horse training and formalstudy, is offered throughYouthreach, a programme runby the City of Dublin Educa-tion and Training Board(CDETB).“In fact, I never sat on a horse
before,” young Jordan recallsnow.
The Round Tower, Clondalkin is shortlisted for Heritage and Built Environment in Local Government awards
The 7th Century Round Tower, at the heart of Clondalkin Village, is among the best preserved Round Towers in Ireland. The Visitor Centre was conceived by South Dublin County Council in collaboration with the Office of Public Works andthe local community to celebrate the Tower and to respond to the history of the site. The centre comprises the con-servation and refurbishment of five derelict 19th Century Mill Cottages with a modern extension to the rear, newgardens to the front and rear and with a new civic plaza to re-engage the site with its historic core. be a 3-year-old ofKarl’s. I’m sure every-one had heard of thisfilly. Hopefully shecan train on fromlast season, as shewas a lovely horse.[Laurens won five ofher last seven races, progressing from 7 to10 furlongs. — Ed.]Havana Grey

Domestic violence refersto the use of physical, emotional force or threat of physical force, andincludes sexual violence. Domestic violence legislation protects
spouses/civil partners and children and offerslegal remedies in case of Domestic violence. Italso gives An Garda Síochána powers to arrestwhere there is a breach of a court order. The Court can make the following orders.Safety order: A safety order prohibits the
person against whom the order is made fromengaging in violence or threats of violence. Itdoes not oblige that person to leave the familyhome. It prohibits them from watching or beingin the vicinity of where the person applying forthe order and dependent children lives. if theperson against whom the order is made doesnot normally live in the family home,Barring order: A barring order requires the
person against who it is make, to leave thefamily home and stay away from person apply-ing for the order and/or dependent childrenand can include terms prohibiting the personagainst whom it is made from using or threat-ening to use violence. Once a Domestic Violence summons or Civil
Bill has been issued by the person applying forthe order or orders, they can apply for a pro-tection order or an interim barring order whilewaiting for the application to be heard in court.Protection order: This is a temporary order.
It gives protection to the person applying forthe Domestic Violence order or orders until thecourt decides on a application for safety or bar-ring order. It will only last until the case is heardand a decision made. It does not oblige theperson against whom it is made to leave thefamily home.Interim barring order: This is a temporary
barring order. It is intended to last until the bar-ring order application is heard in court and adecision made. After an interim barring orderis made a full court hearing must take placewithin eight working days of the granting of aninterim barring order. The Court must be of theopinion that there are reasonable grounds forbelieving there is an immediate risk of signifi-cant harm to the applicant or any dependentperson if the order is not made immediately. Person who can apply for these orders, sub-
ject to certain restrictions and conditions thatmust be met. Spouses and former spouses;Civil partners;Co-habiting couples;Parents;Parents of children in common;Person living together, can apply for protec-
tion against someone over 18 who they are liv-ing with if their relationship is not primarilybased on a contract. Children may apply for or-ders but an adult or health board must makethe application on their behalf; The HSE mayalso apply on behalf of a person or that per-son's dependent children. Each category of persons, who can apply for
these orders, has certain conditions that mustbe met, depending on the type of order or or-ders being sought. It is important that a personseeking to apply for these orders seeks legaladvice. Domestic Violence applications can be com-

AN EXTRAORDINARY“live” attraction, involv-ing months of labour byfamous names fromfilm, theatre and design,is about to take the Lib-erties by storm.
The Vaults, on John’sLane (off Thomas Street)is the brainchild of film-makers Paul Blanchfieldand Gerald Heffernan, and writer/directorPeter Sheridan (brotherof Jim).
This is no ordinarystage-play.
In fact, it’s not a playat all, with live “diora-mas” being played outfor ten hours a day onfour storeys of an eye-catching, red-brick Vic-torian schoolhouse. It isset to open beforeChristmas, and is likelyto be by far the biggestsuccess in Irish stage

