Norman Carpet One, opened by Gene and Pauline Norman in 1963, is a second generation family owned business. They have been serving the flooring needs of Southern Illinois for over 50 years and as a Hunter Douglas premier dealer for over 20 years.

The business, is still family owned, by Brian and his wife Becky who took over after Gene retired from the partnership in 2007. Their son, Tyler, also works in the family business.

Brian Norman grew up in the family business.

“I remember being five or six and following behind my dad, picking up carpet scraps,” Norman said. “By 14 I had my own crew and went to installer schools at the minimum required age of 17.”

That experience, along with great customer service, great value and their excep-tional guarantee has made

Norman Carpet One a leader in the industry.

“We were invited to join the Carpet One cooperative in 1996,” said Brian Norman. As a coop-erative, with over 1,000 stores in our buying group, we can get great value and service from the best flooring manufacturers— and pass the savings on to you.”

Along with value prices, Nor-man Carpet One has the greatest selection of flooring and win-dow treatments in the area.

As a family business, Brian, Becky and Tyler are “hands on” when it comes to Norman Car-pet One.

“Our family not only sells flooring and blinds, our fam-ily also installs them,” Norman said. “We are the only store in Southern Illinois where the owners are also installers. We know the business from both sides.”

Norman Carpet One Floor & Home, knows how important

it is to feel confident in your flooring selection. You want to know it’s going to look exactly the way you want once it’s installed in your home. That’s why they offer you unmatched peace of mind with our

one-of-a-kind guarantee for Carpet One products.

“We want you to be 100 per-cent happy that the floor we’ve created together is as beautiful as the one in your dreams,” Nor-man said. “If not, we will replace

it for free. That’s what we call The Beautiful Guarantee™.”

They also offer an easy-to-understand warranty system that gives you a level of protec-tion that is tailored for you.

At Norman Carpet One you can get fast, easy and secure financing. You can apply for your Carpet One credit card through our secure online credit application, and know your buy-ing power, before you shop.

Norman Carpet One works to have a great relationship with their customers with price, selection, customer service and guarantees.

“But, when we think about what we are most proud of when it comes to our family and our business, the first thing we think of is our relationship with Jesus Christ,” Norman said.

Visit Brian, Becky and Tyler at Norman Carpet One for flooring knowledge and experience like no other in Southern Illinois.

Steve Ledbetter opened his first Medicine Shoppe in Harrisburg in 1983. He and The Medicine Shoppe team are devoted to serving their community by going above and beyond to provide them with pharmaceuticals and home healthcare products. Since opening, the community

responded with loyal support that encouraged Ledbetter to open additional locations in Marion in 1985 and Ridgway in 2006.

“We try to instill a service-oriented approach in taking care of people,” Ledbetter said. “Whether it is greeting them with a friendly smile or

delivering their prescriptions right to their door, our customers come first,” he added.

The Medicine Shoppe strives to offer their customers the most convenient and helpful service. “We reach above and beyond to serve and meet the unique health care needs of our customers,” says Angie Tresso, sales representative for Medicine Shoppe. To better serve their customers needs, The Medicine Shoppe began selling a full line of home medical and respiratory equipment, including lift chairs, hospital beds, and portable oxygen systems. This effort

has expanded to Home Health Solutions, a new business by the Medicine Shoppe, set to open in Harrisburg this summer.

The Medicine Shoppe is returning to its roots in Harrisburg by purchasing and renovating an empty storefront. When finished, this building will house Home Health Solutions by The Medicine Shoppe.

Although, the Marion store will continue to display a showroom of the equipment and the Harrisburg and Ridgway locations will continue to sell a variety of the equipment, the new Home Health Solutions showroom will display the full line of all available equipment, from bathroom safety equipment to diabetic shoes. With licensed respiratory therapists and knowledgeable employees on staff, Home Health Solutions will be able to offer an exceptional and educational experience for caregivers, doctors, patients,

and all individual customers.“We’re a complete center

for all facets of home medical care. Many people consider us a one-stop shop for their health needs,” Ledbetter explains. “We are able to offer many products and services that the chains don’t offer,” he added.

