    Forgiveness

After Nelson Mandelas death, there were pages written in thepress about his legacy of reconciliation and forgiveness whichundoubtedly saved South Africa from conflict and retribution which

would have cost thousands of lives. How, after 27 years ofincarceration in a jail on Robben Island, could Mandela possiblyhave forgiven his captors and tormenters? The answer was to befound in a short three line letter published in The Daily Telegraph. This simply stated that Mandela was a Methodist and a Christian. We might ask an even greater question: how could Jesus haveforgiven those who tortured and crucified him? Throughout his

ministry on earth Jesus taught about forgiveness forgive us oursins as we forgive those who sin against us is prayed on a dailybasis by Christians throughout the world. Because Jesus forgaveus and took our sins upon himself on the cross, we have receivedforgiveness by God through Jesus. Because of Nelson Mandelasfaith, he was able to forgive those who sinned against him.

Politicians and the media have failed to shout the Mandelamessage from the rooftops. The message was that he was able to

forgive because he was a Christian and the Holy Spirit had instilledin him the spirit of forgiveness. Are we ashamed to shout out thatthe reconciliation in South Africa, introduced by Mandela, was aChristian message? We have witnessed one of the greatest actsof forgiveness by a mortal human being and yet we do not claim itas our own. Muslims usually interpret confessions of guilt by othersas a sign of weakness. Likewise, humility and forgiveness are notseen by them as virtues but as weaknesses. A N Wilson, writing inThe Daily Telegraph on Boxing Day said The ANC, for longyesa terrorist organisation, changed its mind, and behaved, notlike jihadists, but like Christians..because Mandela in his prisonyears decided to risk all on what was a fundamentally Christianidea.

Should we not learn in 2014 to follow Mandelas example, and aswe accept the forgiveness which Jesus offers to all who believe in

him, to forgive our neighbours for any injustice towards ourselves?

    St. Leonards Extensionupdate

After a cessation of work over the Christmas/New Year holidayspile drilling started in earnest on 6

    thJanuary. Twenty one 12

inch piles have now been installed to a depth between 8 and11.5 metres. Drilling was through good ground, mostly clay, with darker London Clay at lower levels. No ground water wasencountered despite being lower than the adjacent moat. Afterdrainage has been installed preparation for the concrete flooringwill begin.

Picture shows the top of the piles which will support the weightof the extension.

Review of Loddon Players Habeus Corpus.

It seems a while since I wrote this piece last yearbut re-reading it brought back a smile to my face atthe memories of the play.

Habeus Corpus gave us a slice of a 70s southcoast summer on a winters night. 4 beach huts, 3bentwood chairs and a cast of thousands (or at least it felt like that at

times). The story isbeautifully complicatedallowing for an evening oflust, lechery andlicentiousness but all in the

best possible taste. A breastphobic bra inspector had tobe seen to be believed.

With a cast of this size andskill it would be unfair to pickout any one individualalthough Pete Cook did

introduce a worrying note of realism to his inaugural performance, and

the running commentary from Frances Lewis playing Mrs Swabb wasbeautifully judged. This, all held together by theworthy? doctor, Ian May-Miller. around whom mostof the action took place. Once again a thoroughlyenjoyable eveningfrom the wholeteam

Look out for the next performance fromthe Loddon Players coming up in May,

    (May 1st, 2nd & 3rdat the Village Hall):

    TEXT FOR THE MONTH

    Matthew 9 : 36-38 The NIV Bible

When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion onthem, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheepwithout a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples,Theharvest

is plentiful but the workers are few.

    Ask the Lord of the

harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.

    Prayer for the Month.

As we come to the end of the time called Epiphany we remember thewise men who set out in search of a King. They persevered in theirquest, travelling in faith, even though they did not know where they wereto go and had no idea of what they would find when they reached their

destination. They were not discouraged even though they could not getdefinite answers to their questions and were an example to us as wesearch for a replacement for Bob. Living God we pray for all who aresearching today, all those who seek a sense of purpose in their lives, allthose who are searching for spiritual fulfilment. Help us to continuelooking even when the journey is demanding and there seems to be noclear answer, help us to keep trusting in you. May the experience of thewise men inspire us to seek an answer to our needs and to trust in youwhatever happens to us. Help us to recommit ourselves to the journeyof faith to follow where you lead and to offer ourselves in joyful service.Receive us in all our weaknesses so that we may live and work for yourkingdom.

