From the editorWelcome to the October edition of Local Reach. With the clocks going back this month on the 26th October, the feeling of autumn is with us, as the leaves fall off the trees and the evenings draw in. That can only mean events indoors! There are a number of musical events taking place this month, with an opportunity to sing along with the Burnham and Highbridge Choral Society at St Andrew’s Church, Burnham and Highbridge Band at The Princess Theatre and Arts Centre, with an array of other performers at the same venue. With Carnival soon approaching now is the time to consider your availability for helping out at this event and supporting it financially to ensure we continue this tradition. This publication goes to over 10,000 households in the local area - what better way to publicise your clubs events! Please contact me if you would like information in the forthcoming edition of LocalReach.

Highbridge HistorySt John’s Church in Highbridge was originally built in 1857. Compared to some churches locally (in particular St Andrew’s in Burnham-on-Sea) it is a relative newcomer. Even so, we have a substantial history as a church community and are keen to find out more about our past. In July we began to put together a ‘time line’ of how the church has grown since the mid-19th Century, and we are keen to continue filling in some of the gaps. If you have anything to offer, a story to tell, some names and dates that we might find interesting, please drop us a line and we can maybe include your information on the still-evolving history of this important part of Highbridge history. If you are able to provide any information email [email protected], but also the time line is on show in the church which is open every day between 9am and 5pm. Why not pop in and leave us a note! Alternatively, call Rev Simon Bale on 01278 792701.

Sedgemoor RamblersAutumn is here and a lovely time of year to be out walking in the countryside and enjoying the changing colours. We’ve enjoyed walks across Somerset during the summer, including a Summer Outing walking along the coast in the Ilfracombe area, a Summer Tea and a Walk Back in Time on the Quantocks. Our autumn programme is now available from Tourist Information Offices and on our website www.sedgemoorramblers.co.uk. Our main walking day is Sunday but we have popular monthly, shorter walks on Saturdays throughout the winter months. We will be holding our AGM again at Fyne Court following a walk in the morning - a chance to find out what has been going on in our group and what is planned for the year ahead, so anyone interested in walking with us would be welcome. Sedgemoor Ramblers is a group within Ramblers. New walkers are invited to walk a few times with the group before becoming a member. We are a friendly and sociable group who share a love of the outdoors and we would be pleased to hear from you. Our Membership Secretary, Esmé can also send you a programme and answer any queries - ring 01278 784190.

Come along to send off balloons at 2pm, with tournaments being held until 4pm. All are invited to try out the community games on the Diamond Jubilee Field next to the office/toilet block. co.uk or calling at the Park Office to arrange a booking. The next meeting of the Friends of Apex Park Improvements Group will be held on Wednesday 8th October at 2pm at the Park Office.

Marine CoveHealth Walks starting from Marine Cove are taking place on the last Wednesday in the month, and anyone is welcome to come along. They are being organised by community gardener Jacqui Strong. Meet in the garden at 9.45am to complete a short health questionnaire, ready to start the walk along the Esplanade and back through the Apex Park. The walk takes approximately 1 hour and is about 2 ½ miles in length. It is flat going and an easy pace; wear appropriate clothing and footwear and we recommend you bring a bottle of water for refreshment.

The garden is fortunate enough to feature in a children’s book by local author Linda Bond, titled Marine Cove Princess ISBN 9781784079963 available via www.feedaread.com. Follow the story of a young girl called Marnie who stumbles across the garden at a very hard time in her life. Follow her involvement in a little piece of magic created around Marine Cove.

For details of future events, visit www.marinecove.org.uk. We are looking for volunteers for 2015 to help with gardening projects and event ideas in the garden. If you would like to hire the garden for an event, email [email protected].

W.I.As the days grow shorter, perhaps you are thinking of finding something interesting to do one afternoon a month for two hours. The W.I. may be just the answer for you. We have friendly members to welcome you, and interesting speakers to listen to. If you join as a member in October you will get 15 months for the price of 12 - so quite a bargain! Our October meeting is on Tuesday 28th October from 2pm. We meet at the Community Centre in Berrow Road. Our October speaker is Trisha Humphries who is talking about 'Your Local Library and the W.I. Campaign'. In 2011 the W.I. members adopted a mandate launching the 'Love Your Libraries' campaign, when many libraries were threatened with closure. W.I. members have championed the library service, highlighted the important role that libraries play and raised awareness of risks to the service.