Being a locally-owned business, The Medicine Shoppe takes pride in contributing to the revitalization of the community that has supported them for so long. With this new business and reconstruction project, Home Health Solutions by The Medicine Shoppe hopes to enrich the community’s growth and development and to enhance the quality and convenience of medical care for all of Southern Illinois.

“It really is thanks to our loyal customers and employees that we are able to take this next step and to continue to be a vital part of the communities we serve,” said Ledbetter.

It’s simple economics. As much as $75 out of every $100 that you spend at

locally owned businesses remain in your area, according to recent studies.Compare that to $40 at non-locally owned

establishments and zero dollars when you buy online, and your shopping priorities should be crystal clear.

Local ImpactMore money staying put in your area means

more funding for your schools, roads and hos-pitals. Tax revenue created from local purchases goes back into community improvements and new development opportunities.

In short, your money plays a major role in enhancing your daily life and the lives of those around you – depending on where you spend it.

Additionally, small-business owners are more likely to make social investments in the community by volunteering at their child’s school, donating to local charities and hosting fundraising events, according to The American Small Business Coalition. Doing so allows these entrepreneurs to ingrain themselves into their communities and make it known that they are sensitive to the needs of those around them.

From local music groups to youth sports teams, small-business owners are quick to offer their sponsorship and money to help support commu-nity groups. This helps create customer buy-in for business owners, as well as a reputation for genuinely caring about their communities.

Hiring LocalAnd since local business owners hire local

workers – about half of all private sector workers are employed in small businesses, according to the Bureau of Labor – money for taxes and wages stays in the community, too.

Unemployment statistics are linked very closely to the success or failure of small busi-nesses, which means that your infusion of shop-ping money can also make a positive impact on a national level. This creates a strong connection between workers and customers alike.

You’re more than just another number in the customer count when you visit a local business. Without your business, your local small-busi-ness owner would not be able to hire or retain as many local workers. From the owner down to the seasonal part-timer, all employees of small busi-nesses depend on your support.

CrossFit Marion

Fish Tales Pet Shop

The most important thing that Nathan Simp-kins of CrossFit Marion wants everyone to know about CrossFit is that it is for everyone.

“Anyone can do it, no matter what your fitness level or fitness goals are,” said Simpkins, owner and trainer. “If you are over-weight, out of shape, or have an injury, CrossFit workouts can and will be scaled to your ability. “

The programming at CrossFit Marion is a blend of personal training and group exercise classes, with hands-on coaching and motivation by a certi-fied trainer for every class.

“The trainer helps adapt the workout of the day (WOD) for you based on ability level, injuries, and any other relevant factors,” said

Simpkins, who grew up in Herrin and graduated from SIU with a bachelors in Recreation Administra-tion and a masters in Sport Management.

“You are not paying for a simple gym member-ship–you are paying for a motivator that gets you results,” Simpkins said.

Along with that moti-vation, CrossFit Marion also focuses on functional movements in the gym that replicate movement in real life or sport.

CrossFit Marion focuses on building strength, flex-ibility, endurance, stamina, speed, power, agility, balance, coordination and accuracy.

Variety is the key to improving all these areas of training.

“To get this variety, we use movements and train-ing techniques and skills from the sports of weight-lifting, gymnastics, and metabolic conditioning.” Simpkins said. “CrossFit specializes in not special-izing.”

Find out what CrossFit Marion is like at a free class, with a coach, offered every

Wednesday at 7 p.m.The gym has separate

men’s and women’s showers, restrooms,

and changing areas and is family friendly with a

large kid’s area.

Linda Hooker is proud of the happy pets and helpful staff at Fish Tales Pet Shop. Hooker and Fish Tales Pet Shop have been a tradition in southern Illinois for more than 20 years, as a top store for pets and pet supplies. They have been in their bigger and better facility in Energy, Ill, for a whole year now

“We’ve got more room and now offer hydrosurge technology for grooming,’ she said. ‘It offers deep cleaning and massage.”

Hooker attributes the store’s success to her experienced staff and staying locally focused.

