Sterling Mattress Factory in Herrin, creates handcrafted mattress sets,Memory Foam sets, adjustable beds, liftchairs, custom-size mattresses, headboards, and accessories – simplyeverything you need for a comfortablenights sleep.

“The handcraftsmanship of ourmattresses sets them apart from mass-produced products and provides ‘old-fashioned’ value that our customers can’tsee, but it’s there,” Mike said. “Forexample, instead of using the standardone-and-half pound foam, we use two tofive pound. It’s a difference you reallycan’t see, but it raises the quality of ourmattresses.”

Mike said that the biggest trend todayis the no-flip mattress. Sterling however, offers both the newer no-flip and thetraditional two-sided mattresses, socustomers can have their choice.

Sterling mattresses are all in stock andready to go. No waiting. Custom ordersusually take 2-10 days; most less than aweek.

“We can produce a quality hand-crafted mattress for about the same priceor less than a mass-producing product,Mike said. “Yet, we put in the extra valuethat others don’t.”

Murdale True ValueMurdale True Value, located on

Carbondale’s west side has only onepublic entrance, but through those doorsboth professionals and do-it-yourselferscan find almost anything for practicallyany project.

The reason, says Murdale ownerGeorge Sheffer, is that the True Valuestore is more than just a single entity.

“We really have four differentstores in one,” he says. “That all adds tothe value our customers receive in price, service, selection and quality.”

Sheffer says Murdale is acomplete appliance retailer, a rentalcompany, a hardware store and a full lockshop with locksmiths. He says that thecombination of the four “stores” giveMurdale True Value a different approachto serving customers.

“If you are wanting to completepractically any project, here you can getthe expertise to make your job easieralong with the products and equipmentyou’ll need to do the job,” he explains.

Sheffer offers the example of ahomeowner who wants to paint hishome.

“A lot of places will sell youpaint, but what people really need toknow is that the job is not just aboutpaint,” he adds. “It goes back to theknowledge of how to do the whole job theright way. The preparation of the surfaceis key. It means using the right productsand the right applicators, too.”

To make the task even easier,Murdale’s rental department offerseverything from paint sprayers tomotorized lifts. Beyond painting andstaining, the same level of service, expertise and easy-to-use tools areavailable for a countless number ofprojects.

“We add value for our customersby helping them get the end results theywant,” Sheffer explains. “People need tounderstand that the true cost of a projectcan only be calculated when the project isall said and done.. That’s what sets usapart. We can help from start to finish. With us, the project is safe, easy anddone.”

He explained that thephilosophy of Murdale True Value is tomake things easier for the customer, notfor themselves.

“No matter what area or whattype of project it is, if you go to otherplaces you’ll see that they do one thing:

what they think is easiest for them. Forexample, when it comes to selling thingslike nuts and bolts or nails, they want toput them into packages because it is themost convenient way for them to ringthem up and keep track of how manythey sell. But is it easier for thecustomer?”

Sheffer points out thatcustomers can try nuts on to a bolt theybring in to the store to make sure they getthe correct size instead of having to guessthat the nuts in a package will fit. Also,Murdale will sell any number of manyfasteners and other hardware items.

“If you want to buy just one ortwo, you can buy just one or two insteadof a dozen or more,” he said. “Buywhatever you need. We’re not forcing youinto a package. It’s more of a customer-delight focus rather than just meetingtheir needs. It goes way beyond that in anice way.”

Customer service is plentiful inevery department of Murdale True Value. The store boasts the largest selection ofWeber grills and grilling accessories insouthern Illinois.

“We feel that we are dominant inthe grill business,” he says. “We have

expertise that most places do not have ingetting the most from your grill. Pluswe’re a Weber warranty service center, sowe can repair grills should they ever needit.”

The same goes for appliances.Murdale has a vast selection of majorhome appliances.

“We offer aggressive pricing onappliances, but our advantages don’t endthere. We don’t have all of the otherhidden fees that many other stores have.”

Murdale does not charge fordelivery or limit delivery just to the curb.

