we want to see.

ATTENTION FOODIESThe 10 Best Caribbean/Mexican All-Inclusive Resorts For Food – 2014

Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup Package

Sandals LaSource GrenadaIt’s the newest resort on this list, but it’s quickly earned the top spot for 2014, with simply sensational food across nine restaurants, including Butch’s Chop-house, a first for the Sandals brand. Crucially, the property is making a significant push to source its food locally.

Zoetry Agua Punta Cana — Dominican RepublicThis property could best be described as a boutique-style all-inclusive, and the re-sort’s four restaurants are exceptional. Perhaps more importantly, you never need to make a reservation at any of them — truly a luxury at a Caribbean all-inclusive.

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana — Dominican RepublicReturning to the Best All-Inclusives for Food list this year is the terrific Hard Rock, which has nine restaurants that are diverse but equally delightful. It’s big and brash, to be sure, but the Hard Rock delivers in the culinary department.

Grand Velas Riviera Maya – MexicoThis Riviera Maya institution helped redefine what people expect from all-inclu-sives when it comes to food. Grand Velas has eight restaurants, ranging from clas-sic French to Asian, under the supervision of top Spanish Chefs Bruno Oteiza and Mikel Alonso.

Galley Bay — AntiguaPerhaps Antigua’s signature all-inclusive resort, this Elite Island Resorts property has four restaurants from fine dining to casual beachfront fare, all served with equal quality and attention.

The Caves Negril — JamaicaThis Negril classic is part of the Island Outpost collection, which means it’s as good as it gets in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. The cuisine here emphasizes local sourcing and local flavors, meaning you get a real taste of Jamaica (not to mention unlimited servings of Blackwell Rum, made by Island Outpost founder Chris Blackwell). And yes, you can arrange dinner inside a cave.

Couples Swept Away — JamaicaAnother gem in bohemian Negril, Couples Swept Away has a wide selection of restaurants, from the elegant Feathers restaurant to poolside Thai eatery Lemon Grass. All in all, it’s worth the trip just for the food.

Sivory Punta Cana — Dominican RepublicThis Dominican Republic resort emphasizes what it calls “art cuisine,” and the minute you are served it’s easy to see why. From the Mediterranean Laveranda to the international Gourmond, Sivory raises the needle in a big way.

Spice Island Beach Resort — GrenadaWith just 32 rooms, this Grenadian jewel is on the boutique side, but the food is world class, at both the property’s Sea and Surf Terrace and Bar and its flagship Ol-iver’s Restaurant, which beautifully emphasizes the richness of Grenadian cuisine.

Secrets Maroma Beach — MexicoThis Mexican Caribbean resort truly has it all — gourmet a la carte eateries, a buffet and casual fare to boot. And it also, thankfully, never requires a reservation, meaning you walk in and enjoy spectacular food from regions around the world.

Join the herd at the Annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup the last Friday of September. Feel the thunder as cowboys and cowgirls round up and drive the herd of 1,300 buffalo. Not only is the roundup a spectacular sight to see, it is a management tool in main-taining a strong and healthy herd. After

the roundup you’ll watch the crews brand, sort, and vaccinate the herd in preparation for the fall sale. Your day also includes stops at Crazy Horse Memorial and Mt. Rushmore National Memorial.

The folks at the Farmers’ Almanac can be forgiven for feeling smug: The 198-year-old publication correctly predicted the past nasty winter while federal forecasters blew it. Memories of the polar vortex and relentless snowstorms won’t soon be forgotten. And the editors of the publication are predicting more of the same for the coming season.

“Shivery and shovelry are back. We’re calling for some frigid conditions, bitter conditions,” said managing editor Sandi Duncan.

The latest edition forecasts colder-than-normal and wetter-than-usual weather for three-quarters of the country east of the Rocky Mountains. Drought-stricken California, along with the Pacific Northwest, will see normal precipitation and cool temperatures this winter, the almanac said.

The publication, not to be confused with the New Hampshire-based Old Farmer’s Almanac, uses a secret formula based on sunspots, planetary positions and lunar cycles for its long-range weather forecasts. Modern science doesn’t put much stock in the formula.

As the health and well-being of our guests and crew is of the utmost im-portance, Norwegian Cruise Line will institute changes to its smoking policy for all sailings on or after November 1, 2014. The specific changes prohibit smoking on stateroom balconies and limit smoking in the casi-no to players. On Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway, smok-ing on The Waterfront will be permitted on the starboard side, except by the outdoor dining areas.

Public areas throughout all our ships are smoke-free. If you smoke regular or electronic cigarettes, you can do so in designated areas only. If you pre-fer pipes or cigars, you can smoke in the Cigar Bar or designated smoking lounge. Smoking cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars and pipes is per-mitted in outdoor public guest spaces and open decks where designated by the ship’s management based on the ship’s specific characteristics and arrangement. Smoking, including electronic cigarettes, is prohibited in or near venues serving food, the jogging track, outdoor sporting venues, The Haven outdoor areas and children’s pool areas. On ships with The Waterfront, smoking is permitted on the starboard side excluding any food service areas. Active Casino players may smoke cigarettes in the Casino during gaming hours. Cigarette smoking is not permitted in any other indoor venue or location.