In Jesus name we pray. Amen

    Prayer Points for February

Pray for those who feel isolated and lonely as they struggle to cope withbad weather and all the difficulties which have happened this winter.

Continue to pray for the people of the Philippines who are so easilyforgotten and are still struggling with the aftermath of the devastationcaused by the Typhoon of last November

Pray for the people of Syria and for world leaders who struggle to find away to bring an end to the bitter conflict and to bring peace to thatcountry

Pray for the future of a world so full of anxieties and worries, uncertain of

the future and unsure of the way forward. Give our leaders the courageto create policies in which all feel they can trust

Pray for Bob and Rody as they settle in their new home and new parish

A Neighbourhood Plan for the Parish of Sherfield-on-Loddon

An Invitation to help planSherfields future

We invite you to two Open Sessions:to meet members of the Committee, viewdisplays and ask questions about the process.

Saturday 8 February: The Village Hall 10am-12 noon, which isalso The Village Coffee Morning.

Saturday 15 February: Sherfield Park Community Centre2pm-4pm

We all know that the Basingstoke and Deane Local Plan mayrecommend more housing developments to the East ofBasingstoke. This will bring the boundary of the town nearer to ourParish and impact on our daily lives e.g. traffic levels on the A33will be increased, as might the pressures on our open spaces.

For this reason the Parish Council has set up a NeighbourhoodPlan working group to draw up proposals which will enable the

local community to work together on a vision for the futurecharacter of the Parish and needs you, the residents, to state yourviews.

    Olympic Impressions at Probus Club

John Kynoch, himself a member of the Probus Club of Basingstoke, gave an outline of the history of the Olympic Games and how hebecame a member of the British team.

Living on a remote sheep farm in New Zealand there was a weeklyvisit from a neighbouring farmer with his son and the two young boyswere taught to shoot by Johns Scottish father who had shot at Bisley..

Attending school John joined the shooting section and realised that hehad a real skill and beat older boys. Eventually attending Bisley herose to the top andrepresented GreatBritain in several

    internationals.

At the next OlympicGames in 1972, asporting rifle competitionwas being introduced. Ata distance of 50 metresa running boar silhouettewould cross a gap of 10metres in 5 seconds, then 2.5 seconds. From a standing position the shooter would have 5shots in each section.

He built a mini gallery in his garage and for the next two years hereckons he put in 2000 hours of training. He likened this to how agolfer practices his swing without hitting the ball and that only 5% ofhis training involved firing a shot. At the Olympic trials he produced hisbest ever score and was selected for the GB team. The feeling wasthat he might get into the top ten but things turned out differently.

He actually won the bronze medal with a score that a year earlier hadbeen a world record. This was the first medal for rifle shooting won bya Briton since 1924 and was rightly celebrated. However this was thegames that became known as Black September as members of theIsraeli team were assassinated by Arab terrorists and even after allthese years John still finds himself emotionally affected.

Happy new year to you all!

I hope that your festive season was not too badlyaffected by the weather. It was Bramleys turn to losepower for 3 days over Christmas including yours truly! If

you were affected I remind you that compensation shouldbe offered by SSE. They have a webbased consultationrunning until March and I would encourage residents to contribute(www.ssepd.co.uk/Goodwill). The issue with localised flooding inSherfields roads is again on the agenda to encourage ThamesWater to address the issue.

We continue to be updated with flood alerts for the river Loddon andits tributaries and many of our back roads have localised flooding. If

the frosts come and more potholes appear I would ask that you letthe County Council know where they occur.

Updates on development and the local plan: - The Planning andInfrastructure Team is meeting regularly to discuss the feedback tothe Draft Local Plan consultation. It is clear that resulting from theCounty Councils plans to sell its land as it wishes and not asexpected, then we are now lacking sites to provide the requiredhousing. New sites are being added by the Officers and will be

discussed at these meetings. A site in the Chineham business park just below the Razors Farm site is proposed plus another farmover in Old Basing! You can well imagine the impact to our area thatthey will potentially have.