Insiders say spend inthe gift shop there aver-ages more than €80,suggesting a turnover ofsome €100 million plus.
Even half that suc-cess would make TheVaults, estimated tocost €4 to 5 million, ablockbuster — and Ire-land’s biggest employerof acting and backstagetalent.
However, in the lastfew days, the Blanch-field/Heffernan com-pany, FrontierEntertainment, has hitwhat accountant Cor-mac Mohan calls a“speedbump”. OLD SCHOOL: the emphasis will be on live scares, not giant screens
LOCAL HERO: Dublin’s most famous Count will join Molly Malone
JUDGEJust as The Vaults
was about to cross thefinishing line, Frontierwas put into examiner-ship. Local News under-stands that this movewas ratified a few daysago by Judge JacquelineLinane.
“We have everyhope that the attractionwill open, and soon. Webelieve the prospectsfor the venture are verygood,” Mr Mohan toldLocal News.
“This is an account-ing exercise, but TheVaults is primarily anartistic venture. Weneed it to work, finan-cially and artistically.”

This is taken as a sig-nal that the founders,Paul Blanchfield andGerald Heffernan, whoeach put €500,000 oftheir own money intothe project, will not besidelined.
It is believed thatjust €½ million is allthat is needed to “fi-nesse” the project, which is already largelybuilt and decorated.
Recent investorBarry Kenny, who re-sponded to thefounders’ appeal forfunds with a €1.2 mil-lion investment, had al-leged in legalproceedings that ashareholders’ agree-ment had beenbreached. Blanchfieldand Heffernan denythis.
However, with anamicable settlement MrKenny and the foundersshould all retain a sub-stantial share.

Miami Show Band – still seeking answersFORTY three yearsago last week, localman Tony Geraghtyof Stanaway Rd inCrumlin, was mur-dered in the MiamiShowband Massacre. The anniversary wasmarked by a wreathlaying ceremony inSundrive Park fol-lowed by a publicmeeting in theStoneboat Pub.
The events wereorganised in con-junction with theTruth and Reconcilia-tion Platform (TaRP)founded by StephenTravers, survivingmember of theMiami Band, and hisfriend EugeneReavey.
My involvementin these events cameabout because I hadchallenged in theDáil the appointmentof Drew Harris of thePSNI as our newGarda Commis-sioner. Harris has arecord of obstructingthe efforts of victimsof atrocities in theNorth, to get thetruth of events that
claimed the lives oftheir loved ones. Suchwas the case with theMiami ShowbandMassacre.
Following my in-tervention in the DáilI was asked by theTaRP to introduce thepublic meeting theywere planning. I wasproud to do so.

the Miamis, a youngshowband with no in-volvement at all in theconflict were drivingback from a gig inBanbridge in the earlyhours of 31 July, 1975.
On the road to Newrythey were pulled overby what appeared tobe UDR men. They gotout and were standingby the roadside whensuddenly the van ex-
ploded – instantlykilling the two ‘sol-diers’ ostensibly‘searching ‘ it.
One of the bandmembers, Des, wasblown into a ditch andout of sight. The ‘sol-diers’ then opened fireon the remaining four, seeking to eliminatewitnesses. They im-mediately killed three– Brian McCoy wasshot four times; FranO’Toole was hit by 20bullets mostly in thehead and had no faceleft; Tony Geraghtywas shot five times inthe back and twice inthe back of his skull.
Stephen received adum-dum bullet in hisback but miraculouslysurvived by playingdead.
Later it emergedthat the ‘soldiers’ weremembers of the UVFwith links to the noto-rious sectarian killers ,the Glenanne Gang. They were plantingthe bomb in the vanwhen it exploded pre-maturely – the plan
was for it explode onthe road, simultane-ously killing the bandand smearing them astransporting bombsfor the IRA.
Along with the hor-ror of their stories andtheir lack of bitterness, Alan and Stephen areunited in their beliefthat hidden behindboth atrocities wasBritish secret servicecollusion. For decadesthey and others havebeen blocked fromdiscovering the truthabout what happened.
This brings us backto Drew Harris. Whydid he help block theirsearch for the truth, ifnot to cover up collu-sion with State forcesin the killings?
And that in turnbegs the question:why, after all the prob-lems with successiveCommissioners andthe Garda Siochana asa whole , would any-one want to appointsuch an unsuitableperson as the newGarda Commissioner?

