Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Do you suffer from pelvic pain or incontinence? Do you have pain in the pelvis, low back or hips that is associated with sitting, walking, urination or intercourse? Have you experienced leaking of urine or feces when coughing, sneezing or laughing? Do you have pain in the pelvic area associated with cancer?

These are conditions that are common with pelvic floor muscle dysfunction. Over time, due to stress, scar tissue, surgeries and the natural course of aging, our muscles may become weak or overstressed and can spasm. This can lead to pain, weakness, incontinence or decreased quality of life.

Men and women with pelvic floor dysfunction frequently describe:

• A “falling out” feeling.

• Pain or burning in the abdomen, tailbone or perineal area.

• Constipation or bowel elimination problems or difficulty initiating urination.

• Unresolved low back or hip pain.

• Frequency and urgency when going to the bathroom.

• Leaking of urine or feces.

• Pain with intercourse.

Physical therapy treatment for pelvic floor dysfunction may include:

• Education on pelvic floor, hip and low back muscles that may be causing pelvic pain.

• Therapy to correct pelvic and lumbar

alignment along with soft tissue work to relax the three layers of pelvic floor muscles.

• Biofeedback training to regain proper function of the pelvic floor muscles.

• Treatments to relieve pain and re-educate weakened pelvic floor muscles.

• Education on use of dilators or other devices for pain relief or muscle strengthening.

• A home exercise program that includes strengthening and stretching to improve posture, reduce pain and promote healing to the pelvic floor.

Discuss pelvic floor dysfunction with your physician. If you think you may benefit from a physical therapy evaluation, ask your physician for a referral to a physical therapist with expertise in pelvic floor dysfunction to assist you in regaining control of your body.
