COMMODORE’S NOTES

Hi everyone! I would firstly like to thank everyone who attended our Club Presentation Night on Friday the 18th May. In what has been arguably our worst season ever sailing wise, it was fantastic to see over 130 people come down to not only support our Club, but also support and congratulate our trophy and championship winners for season 2017-18. The efforts of our galley staff to cater for that many people should not be underestimated, considering that the Club and chef unfortunately parted ways earlier in the week. I personally thank and wish Garry Webster all the best in his new endeavours. This did however, leave a hole in our kitchen for one of the bigger nights for our Club members, so it was great to have Cherie Dally take the task on with our whole galley staff admirably - thanks team! As most of you well know, this evening also came on the back of the resignation of our Food, Beverage and Events Manager, Andrew Hirschausen. This loss put a great deal of extra work and responsibility onto some of our members and staff over the following weeks. I would like to thank Tony Gold, Martin Pike and Kylie Thomas for ensuring the

staffing and logistics of the club commercial business were adequately maintained while we searched for a replacement. That process also took some considerable effort to develop and work through, including an updated job advertisement and job description; the scrutineering of multiple applicant resume`s; the pre-calling and screening of candidates; and finally the 2 stage interview process itself. This task takes a great deal of time and expertise so I would like to acknowledge Tony Turton, Phil Scapens, Martin Pike, Michelle Higgins and Tony Gold for assisting the Club and me in recruiting our newest staff member. It is with great pleasure that I introduce Stephen Brind to our Club and welcome him into the fold! Please come down and meet him yourself over a meal and/or glass of wine. While these changes to staff may seem drastic, the Management Committee is confident that these are both fantastic opportunities to improve and become better in areas that definitely needed revamping. It will now be up to Stephen, supported by us, to decide how to best complement our kitchen staffing and deliver those improvements. With the vast majority of our year now done before our new season

begins, I really do implore you, our membership, to continue to support your Club. This can be done simply by bringing a friend down for a sunset drink (get in early!) or meal, considering the Club for a party/ milestone venue for yourself or business, or even just attending our Club AGM on the 29th June. This will be important. I also hope that you all consider attending our Commodore’s Ball on the 23rd of June. There has been some concern that the whole event will be Indian catering given the Bollywood theme, but I would like to make it clear that only some of the appetisers will have an Indian theme, along with one of the choices of main. Those with delicate palettes can relax! The House Committee has been working very hard to make this event a highlight and successful, so please book and pay as soon as possible to make it easier on them. Cheers Rob

VICE COMMODORE’S REPORT

It’s been a full on season one way or the other on and off the water the club has been buzzing and I am sure we will be buzzing even more next season. A summary of our season- from Don Woolman, our scorer: “We had a register of 95 senior’s and 56 junior’s without the Green fleet, making a total of 151, for the season on the data base. We had 466 senior nominations for the 14 races sailed and 164 junior nominations (Open Fleet) for the 13 races they sailed. There are 9 NS14’s, 26 Sabres, 6 505’s, 14 Sharpie’s, TYF 4 with two keel boats, Payne Mortlock Canoe’s 1, 11 Dinghy Fleet, 1 Mirror, 10 420’s plus the Club boats. I realise that this does not add up to the 95 boats on the register but is taken from race 1 for the season. There are also a further 5 International Cadets on the data base making up the number of juniors (56) in the

Page 7: LOG BOOK - BSYC

MAY 2018 Page 5

Page 8: LOG BOOK - BSYC

MAY 2018 Page 6

data base. All are Optimist Open and the figure does not include any Green fleet Optis, the numbers of Green Optis is ever growing, they will be added to the register next year so everyone can be included. One International Cadet sailed reasonably regularly There were 7 Non Consistency (NC) races scheduled to be sailed throughout the season; and we had 9 Saturdays of no sailing because of no wind or too much wind” The 505’s have achieved a Club Championship – the first for quite a few years – well done to them! – they have managed to organise themselves to sail at the club on Club Championship days which is a great result considering how busy families and work commitments are. Next season is looking great for 420’s with quite a few of the Open Opti kids moving into them – they will be out on the senior course and