They’ve heard every question from what to feed a lizard to caring for

hamster babies and more.“We know these things,”

Hooker said. “We have the experience to help our customers out.”

That tradition of helping brings the customers back.

“We’re not a chain, we’re locally owned,” she said. “That means we care more about people and their pets.”

Hooker and her staff are serious about customer service.

“It’s not just a job and we’re not just employees; we’re neighbors and friends,” she said.

The friendly staff enjoys helping customers find new “friends” of their own, including dogs, cats, fresh and saltwater fish, hamsters, guinea pigs, bunnies, birds,

reptiles and more.“We treat every pet

with the utmost love and consideration, from the littlest mouse to the biggest puppy,” said Hooker. “We care about people and their pets.”

Independent businesses across the country have worked hard at getting their message to the masses. Message received.

Local First initiatives are boosting customer traffic on Main Street, according to a 2013 national survey of independent business owners conducted by the Institute for Local Self-Reliance in partnership with the Advocates for Independent Business.

With 550 member businesses, Local First is the largest organization supporting and advocating for locally owned companies in the Midwest.

The survey – gathered from 2,602 independent businesses – also found that small-business owners need policymakers to do more to create a level playing field. Write your local congressional leaders to make your voice heard on any of the following issues you feel need to be addressed.

Among the survey’s

key findings:

Strong growth: Independent businesses

reported revenue growth of 5.3 percent on average in 2013.

Buy Local: More than 75 percent of

businesses located in cities with active Local First campaigns reported increased customer traffic. They also reported sales growth of 7 percent on average in 2013, compared to 2.3 percent for independent businesses in places without such an initiative.

Roadblocks: Competition

from large internet

companies, unbalanced supplier pricing and the high cost of health insurance are a few of the chief concerns identified by small-business owners, according to the survey.

Policy priorities: Many small-business owners

are continually pushing the requirement to collect sales tax to large online retailers, as the

survey confirmed. Eliminating public subsidies and tax breaks for big companies would go a long way toward balancing the scales in the eyes of many independent retailers.

Internet sales tax: More than three-quarters

of independent retailers said in the survey that the fact that many online companies are not

required to collect sales tax had hurt their sales. More than 40 percent of these respondents described the level of impact to their sales as “significant.”

Access to credit: In the past two years, 42

percent of small business loan applicants failed to obtain a loan or received one for less than the amount they needed.

The Carbondale Farmers Market started from humble beginnings in 1976 as the Illinois South Project, an organization sponsored by the United Church of Christ. The Illinois South Project helped local, small farm families stay economically sustainable and provide a market of local, fresh produce for the community. The Carbondale Farmers Market has since grown to be one of the oldest successful markets in the state.

Every Saturday the Carbondale Farmers Market offers quality, seasonal, fresh produce and more, all locally grown in Southern Illinois.

In early spring, customers can expect asparagus, lettuce, greens, onions, mushrooms and more. As the season warms up, look for tomatoes, green beans, onions, zucchini, different varieties of squash, cucumbers, blueberries,

cherries, peaches, melons, apples, and green peppers.

Farmers offer garlic, fresh herbs in pots and planters, along with fresh cut basil, cilantro, mints and parsley.

There is also cheese, grass fed beef, sustainable pork and chicken, lamb, salmon from Alaska and bison.

Cut flowers in season include daffodils, peonies, iris, and more. There is also a wide selection of annuals, perennials, native plants and hanging baskets.

“Our variety changes as the season changes so there are always surprises for the shopper,” said Ann Stahlheber, Market Manager. “Southern Illinois’ climate allows farmers to grow an amazing variety of produce.”

On average, the market has 28-32 vendors who offer locally grown, seasonal fruit and vegetables, meats, baked goods,

plants and local arts and crafts to the community.

“We have farmers who have been participating in the market since the early years and farm families that are just beginning their farming lives,” Stahlheber said. “We are a unique market and our customers are loyal and supportive to the small farms and businesses that sell every Saturday morning from April-November.”

