LocSec Lowdown Volume 33, Issue 10 November 2016 Hello, fellow Plains & Peaksters! Mike and I are certainly taking advantage of the unseasonably warm October weather. One of the local golf cours- es offers an “All you can golf” deal about once a month, so one day last week, we took advantage of the it and golfed 45 holes (two 18 hole rounds plus a 9). Whew! I sure was red when we got home! Mike and other beekeepers are concerned about their bees, however. Since it’s so warm and every- thing is done blooming, we don’t want the bees to deplete their winter stores by eang all of it now. Mike’s been feeding his bees sugar syrup to help them keep what they have stored in the hives. Bees and beekeepers walk a fine line; they want to har- vest the honey but there must be enough to get the hives through the winter. If you have a fall like this (no forage) or an early winter or a late spring … bees can run out of food too soon over the winter. As we tell our new beekeepers – it’s not as simple as dumping bees into a hive and geng honey every fall! There’s some management and educated guesswork involved! Anyway – Lots of Mensa stuff to talk about in this issue! Let’s start with Give In To Beer Pressure. GITBP was started in November 6 years ago by Vera C (who moved away a couple of years ago and who we miss terribly) and to date, we’ve held it every month since then. So, it’s only fing that we go back to where it started – Bristol Brewing! Kudos to Vera for starng such a popular event and Sean for keeping this event going! Next up – Wayne and Jennie-Jo are hosng “Share the Elecon Experience – Celebrang Our Democ- racy! ”on the 8 th . With all the controversy surround- ing the presidenal candidates, there will be lots of excitement that evening (and some disappointment no doubt)! There are also quite a few local candi- dates and issues worthy of our aenon. We can all agree on one thing though – let’s keep the conver- saons civil and polite! Check the calendar for de- tails about this event! BurgerQuest is another very successful event for our group! Kudos to George for keeping it going – even when he’s not here! Sean, Al, and I have all “guest hosted” a couple of mes. BTW - we’re al- ways looking for new places to go, so if you know of a good burger joint, please let George know. We’re going to try for another Mensa Hike in No- vember – weather depending! This me, a repeat fave, Red Rocks Canyon Open Space. The views are spectacular and the trails well maintained. This may be our last oung for the year – then we’ll pick it up again in the spring! Know of a spot to hike that’s off the beaten track? Let me know! Our November Main Monthly Meeng is a trip to the Manitou Springs Heritage Center. I’ve driven past it for several years now and this seems like a great me to visit since this is the 125 th anniversary of the Cog Railroad, which is a featured exhibit at the Center. And, do you know about the Peanut Pusher? How about Erin O’Keefe and the rats? Let’s visit the Center and see if there’s any truth to those weird and wonderful stories! We’ll be doing Trivial Pursuits and Scrabble in November – but skipping Ulmate Saturday Supper since we’ll probably sll be eang leſtover turkey and stuffing! December has our annual Holiday Gala! While we’re connuing some of our Plains & Peaks Mensa tradions (like the White Elephant Giſt Exchange, lots of party favors, and tons of fun), this year we’re asking you to bring a canned good or non- perishable to be donated to a local charity. Huge “Thanks” to Linda for suggesng this and volunteer- ing to take the donaons to one of the food banks! Just a lile extra from each of us can make a big difference to someone’s holiday season. JGSS BTVMBU Hi guys – The annual Mensa International meeting was held in Otsu, Japan Oc-

tober 14 – 16. Basic outcomes:

The LEAP program has been discontinued. I was in the inaugural

U.S. group in 2010, along with Beth Demeter from (now) Denver,

and Lori Norris from Rhode Island, at Prague, Czech Republic.

We had a great time – very interesting experience. It might re-

turn later on, in a revamped version.

U.S. component (contribution) remains at 7%. We are, by far,

the largest contributor.

There will be an update on the international website.

An interim committee will oversee efforts for China to become a

national Mensa.

The international elections will have an option for electronic

voting this year.

There will be a full report on the meeting in the near future.

2017 and 2018 meetings will be held in Nice, France and Buda-

pest, Hungary.

In domestic news:

The new software (AMS) conversion is proceeding – seems to be

going well. It’s a huge transition – they hope to have it mostly in

place this year. I imagine it will be a long-term thing overall.