“We do standard installationcompletely free,” Sheffer says. “We’llcome, put in the new unit, take the oldone away if you wish and do anenvironmentally-friendly disposal of it.We’ve done that for years and it’s just aservice we do to take care of ourcustomers.”

Recently Sheffer heard from acustomer who asked a Murdale teammember in appliances for advice inconnecting a refrigerator’s ice maker. Thecustomer told Sheffer that the associatenot only educated him on how to do it, hewent with the customer to the plumbingdepartment to make sure he got all of the

correct fittings and tools for the job.“You come get the products you

need, so however you want to do aproject, we can help you. We have theexpertise and the equipment to do it,”Sheffer says.

Everyone at Murdale True Valueis proud of the way they treat theircustomers, but they are also proud oftheir communities. The store frequentlysupports local charitable and civicorganizations including Big Brothers, BigSisters and the Boys and Girls Club ofCarbondale. Recently, Murdale wasdesignated as one of the top five “YouthFriendly Businesses” in Jackson Countyby the Jackson County Positive YouthDevelopment Coalition.

“We try to be very involved inthe community. We care about ourcommunity,” Sheffer explains. “We livehere, we work here and we play here. Thisis not a stepping stone to somewhere elsefor us. Our kids go to school here, we planon retiring here. That’s why we try to puta lot back into the community. We try tohelp out organizations and we’ll even puton fun days so the kids can come hereand play for free. It’s all about givingback to the community.”

At first glance, you might think thatBrick House Living, located on Rt. 148 inEnergy is just another furniture store. You’d be wrong.

“We’re a lifestyle furniture store,”owner Michael Haege says. “That meanswe have more than just furniture. Wehave lighting, tables, accessories, rugsand more – basically everything for yourhome.”

Haege is a veteran in the furniture andinterior design industry, having workedfor both Havertys Furniture and PotteryBarn. Likewise, he’s no stranger toSouthern Illinois; his grandfather wasproprietor of the popular “Squire Shop”in Carbondale’s Murdale ShoppingCenter throughout the 1970s.

“Because we sell furniture for all of therooms in a home as well as rugs, lampsand accessories, we’ve had somecustomers completely outfit entire roomsfrom our store,” Haege says.

For their upholstery Brick House Livingoffers more than 80 different fabricstyles and colors, that is all made in theUSA. “We can give you exactly the styleand color what you want in an American-

made piece in approximately 4 weeks.”Haege says three points separate Brick

House Living from other furnitureretailers. First, every item is clearlymarked with an honest, everyday price.Second, Brick House Living offers athree-day, in-home guaranteed. Thatmeans even after you’ve had your newfurniture home for a couple of days, ifyou decide it’s not exactly what youwant, you can exchange it for anotherpiece or return it.

Third, you can count on the quality ofevery item at Brick House Living. Fromnew furniture to one-of-a-kindantiques, each piece has been handselected for quality and value.

All together, it makes Brick HouseLiving the perfect place to jazz up a roomor your entire home. “Most people aresurprised at what they find here. We’restylish. We have formal to casual torustic. And, we believe your furniture, especially recliner pieces, can havecomfort as well as style. You don’t haveto sacrifice one for the other. You canhave both at Brick House Living.”

Tired of those pesky, blood sucking mosquitoes?

We have the cure for you and your yard. It’s a new concept to use a child and pet friendly spray to create a barrier in your yard. After two barrier sprays we guarantee a virtually, mosquito free backyard. So stop wasting money on

candles and smelly sprays and call us today!

JoCo Pools – Mosquito Authority“After building pools for over 25 years,

it bothered me that my clients couldn’teven use their pools during certain timesof the day because of mosquitoinfestation. I am proud to offer a safe wayto rid yards of these pests” says JoeCohen, owner of Jo-Co Pools.

With warmer weather approaching, everyone is dreaming about their summerplans. Some will travel, some will visitrelatives, but many people choose to stayat home and enjoy their summer right intheir own backyard.