We welcome visitors, both male and female, and ask for a £3 donation to cover our costs. We look forward to welcoming you to one of our meetings. For more information please contact The President, Brenda Adams on 01278 781771 or go to our website: www.burnhamwi.btck.co.uk.

Trick or treat? The Walled Gardens of Cannington is a real treat for the whole family at Halloween. Over two days, the Gardens will be home to pumpkins ready to be carved, trails to be explored and fancy dress costumes to be spooked by! Children can run around (closely followed by the adults!) and discover the many areas of the Gardens, finding pumpkins on the trail and creating their own carvings.

The activities aren’t just for children though, at this very popular event adults can wander around the historic settings, set within a medieval priory in the heart of Cannington. It is said that a network of tunnels exist beneath the Gardens, leading to various spots in the village so that the nuns and nearby monks could meet in secret. Over the years many local stories have survived concerning ghostly visitations by nuns. There is also a tomb for Bishop Peter Bernadine Collingridge who died in 1829 located in one of the gardens, which adds to the ghostly feel at this time of year!

Tickets to this extremely popular Halloween event cost £5 per child, accompanying adult per child, free, which includes entrance to the Gardens, drink of squash, a biscuit and a pumpkin (whilst stocks last)! To avoid disappointment, tickets can be purchased in advance from the Walled Gardens’ Gift Shop or online at store.bridgwater.ac.uk. We look forward to seeing you!

If you would like more information about The Walled Gardens of Cannington please visit http://www.canningtonwalledgardens.co.uk/home/, telephone 01278 655042 or email [email protected].

PUMPKIN TRAIL & CARVINGThurs 30 & Fri 31 October, 10am – 3pmFollow the trail through the gardens, find a little something – maybe a pumpkin! Carve out a mouth, some eyes and a nose, make it spooky or smiley – anything goes!

£5 per child - to include drink, Halloween biscuit and pumpkin. Buy your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment! Adults gain free entry to the gardens when accompanying a child under 16. For further details visit our website or find us on Facebook and Twitter.

THE FLOWER GARDENContinue planting spring-flowering bulbs. Small bulbs should be planted 5-8 cm (2-3 in) deep, and larger bulbs 10-15cm (4-6in) deep. Leave tulip planting until next month. A handful of grit in the planting hole will help with drainage.Continue deadheading plants as flowers fade, and remove dead stems of perennials. This is a good month for planting evergreen hedges such as conifers, yew, privet or box. Always prepare the ground well.Lift the height of mower blades as grass growth starts to slow.

VEGETABLE GARDEN Clear away bean sticks and other stakes, plus rotting vegetation.Store root crops in dry sand or peat and store fruit in a cool, dry, frost free place.Plant garlic and over wintering onions outside, and sow sweet peas indoors.Prepare ground for new fruit trees and bushes.Apply grease bands to established fruit trees to protect them against winter moths.

Road Smart: Scheme to reduce road casualtiesIIn just one year in Avon and Somerset, 452 people were killed or seriously injured on our roads. Around one third of these were young people aged 17 to 24. To help reduce this figure we have launched a free education course for drivers, and learner drivers, in the force area. Road Smart is available for all drivers, but we

are especially keen to encourage young drivers to attend the session. The course has been specially created on behalf of Avon and Somerset Police. It aims to raise awareness of potential hazards on the roads and build on motorists’ existing driving knowledge and experience.• 95% of all collisions are caused by human error.• 1 in 5 new drivers will have a crash within their first six months of driving.• Road crashes are the biggest single killer of young people in the UK.

Some insurance companies will offer a discount to young drivers who have completed the workshop. The course is a one-off interactive session and will be held at venues across the force area. It is based on the successful training package that is used for driver awareness courses nationally. Supt Ian Smith said, “This is a fantastic opportunity to benefit from a free course that could be a life-saving opportunity. The training will be delivered by the TTC group, a professional road safety education provider. The national course this is based upon is widely hailed as excellent and thought-provoking and really does influence driver behaviour.”

Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said, “I am delighted Avon and Somerset Police have designed a unique road safety package to further educate all road users, but particularly young drivers."

Courses can be booked in advance, and will be running until early 2015. There are two versions - one for young drivers (aged 17 to 24) and one for other drivers. If you are, or know of, a young driver who would like to join this course, or you are aged 25 or over and interested in attending, go to www.roadsmart.org for further details.