will probably be joined by the vastly improved club 420 fleet who are keen to be out in all conditions. At the moment they are sailing without spinnakers and doing a lap less – as they learn more they will be able to do the full course. Well done to Brett for getting them this far! There are changes in the Sabre fleet and a stack of NS14’s for sale – these will be up on our new for sale page on the website – they are a great boat to sail and a great way to become part of the BSYC fleet. Thanks to Don for organising the scoring. Bridge has now been on a mostly 3 week rotation of Don, Annabel and Christine, we are always happy to have spotters in the bridge. Special thanks to Noelene who looks after the Bridge now that Macca has resigned as bridge coordinator, even though she didn’t

really want to. Daryl Heath has filled in as well which has been fantastic. Thanks to Ian and Suzanne and everyone on the rescue boats for getting us racing as much as possible. Thanks to Ian, the rescue boat crews and all volunteers for running a successful Nationals. We have Contenders coming up at the end of this season, this will be great to see (especially if there is some wind) Race officer course? Anyone interested? - Brett and I will schedule one into the program before the start of the season. Crews Race/stern chaser– we seem to miss out on this quite often -do we want it a different time of the year? (Feedback on this appreciated). With all this sailing going on, even during the week and on Sundays with Brett’s various programs running and the sailing school growing, the impact has been felt especially on the RIBS a major focus during the winter is getting them back running properly and the leaks fixed. Everyone needs to look after and respect them the following season, they are an essential part of our club and when one is out because of damage it does cause a problem. On the first weekend in September we will also have a sailing

gear/boat/sails etc garage sale in the lower deck – so make sure you keep anything which could be exchanged or sold to update your own wardrobe and also that of your boat. Rumour is that we all need to watch out for Jimmy Lelliott who will be out to snap up any bargain and will be a tough negotiator. With winter upon us we can give our hard-working Sailing Professional a rest and give him time to heal his ankle which is suffering from an Osteochondral fracture and a torn tendon. He has progressed from crutches to a moon boot, fingers crossed for a full recovery. Recent raffles have included some fantastic knives which were very generously donated by James Maddox (Shorty’s cousin) those who have won one have been very impressed – they are razor sharp! The recommended retail price for the knives is as follows. 7'' Glossy Ceramic Chef's Knife - $44.99

5'' Glossy Ceramic Santoku Knife - $30.99

4'' Glossy Ceramic Paring Knife - $16.99

6'' Glossy Ceramic Chef's Knife - $39.99

AUSTRALIAN SPORTS FOUNDATION

June 30th is the deadline for gifting through the ASF, to the Club and being able to claim the tax deduction in your 2018 return. Further to David Belford’s excellent update on the ASF in the last BSYC Logbook I remind Members that they can donate to either of two ASF approved projects, ‘The BSYC Club Infrastructure Project’ or ‘The BSYC Junior and Youth Development Program’. Since reinitiating our ASP partnership 2 years ago nearly $15,000 has been given by Members and Club Supporters. Several projects would not have been possible without it. Donations to the Club can be made at any time either on line through the ASF website (asf.org.au; follow the prompts under ‘Donate to sport’ menu and search for BSYC) or offline by filling out a Donation Form available from the Club office. The online option is preferred as it keeps the office actions and costs to a minimum and ensures a quick emailed delivery of the tax deductible receipt. Bruce Noble, Retiring Commodore.

SABRE DINGHY NEWS

There has been some movement in regard to changes in the Brighton Sabre fleet with one new boat arriving and another being sold. John Cobb has sold his trusty boat Grey Nomad to a Western Australian skipper Brian Jones who is the current National President. John reluctantly sold his boat as he would not have been able to sail next season due to ongoing issues with his shoulder. On the flip side Dave Gordon from the NS14 fleet has purchased a very good boat, 1856 Smoke and Mirrors, from Adelaide Sailing Club’s Bryan Inns. Dave is a long time sailor at B&SYC and is a very experienced and successful skipper and his presence in the Sabre fleet will be a definite bonus for the 2018-19 sailing season. The SSASA Annual General Meeting was held at Somerton recently and Wallaroo’s Ryan Kelly was re-elected as El Presidente and B&SYC is again well represented on the committee with the following members elected: Vice President - Peter Wilcox Secretary - Jonathan Owen Treasurer - Rob Gale Committee - John Rumpff Committee - Graeme McLeay Bill Tucker continues as an Assistant Measurer, while Peter W. is also the