RAIT (the new test – replacing MAT) has been distributed to

proctors. I imagine this will be an ongoing process also – MAT

was in place for decades. This is a big change.

Renewal rates are doing well nationally – AMC is about 52,500 as

of late October. Other large Mensa countries and their approxi-

mate membership: British Isles – 20,000, Germany – 11,000,

Sweden - 6,000, Netherlands – 5,000. Worldwide membership

was over 121,000 in June 2016.

Our next Board meeting will be in New Orleans on December 9th

and 10th.

Later,

Greg

MENSA’S YEAR-END PROMOTION! This is an “ideal deal” for pro-spective members who can't attend a testing session and especially for those under age 14. In November and December, qualifying test scores will be evaluated for free! “There is just one way — with quali-fying prior test scores — to gain entry into American Mensa without taking the official Admission Test, and for a limited time that way is free (a $40 savings)! Those qualifying tests include the LSAT, GMAT and other common intelligence tests. With no review fee, why not submit your scores today!” Visit www.us.mensa.org/join/testscores for more information about “prior evidence.” OCTOBER TRIVIAL PURSUITS! Nine Mensans and one interloper took the top 10 places at Trivial Pursuits in October! Sandy was the overall winner then: Damon, George, Khan (the Interloper), Victoria, Susan, J, Loren, Mike and Regan. Susan and J were Warmup Round winners, with George—Countdown Round, Sandy—Category Round, Mike - Lightening Round, Sandy and George—Pyramid Round and Damon—Final Round. Sandy was #168 nation-wide and placed 17th on the “Recent High Scores” board. We all contributed to Buffalo Wild Wings coming in at the #116 location for the nation, including the Interloper. Well done! MERF JUDGES NEEDED! Judging MERF Scholarship Essay Contest entries couldn’t be easier – read the essays (which are all sent to you as PDFs and all under 550 words), follow the 100-point judging system (points for grammar and organization, content and impression – all very clearly spelled out in the judges’ instructions), then send Sandy Halby, the MERF Local Chair, your results on a pre-formatted Excel or Word form!! Easy-peasy! If you can spare a couple of hours late Janu-ary or early February to help with this unique and worthwhile scholar-ship program, that would be great! BTW - one person from our Plains & Peaks Local Group area will receive an award of approximately $300! You could be the deciding judge on who gets it! If you would be interested in helping judge essays, please contact Sandy at 719-528-5483 or [email protected]! Thanks! Do you have a Media or Publicity background? Maybe that’s some-thing you’d like to try? If so, consider helping Plains & Peaks Mensa with Admissions Testing publicity! We’re looking to increase our testing numbers and really need a hand with the publicity – ideas, contacts, someone to take this particular bull by the horns and wres-tle around with it! And, bonus – this would look good on your resume or annual job appraisal! If you’d be interested in volunteering to be our Publicity person, contact Sandy at [email protected]! JOIN PLAINS & PEAKS MENSA ON FACEBOOK! See photos of recent activities and meetings and get to know some of your fellow Mensans via this popular social site! It’s a “closed” group so you have to ask to join. Search for “Plains & Peaks Mensa.” E-MAIL AND ELECTRONIC NEWSLETTER: If you’re receiving this via “snail mail,” consider changing your preferences to electronic news-letter and correspondence. It’s easy! Go to the American Mensa web-site or contact American Mensa to change your preferences! GET PUBLISHED! If you’d like to contribute to PlainsPeaking, submit your article, poem, photo, puzzle, or whatever to Betsy at [email protected] .