Over the years, the members of the market and the shoppers have developed friendly relationships. The customers know who grows their produce.

“The fact that every Saturday a large group of farmers, artists and others come together and sell locally grown produce, etc. to shoppers makes us unique,” “Produce is fresh, shoppers know where their food comes from, and through the seasons friendships are formed between

the vendor and the shopper.”For customers, it lets them

know where their produce and meat are coming from and the growers are available to answer questions about the farming techniques they use.

“Growers appreciate who is buying their product,” said Stahlheber.

“It makes the farmer proud of what they grow.”

The economy of the market and the relationship between the customer and producer is up close and personal. The market is also farmer managed, unlike some markets, which are city managed.

Musical and community groups also participate in the market, adding more local flavor and fun.

The Carbondale Farmers Market continues to evolve. They are proud to give back to the community by giving away several boxes of fresh produce

each week to the Good Samaritan Food Pantry and Soup Kitchen.

“This year we have added a small farm family specializing in mushroom cultivation and a local farm family growing chicken and eggs,” said Stahlheber. “We also have a pork producer, and local bison farm. The added variety of meats to our vegetables and fruits makes our market almost a one-stop shopping center for family groceries.”

“We are proud that since 1976 we have been a part of the Carbondale Community and that we, as a group of family farms and small businesses, have been able to keep the market successful, and each year offer a better market to the community,” said Stahlheber. “We are proud that the community has supported the Carbondale Farmers Market over the years and has helped us grow.”

D&C Heating and Cooling D&C Heating and Cool-

ing is a family owned and operated business started by the late Sam Davis in 1962. His legacy carries on today with sons, Chuck and Bill Davis.

Sam Davis’ main goal when he started the busi-ness was to take care of his customers. As he always said, “If you take care of your customers, the

business will take care of itself”. So after 52 years of sales and service his words still carry true. Most of our business comes from referrals. This is because of the excellent service we provide.

We are proud to offer the following services: free estimates Peak Per-formance Maintenance agreements, Carbon

Monoxide testing, com-plete systems cleanings for maximum perfor-mance, custom sheet metal work.

D & C Heating and Cooling service all brands of equipment and have 24 hour emergency service with a live answering service after office hours so we can take care of our customers.

Farmers and custom applicators will now be able to better apply her-bicides and pesticides to growing crops by using The Knox attachments sold by CAMS Sales Co., LLC.

The Knox attaches to almost any

self-propelled sprayer enabling the sprayer to be used even in crops that are over three feet tall.

The unique risers ele-vate the sprayer, to allow the operator to apply liquid nitrogen, her-bicides and pesticides

later in various cycles, providing better yield potential.

The risers, which elevate the sprayer, do not stress the boom attachment.

The Knox and YDrop attachments, developed in Iowa for corn and

soybeans, are being used in Canada for canola and cotton in the Southern US states.

Louisiana State Uni-versity is using these attachments in research test plots.

Becks Hybrid Seeds is also using the YDrop

and Knox equipment to apply liquid nitrogen at the time the corn is in the cob development stage, to produce more rows and higher yields.

Improve production with The Knox, sold by CAMS Sales right here in the heartland.

SHOP LOCAL | FEELING BETTER

Yes, it is a real thing. Well, maybe not as defined by the American Psychiatric Association, but “retail therapy” has been shown to impact people in large-

scale studies. Most recently researched by the University of

Michigan, people tend to spend more on themselves when they’re feeling sad about something.

Another recent study published by Psychological Science polled dozens of volunteers in a unique way. A team of researchers from Carnegie Mellon, Harvard, Stanford and the University of Pittsburgh showed volunteers either a video clip that showed grief following a tragic death or a neutral clip from a nature show. They found that people who watched the sad video clip offered an average of 300 percent more money for the item than those who had viewed the neutral clip.

Feel Good by Going Green“Retail Therapy” isn’t the only way that shopping

locally can make you feel good. The impact you make on the environment can go a long way, too. Every dollar you spend locally decreases your carbon footprint by reducing the amount of gas and packaging required to complete the supply chain process.