For those people, a backyard is a haven,a place where you can spend time withfamily and friends, barbecuing, swimming and playing fetch with yourfavorite companion. Nothing can wreckthose amazing plans like peskymosquitoes. Those nasty blood suckersnot only leave itching whelps, they alsocarry a host of diseases including WestNile, Encephalitis and Heart Worms. This year authorities have warned us thatthe mosquito population will be worsethan ever before due to the recent

flooding. In the past, your only defense against

these blood suckers was to purchasecitronella candles or to fumigate yourselfwith smelly insect repellent. Now youhave a choice over these traditionalmethods.

At The Mosquito Authority, we sprayyour yard, not you. Using a syntheticversion of the chrysanthemum plant, weapply a barrier spray to your yard onceevery three weeks, breaking the life cycleof the mosquito. After two barrier sprayswe guarantee that you will be able tovirtually have a mosquito free backyard. In fact, we are so confident in ourproduct that if you are bothered bymosquitoes in between sprays we willcome out and spray again free of charge.

Plaza Tire Marion

Plaza Tire Service, Inc. was foundedearly in 1963 by Mr. Vernon “Pee Wee”Rhodes. It was originally known as PlazaCar Wash., at that time doing businessstrictly as an automatic car wash service. The business did well except on rainydays. In order to shore up the company’sfinancial base, the business expandedinto an auto clean-up and detailingservice for local automobile dealerships.Along with servicing these vehicles, thecompany started selling tires to thedealers as they were needed.

The operation required a seven daywork week, using Sundays to purchaseretreads to be sold to the dealers. After awhile a retreader rented part of the carwash building, thus sharing the rent and

giving the company a convenient sourcefor tires. One year later the retreader metwith financial disaster and Plaza CarWash, Inc. purchased his operation fromthe bank. A 1964 one ton Chevrolet truckwas included as part of the purchase.

This truck was the beginning of the tirewholesale route business, for whichretreads were distributed outside thelocal area. In 1967 the business startedpurchasing and selling new tires. Thefirst brands sold were Gates Rubber and BF Goodrich. The first Dayton Tires werepurchased in 1967 with an opening creditline to the company of $10,000.00 with apersonal guarantee. At that time thisamount could almost buy a trailer-loadof tires.

The business continued to grow andsoon the company had three route truckson the road, a car wash operation in fullswing and the retreading shop working atnight. It became necessary to purchase atire changer to do local business and itwas mounted on the sidewalk outside ofthe car wash. All tire changing jobs weredone on the street using a jack. Due tolocal regulations the system for tirechanging jobs on the street had to behalted. At this time a choice had to bemade whether to remain in the car washbusiness or to go strictly with the tires.

On Labor Day 1968, all the car washequipment was removed from thebuilding and the first Plaza Tire Service

Locally and family owned since 1964, Wright Do-ItCenter has stayed true to its roots of an excellent, knowledgeable and hard-working staff and friendlyservice. Founded by Jim W. This location at 208 South WilliamsStreet in Murphysboro, Illinois is where theMurphysboro store still resides today.

In 1968, Jim Wright decided to go it alone and, with afresh new look, Wright Building Center was born. Thestore has always been a family affair, with Jim’s wifeLaura, father John, son Jerry, and daughter Kathy allhaving been part of the business. This sense of family isalso prevalent with all of the employees, many of whomhave been with the organization more than 20 years. The store expanded in 1984 with an additional locationopening in Sparta and, shortly afterward, a full-servicedrive-thru lumber yard was added to the Murphysborostore. In 1994, Wright Building Center changed its

operating name to Wright Do-It Center, reflective of itsstrategic association with Do-It Best brand.

A small business that began with a handful ofemployees has grown to two locations and over 80employees. What’s the biggest benefit they offer theircustomers? Wright Do-it Center partners with itscustomers from start to finish, and buys them time withexcellent service and prices that empower both do-it-yourselfers and contractors to do things right the firsttime. Jim was part of the 1947 MurphysboroTownship football team that holds the record for beingundefeated and un-scored on. He feels that the successof Wright Do-it Center is the direct result of a spirit ofteamwork and the talented employees who bring apositive attitude to work each and every day.