Cigarette site to see 1200 houses A VAST South CircularRoad site, stretchingbacking onto St Teresa’sGardens in The Liber-ties, may finally be de-veloped after lying idlefor nearly two decades.
The total site com-prises:
• the old John Playercigarette factory, closedin 2004
• the adjacent BaileyGibson print and pack-aging company
• the now semi-derelict St Teresa’s Gar-dens council estate offCork Street.
The land totalssome four hectares (tenacres), the largest hous-ing-approved tract ofland in the inner city. Itis, potentially, one ofthe most valuable tractsin the country, withroom for 1200 housesand apartments.
The company thatbought the John Playerland immediately afterthe factory closedfound itself in receiver-ship. A number of falsestarts have occurredsince then, with theproperty eventually
transferred to NAMA.Now, however, NAMA isbelieved to be workingwith one of its listed“preferred partners” todevelop the site.
The most likely can-didate, Glenveagh Prop-erties, is chaired by
former NAMA executiveJohn Mulcahy.
The Player site alonehas been previously val-ued at €22m, with Bai-ley Gibson worth a littleover half that amount.
However, if the totalsite is developed, the
value of the houses, apartments, shops andother facilities on thesite could reach justunder half a billion. Be-cause of the involve-ment of Dublin CityCouncil — owners ofthe St Teresa’s Gardens

estate — a substantialportion of the final de-velopment would in-clude social andaffordable housing.
Local News askedGlenveagh if they couldoffer any news as to thestatus of their planningapplication, if any, forthe site, but they de-clined to comment.
Should planningpermission be granted, building could start be-fore Christmas, with thefirst units available latein 2019.

Be yourown lifecoach!Clinical Hypnotherapist KIERAN FITZPATRICKadvises in his regular column onhow to achieve your goals.
In recent articles I have talked about Depression.I stress again that if you are feeling overwhelmedwith feelings of Depression, Anxiety, acute lowmood, despair or even suicidal thoughts, as withany health condition, go to your doctor and tellthem. They can quickly begin to treat these feel-ings to relieve them. And when they do, talk tothem about some form of talk therapy to help youget to the root of these feelings and remove them.
I previously noted how, luckily, most forms of De-pression although chronic are relatively mild andcan be greatly relieved by monitoring ourthoughts, ideas and beliefs and changing them.Even more acute forms of Depression can behelped in this way. And their roots can be traced, with help.
I talked about how we don’t generally keep trackof our thoughts. And what thoughts should we belooking out for?!
Well, psychologists in recent years have found themost depressing combination of thoughts. If youhave let your thoughts drift into this pattern it isvery likely to be major contributor to your prob-lems. But, the good news is, that you can changethese. And when you do, your mood changes forthe better. And all of us can benefit from watchingout for and changing this pattern in our thinking.
So what we are watching out for are “The ThreeP’s”! “Permanent”, “Personal” and “Pervasive”. Sowhat do I mean?
If you have a negative thought in your head andyou believe this problem or situation is somethingthat is Permanent. Then that is going to be a prettydepressing thought. “It’s ALWAYS wrong” or “It’llNEVER be okay”, for example.
If you believe the problem is specific to you be-cause of who you are, then this is Personal. Againit’s going to be pretty depressing to think some-thing is the way it is just because you are you. “Ifail.” or “It won’t work out for ME”.
If you believe that something applies to every-thing and everywhere, then it is Pervasive. And thethought that no matter where you go or who youare with it will be the same, is again a pretty de-pressing thought!
Now, they have found that a lot of people sufferingwith Depression have all of these Three P’s activeat once in their thinking, which moves things notalone from positive to pretty depressing, but toabsolute despair! How can you ever see hope in anegative situation that you see as Permanent, Per-sonal AND Pervasive?!
The classic example would be “Nothing (Perva-sive), ever (Permanent) works out for me (Per-sonal)! What a depressing thought!
The great thing about these absolutes is that theyare very hard to prove right! And if we can beginto (a) realise that we are thinking this way and (b)throw doubt on those beliefs, we can change ourthinking and thus our mood.
Let’s take the classic example above. Everybodycan think of a time when something worked outfor them, however small. So “nothing” isn’t trueanymore. And neither is “ever” (or “never”). Andif anything ever worked out for them, then thepersonal element isn’t true either!
Get looking for the 3P’s in your thoughts and seeif they’re actually true!