Plains & Peaks Patter WINES OF COLORADO SERVES SURPRISINGLY GOOD BURGERS! Ten BurgerQuesters journeyed up Ute Pass in October to visit the Wines of Colorado. The store offers free Colorado wine tastings (and of course, sells those wines), but they also serve a variety of food. Many of the regulars were there, but we were glad to see some “irregulars” too. Al, Chris, Ellen, George, Janet, Mike, Robin, Sandy, Sean, and Scott tried wine samples and judged burgers. Ratings (5 is perfect): Burgers 4.5 Service 4.0 Cleanliness 4.0 Side Dishes 3.0 Value for $ 4.0 Ambiance 3.5 (Casual = 1 Classy = 5) Comments: “Burger was good, didn’t much care for the potatoes.” “Burger cooked perfectly to taste.” “Hamburger was perfectly cooked. Desserts are HUGE!! So order to share!! Chocolate cake was Wonderful!” “The burger was excellent. It was cooked exactly medium, yet very moist, and tasted like a burger should.” My most sincere thanks go to Sandy for filling in for me in August and September. Chris and I planned some great trips – Pagosa Springs, Durango, and the Douro River in Portugal – and they just wouldn’t fit in between the BurgerQuest events. The November venue will be C.B. Potts Restaurant and Brewpub (Sandy’s suggestion), near the Bass Pro Shops at the north end of town, 261 Kaycee Case Place, Colorado Springs, 80921 (719 481-9034). For directions, check out the website at http://tinyurl.com/jmkau9d . Read about the Bacon Me Crazy Burger and you’ll know why Sandy recommended the place. And for Sean – Weasel German Festbier and Gordo Pumpkin Ale! While you’re at the website, sign up for their MVP club, and get a BOGO offer for a burger or chicken sandwich and a birthday dessert gift (but do NOT sign up for the MVP club until a week before the event. The coupon is only good for two weeks from sign-up). If you plan to attend, call George at (719) 418-6073 and leave a mes-sage. Know a burger joint we haven’t tried? Let George know. Re-member, whenever you attend, be sure to bring the tots; Burg-erQuest is a kid-friendly event.

MERF Scholarship Time THE 2016 - 2017 MERF COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY CONTEST “The Mensa Education & Research Foundation college scholarship program is unique in that its awards are based totally on essays written by the applicants. There is no requirement for applicants to be Mensa members nor is consideration given to grades, academic program, or financial need.” (From the MERF Web page at http://www.mensafoundation.org/what-we-do/scholarships/) What could be easier than writing an essay describing your goals and filling out a very simple application? And the applicant requirements are straightforward too: The applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of the US who resides in a participating local group's area; the applicant must be enrolled in a degree program in an accredited institution of higher learning during the academic year following the application date; and lastly, the applicant must submit an application and essay of not more than 550 words explaining their academic and/or vocational goals. Please note: The deadline for entries is January 15, 2017. So, if you’re in a degree program or about to enter one, check out the MERF Essay Contest. There will be at least one prize of approximately $300 given out for our local area, along with the potential of winning up to $1000 at the national level. If you have a friend or relative who would qualify, direct them to the MERF web-site http://www.mensafoundation.org/what-we-do/scholarships/ for the com-plete rules and application, or have them contact Sandy Halby, 719-528‑5483, or e-mail [email protected].

What a night we’ll have!

Saturday, November 19th, 11:30 am: Manitou Springs Heritage Cen-ter. Since we’ll be in Manitou Springs in for our Holiday Gala, let’s learn a bit about the town! The Manitou Springs Heritage Center, 517 Manitou Avenue, opened in 1997 with the goal of preserving and interpreting the history of Manitou Springs. Current exhibits include The Peanut Pusher (you gotta go just to hear this story), the Cog Railway (125 years old this year) and Manitou Springs water bottles – which were vital to the healthful mineral spring water advertising of the small mountain vil-lage! Admission is free (but donations are welcome). Tuesday, November 22nd: 6:00pm: Trivial Pursuits. We’re playing Showdown, a 6-stage trivia contest featuring a wide variety of topics, at Buffalo Wild Wings, 2905 Geyser Drive (at I-25 and Lake, next to Outback Steaks and Tinseltown) – they claim to have 45 players and Wi-Fi so everybody should be able to play! We’re drinking some adult beverages (if you want to) and noshing on wings and other Buffalo Wild Wings specialty foods like burgers and sand-wiches! The actual game starts at 6:30pm, but if you want a game player you probably should get there earlier! Call or e-mail Al (719-465-3747, [email protected]) to let him know you’ll be there! Sunday, November 27th, 2pm: Scrabble®! Meet at Sandy’s house, 6066 Del Rey Drive (near Flintridge and Dublin, call 528-5483 or email

[email protected] for directions) for an afternoon of just-for-fun Scrabble®. Sodas, wine and snacks pro-vided. Adults only, please! Allergy alert – cats and dogs!