The Razors Farm planning application was unanimously rejected bythe Planning Committee before Christmas, on very strong planninggrounds. Of course this is already going to be determined by EricPickles given Croudaces earlier decision to appeal but at least our

Officers will now be defending it during the hearing. The Boroughhas also recently lost its appeal against the Kennel Farm applicationso houses will now be built near Sainsburys along with housing atMarnel Park, Popley (Kiln Farm) which was also lost at appeal.

The reason is that the Borough cannot demonstrate a 5 year supplyof housing which is against the Governments planning rules. Thisleaves us wide open to developers who, with the upper hand andGovernment support, can pretty well build wherever they like. Our

UK planning system is broken and where is the Localism?

If you are unhappy with this situation (and BDBC is not the onlyauthority affected) then we should be lobbying our MPs to allow our

Council to best determine its own future, paying due regard to ourcomments and concerns.

The obvious, logical solution for Basingstoke is to allocate more landat Manydown, and quickly but it seems that our administration is stilldigging its heels in.....

James Welch VCAs some of you may be aware Plaquesare to be presented to all Parisheswhere someone who was awarded theVictoria Cross in World War 1 was bornto commemorate the event on the 100thanniversary of the event for which theyare honoured.Stratfield Saye is proud to be one of theParishes which will receive a plaquededicated to James Welch who wasborn in Stratfield Saye on 7th July 1889.The plaque will be presented at acommemorative event on the

anniversary of the award in April 2017.

The extract detailing his action below isfound at the Rifles Berkshire andWiltshire Museum in Salisbury who alsohold the original medal.

James Welch was born at Stratfield Saye, Hampshire. He was 27years old and a Lance-Corporal in the 1st Battalion, The RoyalBerkshire Regiment (Princess Charlotte of Wales's), British Army

during the First World War when he performed the actions for which hewas awarded the VC. on 29 April 1917 near Oppy, France, Lance-Corporal Welch entered an enemy trench and killed one man and aftera severe hand-to-hand struggle. Then, armed only with an emptyrevolver, he chased four of the enemy across the open andcaptured them single-handed. He handled his machine-gun with theupmost fearlessness, and more thanonce went into the open exposed to

heavy fire, to search for and collectammunition and spare parts in orderto keep his guns in action, which hesucceeded in doing for over five hoursuntil wounded by a shell. He laterachieved the rank of sergeant. Hedied aged 88 at Bournemouth wasburied with his wife, Daisy.I think everyone reading will understand what an extremely brave manJames Welch was and be grateful to him and many others for theirsacrifices during this and the 2nd World War to ensure our freedom.Penny Mayo

    NWR Report February 2014

At our last proper meeting of 2013, we had atalk on the history of underwear. It has beengenerally believed that the bra is about 100

years old, but in 2008 the remains of a linen bra was found in anAustrian castle which dated back about 600 years. Bra-likegarments were worn by female athletes during the Minoan period inancient Crete and there is a mosaic depicting women in ancientRome also wearing something akin to a strapless bra. But themodern bra has only been worn for the last 100 years or so withlarge scale production commencing in the 1930s and theWonderbra becoming available in the 60s. Pants are also arelatively modern item of clothing as generally they were not wornuntil the 19thcentury. The reason we say a pair of pants is thatthey were just that two tubes, one on each leg and joined at thewaist. Somewhat chilly we thought! The 1930s also saw theintroduction of nylon stockings and Y-front pants. We also learntabout the history of corsets, which were seen as a symbol of status, but there is no evidence that they were worn to produce 18 inchwaists. It was a very interesting and entertaining evening.

We celebrated Christmas with a lovely meal at a members house, each bringing a dish or bottle. After some Christmas readings wedid a quiz identifying television personalities and programmes fromthe 1980s.

Into 2014 we held our annual planning meeting. The theme countryfor this year is Belgium, so we will have an evening of eating Belgianfood, learning a bit about the country and doing a quiz. The main

theme for the year is War and Peace to commemorate the 100th

anniversary of the beginning of the First World War and therefore wewill discuss what women did in the two world wars and also thepositive outcomes of war generally. We will be reading My Dear IWanted To Tell You by Louisa Young, a book describing the WW1battlefields and the effect on the women left behind. We will thendiscuss it later in the year. Joint evenings with partners will includea ramble and a barge trip.

Our main January meeting was a Beetle Drive.