Residents challenge Disc Parking storyRESIDENTS KieranStenson and Alan O’-Cleirígh sat downwith Local News tomake a point-by-point case rebuttingour story on DiscParking in the Ri-alto/Herberton Area(Local News South,July 19).Their most power-
ful argument camebacked by an officialplan for the limitedyellow-lining of Her-berton Park. The map we show
here, based on Coun-cil sketches, showsthat it’s not a matterof marking off one
side of the road.Instead, the pro-
posed DiscParking/No Parking
areas will be staggered— with good reason,as Mr Stenson ex-plained:“One of the argu-
ments made for aparking free-for-all isthat on-street carshave a natural traffic-calming effect,” henoted.“This, as you can
see from the plans, isnot accurate.”Local News had pre-
viously understoodthat Disc Parkingwould effectivelywiden the street andcause rat-run traffic. As we argued:“With one side car-
free, reckless com-muters would speedthrough quiet, resi-dential roads — assome are alreadydoing.”However, by stag-
gering the Parking/NoParking stretches inthe way suggested bythe Council, impa-tient commuters arerobbed of theirthrough-run speed-way.
LINE OF SIGHTIn our report, we
also ignored the line-of-sight hazards cre-ated by the currentparking free-for-all.Now, children jump
out between cars ontothe open road. Visibil-ity could be much im-

by PAUL KELLY proved by designat-ing large tracts of theroad as No Parking(Yellow) Zones. What about cost?
Residents get theirown all-day-every-day permits, whichwe priced at €80. Weshould have made itclear that is thecharge per 2 years(with the option ofpaying for one year at€50). Both Mr O’Cleirígh
and Mr Stenson alsodealt with the notionof a “natural right topark” — and indeedthe need to park onthe street in somecases. However, they
pointed out that thedesign of the estate inquestion is crucial. As Mr O’Cleirígh
pointed out, most ifnot all of HerbertonPark houses haveparking spaces intheir front gardens. This contrasts with,
for example, thenearby Maryland es-tate where few if anyof the tiny front gar-dens could accom-modate a car. Thoughit should be remem-bered it is front gar-den and wasdesigned as leisurespace not a parkingspace.
NEW USERSAnother point
raised by the two res-idents, and by others,is that there are al-ready a wide varietyof users of the Her-berton Park and Roadon-street spaces. These include:• residents• visitors to StJames’s
• builders on StJames’s• builders on othersites
• medical staff in StJames’s
• local workersusing the road as“park and work”• city workers using
it as “park and ride”.All this will con-
tinue, but otherusers/abusers will beadded:• visitors to the newChildren’s Hospi-tal (NCH)
• medical staff inthe NCH
• again, more work-ers playing “parkand work”.
These new “parkand work” employeeswill include, for exam-ple, those employedby the soon-to-be-opened Medical Cen-tre nearby on SouthCircular Road; andthose working in thenew OAP centre(marked with a red
square on our map: itactually extends farbeyond that area). That means that a fi-nite number of on-street spaces will beused by a greater andgreater number ofpeople. This makes the case
for controlled use allthe more compelling.
OAPsOne final issue,
which Messrs Stensonand O’Cleirígh arguemay be the crucialone: mobility, espe-cially for the aged andinfirm.OAPs living in the
new centre will have
access to Rialto andSCR via HerbertonPark. Clearly, if thesepaths are currentlyblocked — as they arenearly every day —the issue will becomeworse as more work-ers arrive. Those with walkers
and mobility scooterswill simply be forcedout onto the road. Some locals, includ-
ing Paddy Lyne con-tinue to say that“most” Herberton res-idents are against thescheme. However, there are
two sides to the story. We have done ourbest to present both ofthem.
PARKING PROPOSAL: OAPs who take the route shown (red arrow) from the newly-built centre to the shops will be unable to get past cars parked half-up on the pave-ment. Disc Parking will discourage this practise
WALKING NIGHTMARE: only a very thin pedestrian could negotiate a this kind of gap!
BOTH SIDES NOW: how we reported the story in our July edition

They are essential for housing most critical sys-tems and are vital to the continuity of daily op-erations.
Whilst data centres do not create major fulltime employment, with facilities when opera-tional typically employing 30 people, they docreate substantial construction jobs stated Mr.Stagg.