DECEMBER EVENTS Advance Notice: Friday, December 2nd, 5pm: Give In To Beer Pres-sure! Colorado Springs has many fine breweries, but few tap rooms. A tap room allows us to sample wonderful beers from outside our area - the best of Colorado and the rest of the country. Our town just picked up a new tap room, so let's meet at the Brass Tap, 13271 Bass Pro Drive, #110. As always, if you have an idea or new pub for Give In To Beer Pressure, let Sean know! Cell phone: (719) 651-6706 or Email: [email protected] Advance Notice: Saturday, December 17th, starting at 5pm: Holiday Gala! We’ll be getting together on Saturday, the 17th of December, to celebrate the holiday season, our friendships and our unique Mensa camaraderie. Our annual gala, featuring dinner, door prizes, White Elephant Gift Exchange, and a generally all-around GREAT time will be at the historic PJ’s Stagecoach Inn in Manitou Springs. We’ll be meeting for cocktails (pay-as-you-go) at 5:00 pm, with dinner at 6:30 pm. See Page 5 in this newsletter for dinner choices and details!

Friday, November 4th, 5pm: Give In To Beer Pressure! This month, GITBP marks six continuous years of monthly imbibing. To celebrate,

let's go back to where we started. Our first GITBP was at Bristol Brewing Company. At the time, they were already one of Colorado Springs' most successful and well-known breweries. They still are! Bristol Brew-ing is in the Ivywild School building at 1604 S Cascade Ave. As always, if you have an idea for Give In To Beer Pressure, let Sean know! Cell phone: (719) 651-6706

or Email: [email protected] Tuesday, November 8th, 5:30 pm: Share the Election Experience – Celebrating Our Democracy! Wayne and Jennie-Jo White will be hosting a “Share the Election Experience – Celebrating Our Democra-cy!” evening and have invited all Mensa members to watch the elec-tion returns at their home. There are plenty of issues, controversy, and anticipation surrounding this election, on both the national and local level – so this should be an exciting evening! The Whites live at 9908 Paonia Park Place, Colorado Springs, CO 80924 -1214 (near Powers and Union). Please bring snacks to share. Whites will have beer and wine, but if you have spe-cific preferences for a libation, please bring it along. RSVP if conven-ient to [email protected] or call 719-495-0433. Note from Sandy: I had originally scheduled our ExComm Meeting on this date, but given the opportunity to join the Whites, we’ll just conduct our ExComm at the Whites house! Our business should take about 2 minutes – or less!! See you there! Friday, November 11th, 6pm: RSVP for BurgerQuest 2016-11. Reply “yes” as soon as you can, but no later than 6pm today, November 11th, for tomorrow’s BurgerQuest. Call George at 719-418-6073 (and leave a message) or send him an e-mail at [email protected]. Forgot to reply? Come anyway, we’ll fit you in. And plan to bring the young’uns, BurgerQuest is a kid-friendly event. Saturday, November 12th, 9:30am: Red Rocks Canyon Hike! Let’s go

back to where we started! Red Rocks Canyon! And, let’s also hope the weather holds! Join us for a morning hike in Red Rock Canyon Open Space, which is right off Highway 24 (west of I-25)! We’re planning on doing the Lower Hog-back/Red Rock Rim/Red Rock Canyon loop–

which is categorized as “easy” and is about 2.5 miles long. The parking area is off Highway 24 and Ridge Road (you can see the parking area from Highway 24) and we’ll meet up at Sandy’s car – she has a red Ford Explorer—with a gold Mensa logo on the back. We’re hitting the trail promptly at 9:30am, so you plan to arrive a few minutes early to locate Sandy and get your hat/water/etc. ready! Be sure to wear your hiking shoes and bring sun block and water, too! Sunday, November 13th, 1pm: BurgerQuest 2016-11. Our November venue is C. B. Potts, at 261 Kaycee Case Place, CoS, 80921 (719 481-9034), which is off I-25 and North Gate (near Bass Pro Shop). RSVP by November 12th so we can let them know how many to expect, but even if you don’t RSVP, come anyway, we’ll make room. Be sure to bring the Cookie Crumblers, BurgerQuest is a kid-friendly event.