Guests are not permitted to smoke cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars or pipes in their staterooms or on their balconies. Cigar and pipe smoking in staterooms and on balconies is prohibited. Smoking inside your state-room or on your balcony will result in a $250 cleaning charge added to your onboard account. If cigarette burns on furniture, linens, towels or carpeting are detected; guests will be advised and charged for the dam-ages.

Electronic cigarettes cannot be used in public areas where there is a No Smoking policy in force; simply because these cigarettes look so realistic and therefore other guests’ perception is that we are not enforcing the No Smoking rule.

Checked bags, onboard food, the ability to pick your seat, seat upgrades... As long as revenue growth continues like this, expect the airline industry to not only maintain their ancillary fee programs but to also find new and innovative ways to charge passengers even more.

Airlines made a whopping $31.5 billion globally in ancillary fees last year accord-ing to a new report, up 11 percent from the $28.1 billion they earned in

2012 and up more than 1,200 percent from 2007, gen-erally considered the year ancillary

fees first began.

“What began as a trickle has grown to a flood,” the report stated.

To be fair, the totals for ancillary fees do include such things as affinity credit cards. But the worst part for fliers?

“We have a fair amount of room to grow yet,” said Jay Sorensen, the president of IdeaWorksCompany, a Wisconsin-based airline consultancy which helps airlines find and implement new revenue streams.

IdeaWorksCompany and CarTrawler, a rental car services company, commis-sioned the survey, which includes data from 59 airlines. Leading the way is Unit-ed Airlines, which brought in $5.7 billion in ancillary fees last year, more than double the No. 2 airline, Delta, which earned $2.53 billion. American Airlines came in third with $2.1 billion.

But nowhere are ancillary fees more important as a revenue stream than at Spirit Airlines, famous – or infamous, depending on how you look at it – for its low fares but numerous add-on fees. Ancillary fees accounted for 38.4 percent of Spirit’s total revenue last year, according to the report.

Spirit made $51.22 per passenger on ancillary fees.

Sordevolo’s Passion Play(September 13-22, 2015) Every five years, a small hamlet nestled against the Italian Alps comes to life to tell the story of Jesus Christ. Sordevolo, in the region of Piedmont, is the host for La Passione Di Cristo (The Pas-sion of Christ). The play, illustrat-ing Jesus’ later life from when he arrived in Jerusalem until his Res-urrection, has run every five years since 1815, and will celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2015.

Sordevolo is one of only three cit-

www.hometowntravelinc.comies that host such an event. Other hosts include Oberammergau, Germany (where arguably the most famous Passion Play occurs every 10 years) and Kuopio, Finland. Legend has it that Sorde-volo vowed to host the play after being spared from the plague in 1634. The actors put on 31 perfor-mances in 97 days, as the show runs every weekend from June 6 to September 27, 2015.

During the performances, the town’s population of about 1,300 doubles, as the 4,000-square-meter outdoor amphitheater can seat 2,500. The play involves the entire community, which spends nearly a year preparing for the event. About 400 locals perform, while 300 more serve as crewmembers backstage, making costumes, or designing the set; many specific acting roles -- played by everyday citizens, not professional actors -- are passed down through the generations.

Sordevolo ‘s play still uses the original script, written in 1500 by Giuliano Dati in an ancient Italian dialect called Laudi. Dati, a native of Florence and a chaplain of a church in Rome’s Trastevere neighborhood, used the scripts for the Colosseum’s annual Good Friday performance of the Stations of the Cross, which was held until 1539. The play is not only written in the ancient language, but also per-formed in it, presenting a challenge for both locals and visitors to follow.

The amphitheater recreates a section of ancient Jerusalem in 33 A.D., using the city’s streets as the setting for places such as Cal-vary (Jesus’ crucifixion site) and Herod’s Palace (where Jesus’ trial was allegedly held before Pontius Pilate). In 29 scenes, the perfor-mance depicts the most important and most famous moments from Jesus’ life, including Judas’ be-trayal, the Last Supper, and Jesus’ burial and Resurrection.

Hometown’s tour will include airfare into Rome and out of Milan, eight nights’ accommodations, buffet breakfast daily five dinners, sightseeing including local guides and entrance fees, touring by air conditioned motorcoach, porter-age, hotel taxes and current air taxes. Cities visited will be Rome, Assisi, Orvieto, Padua, Biella and Sordevolo. Final pricing should be available the end of November. If you are interested, a $100 fully refundable deposit is required. Please call Nancy for more infor-mation or reservations.