rebuilding ireland loanscheme won’t help
middle income workersFIANNA FÁIL Leader of the Seanad and Spokesper-son for Social Protection has called on the Ministerfor Housing to address inconsistencies in the qual-ifying criteria for social housing and the RebuildingIreland mortgage scheme.
The Working Family Payment is currently clas-sified as income for the purposes of assessing eligi-bility for social housing. However, families in receiptof this payment are unable to apply for the Rebuild-ing Ireland Home Loan Scheme as it is not availableto those in receipt of social welfare payments.
Senator Ardagh said, “Excluding those who arein receipt of social welfare payments of all kind ismanifestly unfair and goes against the goal of the“rebuilding Ireland” program. The rebuilding Ire-land Loan Scheme was presented to us as a panaceato help those in middle Ireland who are unable toget finance on the private market”
“The rate of approval and uptake of the loanscheme is evidence that it is simply not working. This leaves many families in no mans land; they arejust outside the qualifying criteria for social housingand yet they still cannot apply to the Rebuilding Ire-land Home Loan Scheme. The Minister needs toaddress this anomaly as the current situation is notfair on families who fall between the two schemes,”concluded Senator Ardagh.

THIS YEARafter a few years away the Summer Festivalcame back to its original home in the KCR House .Thefestival kicked off with Rock and Roll Bingo with PaulRedmond on Wednesday followed on Thursday bymusic by The Legends..Friday saw the return of TonySwaines Charity Auction (he will get arrested sometime) with music by Adam Ryan, it never ceases toamaze me how generous people can be buyin, thoughin fairness there were a couple of real bargains asusual..Saturday brought us Dixer Day and friendlygrudge game of Pitch and Putt between the BlackHorse boys and the KCR gentlemen.Saturday nightbrought the Talent Contest with Mick McAvinue, an-other great night with some weird and wonderfullsingers, with Karl Morris victorious... The Festivalqueen was a very interesting event with some verystrang speeches by the contestants. The winner wasJennifer Gurley and big commiserations to Joe Faywho finished 8th of the 6 contestants.
Sunday was another packed night with Taffle andmusic by Tony Jones..All in all it was a great week lotsof craic and people giving money for a great cause; theHospice in Harold’s Crtoss. There was also a sponseredweight loss so a big thanks to Marto O Neill, Linda McDonnell and Tony Swaine, also to Joe Fay for his raffleon Sunday.Fair play to Tony and Noreen getting the
spot prizes and so much more and to John and Joanand all the staff of the KCR House and all the enter-tainers and especially to you the customers of the KCRfor your genorosity through out the week.Congrats toCarol McAvinue who celebrated 5 years cancer freeduring the festival. And finally a mention for KayByrne. Kay was involved with festival week for manyyears but unfortunatly Kay passed away this year andshe was sadly missed..Thanks again to everyone andhers to next year.Time to put the liver back in the box.
One sad note to finish, Anto Gurleys new little dogwent missing (presumed stolen) during the festival..Anto is very upset and not been able to sleep since...So if you have any information about his dog pleaselet him know.

New Sports Pitch forCommunity in Firhouse ON SATURDAY 25th August akick-off event with live enter-tainment, free BBQ for allguests, a football tournamentand family fun day will takeplace at the Church of Scien-tology & Community Centre inFirhouse, starting at 10:30amto inaugurate their newly re-stored football pitch. The Firhouse Centre opened
last October and has alreadyhosted over 100 communityevents and nearly 20,000guests, but the pitch could notbe used so far as the newly re-stored grass surface had to beallowed to grow and settle. The Church and CommunityCentre has now received thegreen light from its landscap-
ing professionals confirmingthat the pitch can be put backto use at the end of August.A number of local sports
clubs have already submittedrequests to use the pitch, many more unfortunatelythan the facilities can accom-modate. Preference is beinggiven to non-profit groupswhich contribute the most tothe local community.“Sports and general wellbe-
ing are paramount in today’slife style especially in a worldwhere drug consumption anddrug related crime seem to in-crease day by day. The pitchon our grounds gives us a wayto contribute to the commu-nity encouraging physical ac-
tivity, good habits and excite-ment” said Diana Stahl, Direc-tor of Public Affairs at theScientology Community Cen-tre.The Church has taken good
care of the pitch grounds sinceits acquisition of the premisesin Firhouse in 2017, in prepa-ration for this opening. Thepitch which measures 50x90mwas refurbished completelyincluding having a newdrainage system installed toallow its use throughout theyear so it can accommodateGaelic football, hurling, rugbyand soccer local clubs in mostweather conditions.