The connection between smart shopping and sustainability is strong, especially when spending is at its peak. So whether you’re shelling out your hard-earned tax refund or Christmas shopping stockpile, don’t forget the health of the environment and the shape you want to leave it for future generations.

Less Travel = Quality TimeBuying more locally produced products can help

us refine our air because it cuts down on travel for both you and delivery drivers. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, trucks and locomotives are responsible for 25 percent of smog-causing pollution and the majority of the cancer threat posed by air pollution in some areas.

Staying local can lead to more quality time spent with family, too, instead of being confined inside of your car. Cleaner air AND more time with your favorite people? By now you should be feeling all fuzzy inside about shopping locally. Now go share your positive feelings – and money – with your local business owners.

Town Square Market Town Square Market

is a local, family owned natural food store in his-toric downtown Carbon-dale, Illinois.

Opened in October 2006, Town Square Mar-ket is a values-driven business that operates under the basic principle that food and nutrition, as well as good health, are essential birthrights. “Our mission is to get high quality natural food at reasonable prices to local folks,” said Jennifer Pel-low, owner/manager. “The quality of our groceries and the way in which they are produced is our abso-lute priority.”

Town Square Market is driven by a commitment to selecting products from companies that share these values.

Pellow explains, “We

strive to stock products that don’t have GMO’s. We are currently working to replace products from companies that don’t sup-port GMO labeling. Our customers share these values and trust that we have their best interests in mind,” Pellow said. “They feel confident in knowing that what they get from the Town Square Market is good for them, their family and the greater commu-nity.”

They are always expand-ing to have new items in their bakery and deli.

“We use our own organic ingredients in all our bakery and deli items. This year we’ve intro-duced onion rolls and a new whole wheat German bread to our bakery, which are a fantastic hit,” Pel-low said. “Our deli is now

offering more sushi and salad choices.”

Town Square Market also caters, with a huge selection of soups, salads, sushi and other homemade foods for any event.

The bulk foods section has the best deals in town on natural products.

“Our staff is dedicated to making our custom-ers feel welcome,” Pellow said. “As a family owned business, our staff is part of our family and in turn that’s how they treat our customers.”

She knows customers have other choices.

“People could choose to shop at larger, more popu-lar locations but what they get from the Town Square Market is more than just great food… they get to feel part of a loving com-munity,” Pellow said.

Celebrating their 50th anniversary, Vernell’s Interstate Service was established in 1964 by Vernell Sellars of Marion, with nothing more than a pick-up truck and a jack in the garage behind his home.

The Marion based company has become the area’s first choice for truck and car towing, recovery and repair.

They specialize in tire repair and replacement on trucks and cars alike, including emergency roadside service. Handling Goodyear and Bridgestone national accounts, they have an extensive stock full of all size tires, both new and used. As a NAPA Truck Center, they are known for their truck repair and work with several fleet service companies, but they also service passenger cars.

In addition, their facil-ity is located conveniently next to Interstate 57, Exit 54, behind the truck stop, and has a fully stocked parts department, capable of locating most parts needed to get you back on the road as soon

as possible.Motorists can find

comfort knowing there are experienced, trained tech-nicians working 24 hours a day, seven days a week at Vernell’s Interstate Service.

They are available and ready to help you when you

are broke down and stuck on the side of the road.

Vernell Sellar’s son, Randy, now oversees the family owned and operated company. He continues the tradition of community-minded service passed down by his father, who

continues to be a big influ-ence on the way the day-to-day business is handled.

Vernell’s purchases a great deal of their parts and supplies from local vendors.

And just like his dad, Randy believes in giving

back to the community. It is a big part of who he is as a person and who Vernell’s Interstate Service is as a company.

Hopefully, these tradi-tions and practices will carry on into the next gen-eration.

Century 21 House of Realty, Inc Founded in 1982, and

purchased in 2006 by Richard and Janie Davis, CENTURY 21 House of Realty, Inc. is now an award winning agency with five locations in Marion, Carterville/Herrin, Carbondale, Murphysboro and at the Lake of Egypt.

