Our summer weather isn’tusually unbearably warm; infact it is often pretty cool and alittle bit of extra heat would bevery welcome. With a little bitof planning and some carefulplanting, you could turn yourgarden into the hottest site out, regardless of the real weather. You can plant to create a massof hot colours. All you haveto do is plant beds, bordersor containers full of hot reds, screaming yellows and glowingoranges. True, most of theplanting is best done in theautumn, but a visit to a gardencentre at this time of year willreveal a fabulous display ofplants which can be put togood use in your garden now.For real energy and vibrancy, choose plenty of yellows andgolds, including some of thegolden rods (Solidago), whichshould be flowering well intoSeptember.I am a great fan of coreopsis, including the various forms ofCoreopsis verticillata, whichflowers well into the autumnand is unlikely to need staking. If you like to see flat lookingflower heads in your gardenthen take a closer peepat some of the achilleas, including ‘Coronation Gold’.No late summer border iscomplete without the cone
flowers or rudbekias with theirdeliciously bright, daisy-likeflowers - these should last youthrough October. For some screaming scarletsand other shades of red, consider growing the dahlia‘Bishop of Llandaff’, Crocosmia‘Lucifer’, Lychnis chalcedonica. In damper areas you coulduse Lobelia ‘Queen Victoria’or many of the other moisture-loving types of lobelia whichproduce huge spires of redflowers, so different fromthose tiny blue, pink and whitebedding lobelias which aremore widely grown. To make sure that yoursummer time plantings do well, take heed of the following tips:• If it’s a hot day, try to plant
in early evening or at leastlate afternoon when themain heat of the sun hasdied down.
• Always make sure thatplants are really wellwatered before you putthem in the ground.
• Soak the compostthoroughly and make surethat it’s wetted right to thebase before you begin.
• Incorporate plenty of bulkyorganic matter, such asgarden compost, well-rottedmanure or some proprietary
compost from your gardencentre, as this will help toretain moisture.
• Once the plants are inposition, water them inthoroughly - the waterneeds to go right down towhere the plant needs it, atits roots.
• Once the soil is moist, applya good, deep mulch of2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm), allaround the soil surface. Thiswill help to keep moisture in,protect the plant roots fromthe heat of the sun and atthe same time keep weedsat bay.
Don’t forget to tend to your hotborder again in the autumn, when you will find smallversions of many of theseplants readily available ingarden centres, often at onlya couple of pounds per potand when you will also be ableto plant some more warmingoranges and reds using bulbsand corms.

If you’re looking for a fun, easy andinexpensive hobby this summer, why notconsider kite flying? Not only will it meanthat you’ll be spending more time outdoorsin the sunshine, it’s a great way to meetnew people as there are at least a dozen kitefestivals a month in the summer all over thecountry (www.kitecalendar.co.uk).
We have two Chinesephilosophers to thank for theinvention of the kite morethan 2000 years ago, whoused readily available silkand bamboo, although legendsuggests that a Chinesefarmer beat them to it by tyinga string to his hat to keep itfrom blowing away. The first kites were generallyrectangular and flat ratherthan bowed and were oftendecorated with symbols andpictures as well as whistlesand strings. They had anumber of uses includingcommunication in militaryoperations as well as testingwind speeds, measuringdistances and even liftingmen. Kite flying was thenspread to Japan by Buddhistmonks, onto India where theywere used as ‘fighter kites’in specific festivals and toPolynesia, by this time madefrom cloth and wood and usedin religious ceremonies. It was the famous traveller ofthe 13th century, Marco Polo, who first brought stories ofkites to Europe but it wasn’t foranother 300 years that kiteswere regularly brought back by
sailors, returning from Japanand Malaysia. Eventually, scientists and researchersbegan to realise their potentialfor experiments – BenjaminFranklin, Alexander Wilsonand Thomas-François Dalibardused kites to learn more aboutwind and the weather whilstAlexander Graham Bell andthe Wright Brothers used themto aid in the development ofaeroplanes. In World I and II,kites were used for observationand signalling. Nowadays, their use is mainly recreational.Kites are stronger, lighter andmore colourfully decoratedthan ever before. So, how do you become anexpert kite flyer?1) Learn the best wind
conditions - mostexperienced fliers suggestbetween 5 – 25 miles perhour which means plantsand leaves will be movingbut not blowing aboutfuriously. A flag or windsockis a useful guide.
2) Find a clear, open areasuch as a field or park – thebigger the space, the moreline you can let out and themore fun you’ll have movingyour kite across the sky.Make sure that you stayaway from roads, powerlines and airports and neverfly in rain or lightning.
3) Lay out the kite and lines onthe ground before you start- check all connectors andbridles and make sure thereare no knots or tangles.Ensure you have around 20to 35 metres of line and thatthey’re the same length onboth sides.
4) Launch by steppingbackwards and pulling bothhandles to your side andcontrol the kite by pullingthe lines – left will make thestunter turn left and viceversa, whilst holding themeven will fly straight.
5) Be careful of other people– if you do tangle lines, walkslowly with the other flier toslide the tangle down theline of the kite where it canbe more easily unwrapped.
You can spend as little as afew pounds on a kite or if thebudget allows, as much asa couple of hundred. Whoknows? With a little practice, you might develop a new talent

sufferers in Macclesfield and surrounding
areas, born through the chance meeting
of four individual sufferers.
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition of
widespread pain and profound fatigue.
The pain tends to be felt as diffuse aching
or burning, often described as head to
toe. It may be worse at some times than
at others and may also change location.
usually becoming more severe in parts of
the body that are used most. The fatigue
ranges from feeling tired, to the
exhaustion of a flu-like illness. It may
come and go and people can suddenly
feel drained of all energy - as if someone
just “pulled the plug”. It is a common
illness, more common and sometimes
even more painful than rheumatoid
arthritis. People with mild to moderate
cases are usually able to live a normal life,
given the appropriate treatment but with
severe symptoms, people may not be able
to hold down a paying job or enjoy much
of a social life.