Upgraded Play Area Work to upgrade a play area in Talbot Close, Highbridge will include a four-seater seesaw, roundabout and toddler multi-play unit. A bench and bin will also be provided. The roundabout and toddler multi-play unit are designed to be inclusive for use by disabled children. The multi-play unit includes a double width slide, ring climber, binocular platform and climbing grips. The existing swings will remain in situ. Local residents and visitors to the area may have already noticed some changes to the park. The existing wooden palisade fencing, which had reached the end of its life, is currently

being replaced with traditional play area style metal fencing with two new self-closing pedestrian gates. The new play area and fencing, costing £31,600 has been funded through RLT2 Developer Contributions for Play. RLT2 contributions are held by Sedgemoor District Council. The play area in Talbot Close was marked for a major make-over after discussions with residents, town and district councillors. Earlier this year local residents were consulted on the design and were asked to choose between a traditional play park, community garden with vegetable planting or a community garden with shrubs and informal play equipment installed. The results showed a traditional play park was the preferred option. During work on upgrading the park, a wide range of alternative play facilities are available at Apex Park which is just a short two minute stroll from Talbot Close.

Highbridge Community Hall Presents a Barn DanceOn Saturday 11th October at 7pm, join us for a Barn Dance. Tickets cost £4. Bring your own drinks and enjoy an American Buffet by bringing your own food to share. Tickets are available from David Napper on 01278 792371, Fay or Ken Burston on 01278 782529 or on the door.

Ye’ll have had ya tea, Dougal? Our regular concert-goers will know that making the October concert a little different has become a tradition for the Burnham and Highbridge Band. Over the years we have flavoured the evening with a ‘Last Night of the Proms’ theme, and the Scrumpy Sax Quartet have become favourite guest stars. As players, we have been both thrilled and honoured to collaborate with a fantastic Army bagpipe trio. This year we will be revisiting the Scottish theme and pulling out all the stops to transform the Princess Theatre into a restaurant for the evening, where you will be served with a Scottish High Tea - with music as its centrepiece, of course! Come and be entertained on Sunday 26th October at 7.45pm, with a mixture of brass, bagpipes and highland dancing, whilst you enjoy traditional Scottish delights including homemade Haggis sausage rolls and Cranachan!

Fancy a new tablet? Recently Microsoft released the Surface Pro 3 tablet and having sold several of these to my customers, I can report that it is a very impressive piece of equipment.

Featuring a 12” super high definition screen, the performance and quality of this device is very nice, albeit not cheap. Weighing in at around 800grams, this unit is possibly the closest thing to a desktop replacement in tablet form that I have seen.

Previously Windows-based tablets tended to be a bit on the slow side, but this model surpasses all the previous Windows tablets. The Surface Pro 3 can be paired with numerous accessories such as a docking station (which can be hooked up to a monitor), wireless mouse, and a nice keyboard, which also acts as a protective sleeve. Check out www.microsoftstore.co.uk to see more on the new Surface Pro 3.

There seems to be a disappointing halt to fibre being rolled out in the Burnham and Highbridge areas. It would seem that certain parts of the area have benefitted by the fibre rollout over the last 18 months, but with other areas (in particular large parts of Highbridge) without any future date being given for this to happen. I appreciate that engineering works can be difficult to achieve a fibre optic network, but the lack of information is frustrating. For more information please visit http://www.connectingdevonandsomerset.co.uk and put in your postcode to see the current status on faster broadband.

You may recall that Windows XP was retired by Microsoft earlier this year, which essentially meant that no more operating system updates would be provided. Having visited many customers running Windows Vista, I would also recommend looking to either update their computer or operating system, as Vista for most people is operating very slowly indeed. Whilst some improvements can be made by servicing these computers, the long term prognosis is not good, so should you have a slow computer and wish to improve things, please contact me to discuss.Neil Buzzard, Director, Computer Problem Solutions Ltd. Secrets of the Sea Emerge - Delving Deep to Reveal Somerset CoastSea hares, sun starfish, and stalked jellyfish are some of the initial sightings of sea life around Somerset during the area’s first survey in more than 30 years. In a bid to better understand the marine environment and help protect it for the future, The Wildlife Trusts commissioned divers to explore the waters off Porlock Weir for a scientific underwater survey. The dive is part of Somerset Wildlife Trust’s Living Seas initiative to raise awareness of Somerset’s marine environment, through public surveys and events. The Trust is working in partnership with a

range of organisations, including the National Trust, to develop collaborative projects that highlight the importance of our coast for wildlife, and promote this to local people and visitors.