CENTURY 21 House of Realty, Inc. consistently achieves national recognition for its level of quality real estate services provided and was recognized in 2009 as the national award winner for CENTURY 21, LLC as Best Technology company.

“The biggest strength of our company are the people and technologies we employ to serve the residents of southern Illinois,” said Managing Broker & Owner Richard Davis. “Being a regional real estate company, we have connections from one side of the region to the other.”

Those regional connections are a benefit to the buyer and seller.

“While every real estate office serves the community it’s located in, our company serves the region making even greater opportunities to buyers and sellers alike because of our broad reach into all areas of Southern Illinois,” Davis said. “As such, broker associates in Marion have an office in Carbondale to work out of, Carbondale brokers

have an office at the lake to work out of when conducting business there, and so on.”

The regional approach of CENTURY 21 House of Realty, Inc. has the customer in mind.

“It puts our customers first, in convenience and assistance,” Davis said.

CENTURY 21 House of Realty, Inc. also puts the customer first when it comes to technology.

“The technologies available to consumers is ever changing and our obligation to stay up on those technologies is ongoing,” Davis said. “Our company is very internet oriented yet simplistic in design”

By shopping their website, www.buysihomes.com, a consumer has a very clean and simple format without all the clutter and advertising at other real estate portals.

“We’ve optimized our site to make viewing available homes easy on whatever device the consumer is using; phone, tablet, iPad, laptop, or desktop,” Davis said. “There is no resizing the screen to fit your device. We’re proud to offer that convenience.”

According to Davis, quality service is their “best deal.”

“We have achieved the Pinnacle of Service standards within the CENTURY 21 system,”

Davis said. “Each office has attained that high level of service and works daily to maintain it.”

At CENTURY 21 House of Realty, Inc., that quality service has led to outstanding customer service.

“When a consumer is ready to buy or sell, many times they really don’t know the individual broker that comes to their door.” Davis said. “We can offer statistics and services that far surpass the industry in customer satisfaction. Commission is important to consumers but so is the level of integrity, professionalism, ethics and support. That is what our customers have reported time and time again in the exit surveys received. “

As managing broker, Davis says he is proud of the agents and staff that make up CENTURY 21 House of Realty, Inc.

“Day in and day out, they strive to provide not just good service but OUTSTANDING service to our customers and clients,” Davis said. “Maintaining the highest level of service and professionalism to the many they cross paths with, and the demands placed on them each day, is really something to see and be proud of.”

CENTURY 21 House of Realty, Inc. would be honored to help you with your real estate needs in Southern Illinois.

During a time of need, you want to call someone you can count on.

Walker Funeral Home, the oldest continuously family owned and operated funeral home in Carbon-dale, has been “Dedicated to Service” and committed to serving the families of Southern Illinois for more than 62 years.

We offer a full range of services with a trained staff to give you a personal and professional service.

Along with tradition, the Walker family wel-comes change.

Our largest funeral home, located at 112 South Poplar Street in Carbon-dale, Illinois, is our origi-nal location which was built in 1850 and is listed as a Historical Home of Carbondale.

In 1950 after graduating from St Louis University School of Mortuary Ser-vice, James W. Walker came to Southern Illinois to start his own funeral business and through the years, added two more funeral homes, one in Hurst and another in Alto Pass.

James married Mary L (Shafer) Walker in 1962. In 1966, Mary became the first woman to graduate from Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Mortuary Science and

Funeral Services ProgramShe and her son, Regge

Walker, worked side by side with James until the time of his death in 1996. Mary and Regge continued to serve all of Southern Illinois with the highest standard of professional service and personaliza-tion.

Upon Mary’s death in 2010, the legacy of Walker Funeral Home passed down to Regge. To this day, the dedication to service established by his parents is left unwavering.

In 2011, Regge pur-chased the Huffman-Harker funeral Home to continue the Huffman family legacy of service since the early 1900’s.

