W E E K 9 tutorial Site visit to Cancer Centre (continued): Along with a variety of tradesmen on site, a large variety of materials where being used within the construction. The foundations themselves had been constructed from concrete piles which had horizontal reinforce- ments added later to ensure structural integrity. Indeed, the majority of the structure had been con- structed from concrete, concrete columns and slabs visible across all floors. Indeed, the concrete pump was still on site when we visited. Concrete block work was being used fro internal partitions. Beyond concrete large amounts of steel had been used, both as a window frame, but also in the radia- tion chambers, where extra steel was used as a means of minimising radiation seepage. Steel was not the only metal used within the design, copper piping visible on the lower levels, while further steel was visible, used for the overhead cabling trays. Plasterboard was being placed on the steel stud frame, with insulation going in, thus ensuring the building had some thermal massing. Likewise, glazing was being placed on the exterior walls, representing another material in the wide array of materials on the site.