The four professional divers and marine ecologists were excited to find two different and very diverse sea bed habitats; a boulder reef north of Gore Point, and a sand and shell plain in the centre of Porlock Bay in the Bristol Channel. They recorded rare stalked jellyfish, bunches of cuttlefish and squid eggs, squat lobsters hiding in crevices, many crab and fish species, brittle and sunstar starfish, plus many sea hares, which are large and exotic-looking marine molluscs.

The stalked jellyfish features in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan and Feature of Conservation Importance species, meaning particular attention needs to be paid to this rare species which may be more sensitive to pressures, and need targeted protection. Many sponge species were found living on the sand and boulders during the two dives, including numerous branching and hedgehog sponges. This survey now provides a more complete picture of the fantastically diverse marine environment of the Somerset coast, which has been somewhat underappreciated in the past. “The wealth of evidence provided by exploratory dive surveys like this, in areas where there is little or no habitat or seabed data, will ensure we have the evidence to secure their conservation and can be included in future discussions over marine protection and conservation measures.” The Wildlife Trusts are working to ensure the UK’s currently under-protected waters are turned back into a thriving marine environment within a generation, for many future generations to enjoy.

Burnham-on-Sea Farmers’ Market: Donna Lucking of ‘Ellises Farm’Donna Lucking is a regular at Burnham-on-Sea Farmers’ Market, selling Gloucester Old Spot pork and pork products. Ellises Farm produces pork, sausages, dry cured bacon and gammon, chorizo and air-dried hams and cured meats. The flavour is, according to Donna, due to the way the pigs are reared and fed. She explains, “We only process pigs that are born on our farm and we turn them into pork products in the traditional way. What makes our pork taste so good is that our pigs spend all their lives outdoors rooting around under the oak trees - this process develops a truly unforgettable flavour in the meat, and delicious crackling.” There is an abundance of goodies in the autumn harvest, and the pigs at Ellises Farm are currently enjoying apples and acorns falling from the trees around the fields. Donna is often the last trader to set up at Burnham Market as she has to drop her three children off at school before she arrives, but her customers know that she is well worth waiting for!www.ellisesfarm.co.uk/

‘Stuck On You’A tiny little bat was found well and truly stuck on a thistle near Shapwick Heath. Sat exposed in the sun, the furry little fiend was luckily spotted by keen wildlife photographer Lynne Newton, who managed to cut the stem of the thistle and bring the bat into Secret World for treatment. Animal carer Josie said, “The bat was extremely lucky to be found by Lynne, he would have surely perished in the sun and died had he not been rescued so quickly.” The little chap had not sustained any serious injuries and was successfully released back into the wild his rescuer. Lynne commented, “This is the first time I have ever been so close to a bat, I didn’t realise how tiny they were, and to be able to release it back into the wild was just amazing.” Secret

World have rescued many bats during the busy summer season, most of which will now be returned back into the wild.

Driving down our £12m landfill bill - recycling right: do not feed food waste to your refuse bin, By Nick CaterNo one likes throwing money away, but that is what Burnham-on-Sea residents are doing when Somerset spends £12 million a year landfilling waste, much of which could be easily recycled. That is one reason why short ‘Recycle More’ trials are now successfully underway in Somerset to explore ways to help householders make big savings by wasting less. Three clusters of homes in Taunton Deane are helping investigate the items that might - in a few years - be the next to be added to kerbside collections. These include the often-requested plastic pots, tub and trays, including yoghurt pots, margarine and ice cream tubs, and fruit trays. Also being trialled for kerbside recycling are Tetra Paks and other beverage cartons, plus household batteries and small electrical items, from toasters to irons, phones to hairdryers. Analysis of trial figures and feedback will assess what effect adding extra items made, to the amounts and quality of new and existing materials being recycled. The Recycle More trials will also review refuse or recycling frequency, and different containers, to see if these could make a significant difference.

Most important will be the impact on refuse levels, as less rubbish in the bins will help cut Somerset's multi-million pound annual landfill bill. Considered as part of the long-term planning of waste services from 2016 at the earliest, the Recycle More trials will not lead to any immediate changes, but Somerset Waste Partnership managing director Steve Read says the results of the Recycle More trials will be fascinating once assessed in 2015. He added, “Evidence from the Recycle More trials will help develop efficient, cost-effective services that are good for the environment and good for Burnham.

“Our research shows that the average refuse bin could be 50% lighter if Burnham households used their existing kerbside recycling boxes and food waste container to the full. Most people in Burnham recycle, and find it is simple, rewarding, and takes very little time."

Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset: www.somersetwaste.gov.uk.