Page 12: LOG BOOK - BSYC

MAY 2018 Page 10

YSA rep and Sean Hackett is the Measurer. For those who feel the need to sail on through the coming winter months the GAC Sailing at Goolwa is running winter sailing in May, June, July and August. The first round of racing kicked off on Sunday 6 May and five Brighton Sabres including Bill Tucker, Peter Leader, John Rumpff, Rob Gale and John Gratton were there to enjoy an excellent afternoon’s sail in the 15 boat Sabre fleet. Check the GAC Sailing website for dates and details. Bye for now, HOODOO

YOUTH NEWS

It's now been over a month since the final day of the official season but juniors have still been very active and still getting on the water. They don't seem to mind the cooler water and they have so much energy! A week after our closing day the State Teams Racing Championships were held at Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club. All of the teams that train at Brighton were

represented as well as many of our junior members. A big congratulations to the Westminster Team who took out 1st and 2nd with their first two teams. They will now be competing in the Nationals to be held at Blairgowrie Yacht Club on Port Phillip Bay. Concordia who finished 5th may get a wild card entry to sail nationals as well. Walford Girls stole the show for a couple of hours on the last day as they competed against each other in all girls final. Walford Pink defeated Walford Orange but it definitely wasn't a walkover. Well done to all our junior members who sailed at Goolwa. During May a clinic has been held for junior sailors on each Sunday. So far the weather has been ideal and 22 sailors have been out there sailing Optis and 420s. The focus

Page 13: LOG BOOK - BSYC

MAY 2018 Page 11

has been getting around a course and better starting technique. This has been a great lead up for those juniors aiming to sail in the Frostbite Regatta at Goolwa on the June LWE. Our final clinic will be held this Sunday 27th from 10am til 1pm finishing up with a $2 coin BBQ. We will also be looking at boats for sale on display on the back lawn. If you have an Optimist or 420 for sale please let me know. The Live In is back!! 19 kids slept over at the yacht club on Saturday 12th May giving some of the Mums a chance to sleep in on Mother’s Day. Most of those attending were Green Fleet or straight out of Tackers so it was great to get out on

the water in the Club 420s late on the Saturday. Thank you to Angus, Taryn and Harry who came down and volunteered to steer the boats. There were lots of games and videos plus an awesome hamburger dinner served upstairs. Our Junior Commodore Ruby

Pike spoke to the group about her career so far and inspired our newer juniors to keep sailing. A huge thank you to all the parents who helped out especially Ros Sayers, Bob McGivern and Dave Higgins. On top of this two very successful coaching clinics put on by Australian Sailing were hosted by BSYC. Firstly in late April 28 juniors sailed in the 420 clinic with Olympic gold

Page 14: LOG BOOK - BSYC

MAY 2018 Page 12

medalist coach Tessa Parkinson OAM. Great turnout. Two weeks later the national windsurfing coach Max Wojcik worked with a dozen 420 and Laser youth giving them a taste for a different discipline and it was cool to see a heap of boards out there going fast. Both these fleets are on the rise at BSYC which is great and gives ours juniors more options when moving out of Optimists. The last event for the season (even though it will be winter) is the ever popular Frostbite Regatta at Goolwa on the LWE. Sarah Short and I will be coaching Green Fleet along with a few others. See the full page

poster in this edition for more info and the links to webpage and booking. Be sure to give me a call if you wish to enquire about this event or need transport to get you boat down to Goolwa for the weekend. I hope you can make it. That's it for now. I am sure the winter months will pass quickly and September will be upon us before we know it. Look out for the Spring Clinic and warm up sailing days for

juniors in September. I will keep you posted during the off season. Cheers Brett