G.R. Huffman was a business-minded indi-vidual who was raised in Carbondale. He started Huffman’s Store in the mid 1850’s and then opened Huffman Furniture and Undertaking. He was the proud owner of one of the first three cars in the city of Carbondale. In 1925, he established the first stand-alone funeral home in the area. In 1987, Huffman Funeral Home was purchased by Harold Harker, who spent many years serving the families of Carbondale as well as surrounding areas. Upon his retirement, Harold sold

his business to Regge. The Walker family

knows the rising cost of funeral services today may have you concerned. We want to help. At Walker Funeral Home, we realize that not everyone wants or needs the traditional funeral service, nor can they afford the high cost of funerals. We offer many alternative funeral services to meet your every need including: traditional funeral services, memorial services , church services, graveside services, crema-tions, body donations, pre-planning counseling and even funeral home tours .

Walker Funeral Home is continually looking for ways to better serve fami-lies in their time of need.

Every year during the holiday season, we have our Tree of Remembrance for the families we have served throughout the year. Crystal ornaments of angels, doves, and but-terflies adorn our trees. The name, birth and death dates of the loved ones who have passed are delicately displayed on the ornaments for the families to come in and view before taking home to appreciate on their own trees.

Many families are requesting more relaxed or casual services. Walker

Funeral Home is there to help you plan a specialized service for your loved one.

Remodeling proj-ects have improved the exterior of the Alto Pass location, new chapels, selection room and park-ing. The addition of our new lead car and funeral coach, gives the funeral procession safe and reli-able transportation to the cemetery. We have also added an elevator to our Carbondale location which provides families with easy access to our selec-tion room.

The newest addition is Walker’s on-site crema-tory facility, established in 2003. Cremation is becoming an alternative and addition to the tradi-tional wake.

The Walker family and staff are committed to service with security and peace of mind. The loved ones of those we serve will never leave our facility for the cremation process. We can also arrange for view-ing and visitation prior to the cremation process.

Additionally, we can provide information on government ben-efits, information on veteran benefits, out of town arrangements and help with filing insurance claims

Walker Funeral Home

also specializes in interna-tional services.

We encourage you to speak with our trained staff about a pre-arrange-ment, choosing the service and possible merchandise (i.e. casket, vault, cem-etery property, etc.) before the services are needed. A carefully pre-planned funeral service can be comforting to your family members as it spares them from facing emotionally and financially difficult decisions at the time of death.

We can help you plan the service that is right for you. You will receive a no obli-gation price quote on

your customized service. Our history of caring

for our family in Southern Illinois makes us a trusted partner when people have made their pre-arrange-ments with us knowing that it is a service we offer at no charge and is abso-lutely confidential.

After 62 years, Walker Funeral Home remains “Dedicated to Service” and committed to serving the families of South-ern Illinois.

First Bank and Trust Back in 1889, a group

of community leaders decided Murphysboro needed a bank. There were about 3,700 people who called Murphysboro home. A loaf of bread cost about three cents and the bank evolved into what today is First Bank and Trust Company, Mur-physboro’s only home owned and operated bank.

When the doors opened for business, assets were $69,547.28. Today those assets are $70 million. As the town grew, the Bank became an integral part of the growth, supporting business, manufacturing and agriculture. There were hard times, too, from a depression, wars, crop failures and the Tri State Tornado which devastated homes, school and the

very fabric of life.As the area faced enor-

mous challenges, First Bank and Trust continued to honor its roots in the community. Today suc-cessful projects that foster stability and community spirit remain a mainstay of a philosophy of prog-ress. Murphysboro Apple Festival, Logan Museum, church festivals, youth programs, scouting and countless other com-munity events, First Bank and Trust consistently maintains a position of financial leadership combined with commu-nity service.

“I believe the success of Murphysboro is in direct correlation with the suc-cess of the bank” Presi-dent and CEO Michael Cripps said.

“The stability and consistency of our found-ers translates into a combination of the best in technology with the personal relationships we have with our customers. We are proud to be a real community bank.”

Cripps views the future as full of promise for the area and, he said, “Our strength is in our people and our strong sense of purpose. We look forward to being an active par-ticipant in the growth of Southern Illinois.”

I believe the success of Murphysboro is in direct correlation with the success of the bank
